22 years ago I discovered the Internet
I saw 2 things the Internet would do:
- Connect People to People
- Connect People to Information
- I got involved.
Webmastering my first site
Actually making a living from the Internet for about 5 years
- I got involved.
Recently I ran across Steemit and saw I could relive the early days of the Internet.
- The rough and tumble days
The days of comaraderie- All the experimentation to create a name for oneself.
- All the people helping each other even though they were in competition somewhat.
- All the experimentation to create a name for oneself.
I'm here for the adventure!

Comparing Steemit to the Good Ol' Days
We, the early adopters of the Internet, had the same problems, frustrations and hopes
as we, the early adopters of Steemit, are experiencing.
Problems & frustrations
How to get noticed?
- How does a minnow in the ocean get noticed?
- How to differentiate yourself from the thousands of other minnows...
- One solution was to pool efforts

- We established link exchanges.
- You link to me and I'll link to you.
- This is similar to what we see on Steemit.

- some were free-for-all... all inclusive...
a group of hobbits, elves, dwarfs, humans and usually a wizard or 2- some were topic or location specific
fishermen, Christians, technology buffs, ...

- Some webmasters spent so much time collecting awards, ๐
it was sometimes hard to find their actual content from all the clutter.- I'm not saying you shouldn't join all the groups here on Steemit you find interesting and helpful,
but sometimes the bottom of your post listing them all is more content than your actual content... - I'm probably not talking to you,
but, if the shoe fits, wear it...

We had to learn a whole new way of writing.
- How to format pages, how to add pictures, etc.
- Back in the day, we used notepad to write our HTML and later CSS when it came out to do all this
- You kiddos have it easy, you have markdown
and can still use HTML if you want to do some fancy stuff.

- Some won't take the time to learn a bit of formatting and that's a shame
- Sometimes the only difference between good content and GREAT content

High Hopes
Just as the early adopters of the Internet had high hopes,
so do most people when they join Steemit.
- Some people get satisfaction by producing content that:
- makes someone smile
- teaches someone how to do something
- shares your common sense
- showcases your talent
- ๐ถ musicians, ๐ writers, ๐จ artists...
๐ฐ Some people had a goal of actually making money by providing their unique content.
- In the Good Ol' Days, you had to have something to sell or become an affiliate of someplace that sold stuff.
- 20 some years later,
along comes Steemit,
and you can forget all those headaches,
and actually get paid for simply creating content!

Conclusion
If you ever wondered what it was like when the Internet got started,
- take a good look around Steemit
- It's virtually the same
- only better...

Fair warning
A lot of the small mom & pop web sites went away when big money came to the platform.
- You either learned to swim with the sharks or you became obscure.
- Look around Steemit today and you will see a lot of negative observations about the platform.
- You ain't seen nothing yet, baby!

Be forewarned, big money has noticed this platform.
- Right now in board rooms across the world,
companies have teams of people formulating a plan to take this platform by storm.- I look for many to emerge as soon as SMTs are released.
- They will throw big money to get eyeballs on their content.

- Anyone besides me remember the sock puppet dog that tried to sell dog food,
whose company blew through millions of $'s only to realize hmm shipping is a business killer?

- Nope, it just means, it will change.
- and it means if you've been able to eek out a small nestegg
you could become quite wealthy as SBD becomes very valuable!

Why I'm on Steem
To relive the Good Ol' Days of the Internet,
- where I did things very similar things I'm doing now on Steemit
- and totally enjoying myself in the process.
Don't expect to find happiness when you reach your destination, instead enjoy meeting the people along the journey

I was one of the first on the internet (via Compuserve) and also became a full time affiliate marketer so I totally relate to your observations.
I am also enjoying the "wild west" feeling that Steemit has at the moment and agree that it is only a matter of time before big money comes rolling in. You only have to look at the latest Alexa ranking to see that Steemit is no longer under the radar:
It is an exciting time to be involved and I just hope things don't get overly commercial too soon.

That noise haunts me! I also had a ZX81 and used to record programmes from Tomorrow's World with a cassette deck so I have binary overload!

My first computer was a Timex Sinclair with

I still love Basic programming. Wish it was still available!
Later I got my first "laptop"...
and was in hog heaven! CP/M dBase III Basic woohoo!!!

I love your entry @wizarddave! The bullet points are so clean and easy to read :) I remember the good old internet days back maybe 18-20 years ago I used to love designing web pages back then.. there was this "girly dolls" phase/fanatic hobby that swept through 12year old girls in those days LOL

The big world of the internet. My first computer was a Tandy Color Computer 2. Then I moved up to the Commodore 64 and the 128. Giving away my age huh! Had a cassette tape to save info on and then those floppy disks. Boy, the world sure has changed!
Man, I used to drool over those computers!
They were so cool compared to my lil puter with 2k of memory...
Yeah, the old Atari games, loved Pitfall. Played it as much as I could. I finally wore it out. That was a sad day. I cut grass and did odd jobs to earn enough to buy my computers and stuff. My parents did not get it. Thought it was a waste of money. Learned some basic programming on the Tandy.

It, (steemit), really is a lot like the old days isn't it. I never could get into facebook or some of the other social sites that came along. I dropped out of social media, when ICQ and PowWow died, or morphed into what I call "Kirbyfied internet" keep it to simple instead of keep it simple stupid.

ICQ was cool, but Powwow rocked. Meeting people from all over the world. Realizing we are more alike than different. Good memories.
Kirby was a vacuum sold door to door, but wy wife and I refer to anything that has been dumbed down to the absolute lowest denominator as Kirbied or kirbyfied, Our own little version of "Kilroy" was here.
