The Learning Experience: How do you think it happens and how it really happens?

Most people associate learning only with the achievement of academic goals, but nevertheless human beings are learning from the same moment that our senses begin to work within the womb. For this reason, at 25 weeks of gestation (when our hearing becomes acute) we begin to discover what is the voice of mom and we respond with movement to this stimulus and this even it is "Learning", if it were not so the newborns will not be calmed by the mother's voice once it is snuggled up in her arms.

The truth is that we limit the time of learning to actions such as: learning to read, recognize numbers, learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide, memorize a lesson and answer the questions of an exam, obviating that before this happens have given at least 8 different types of learning that today we intend to illustrate in this post.

Let's not say more, let's start to categorize and exemplify the different types of learning according to the different phases of our existence:

Learning during life itself


Certainly, when babies begin to be interested in "crawling" or "taking their first steps" is because the body has acquired motor skills that allow you to perform new maneuvers that well please and frighten their parents and this is simply an "implicit learning".

We can define it then as that learning where the person doing it is not aware that he is learning to do something, but simply happens

We could also exemplify this type of learning to the discovery of fire by men of the caves, where the friction of several objects resulted in a new element

"The fire", remember that historians thinks this accident would the beginning of a new way of life for these primitive men.

As a curious fact I can tell you that there are currently children's programs designed especially for children to learn the meaning of certain things before these infants know how to speak and write, thanks to the combination of images, colors and sequences of space and time. For this reason we infer that today's babies are born learned, without knowing that it is the sum of early stimulation to knowledge, which in our times could only be achieved with programs such as "Sesame Street" :-)

However, four new ways of understanding the environment, from different points of view, are added to the learning described above:

One through the association of two or several elements, as demonstrated by the pioneer of this type of learning "Iván Pavlov",

which conditioned the dog through the sound of a bell that told the dog that it was time to eat that is to say learned by association.

Another way of learning is that which is given in a "non-associative" way, that is, the one we obtain thanks to adaptation or habituation

to certain circumstances of daily life, such as the auditory adaptation of people who live in the big cities to the sounds of traffic, including the habituation of those who live near an airport or the ear of first-time parents who get used to the crying of their babies (it's a pity that the neighbors can not say the same thing).

And not to make the story so extensive, we learn when we observe and experience and these my dear friends do it even before stepping on the kindergarten and we continue practicing it after retiring and to enjoy our golden years.

People who have the ability to observe can learn from the example of others and experimentation provides a wealth of knowledge of our experiences.

And finally we came to the "School Learning"


If you are still reading the post :-) we can remember that we learn since we exist, some things are learned implicitly, as many experimenting, observing and habituated to certain circumstances ..... Ufffff how much we have learned and yet with this we are enrolled in school to "learn something in life" (as if they did not know that to learn you only need a stimulus).

As mentioned above, we learn to identify and respond to stimuli, we learn to crawl, walk and become more independent and together with this we become more deserving of the responsibility to learn in an "Explicit" way, that is, becoming aware that We are doing activities to learn something or master some "new art" that gets our attention.

We will then define "explicit learning" as that which is generated intentionally and consciously.

We started to focus our attention on texts, images, objects, explanations of the teacher (receptive learning) and even learn by repetition (rote learning), we activated our prefrontal lobes with the intention of fixing in our mind subjects with the intention of answering questions that they will become good grades if they become correct.

But! ... learning is not that difficult if we help each other


As good citizens we accept our responsibility, same that goes deepening as they advance our academic degrees, with the good news that we are not alone in the way, the recesses become more fun and our companions are part of that learning, without knowing it we know the cooperative and group learning, the one that gives better results if we hit with a partner who is an excellent student and another who calms the nerves with a good joke :-)

At last! we have discovered lifelong learning


Recapitulating so far, we have learned without knowing that we do it, knowing, even with the help of our classmates (although this learning has a time of expiration), but belatedly we understand that there are two extremely important learnings that we will ensure success in any of the fascetas of our life, I would say that the two are related or at least get along very well:

The first of them is ...... "Emotional learning" where you become aware of your emotions and the emotions of your peers and get an apprenticeship of this: for something they say that you have to learn to channel and understand emotions and the practice of this type of learning allows us to master the art of "Emotional Intelligence"

The second of the learnings (and one of my favorites) is the "Significant Learning", this is the conjugation of the aforementioned learning, since it considers: experience, association, observation, reflection, among others and with this The construction of knowledge is achieved individually and according to the accumulation of learning that the same person has accumulated.

If you understood what has been said so far, you can understand that not every study generates learning and that there is learning even without studying. That we are extraordinary beings, capable of learning before knowing the world and that we leave this world still trying to learn more about life itself.
