Virtual Reality and Crypto: The ULTIMATE Demonstration of a Future Economy

in #steemit6 years ago

Read this post, it's worth it, I promise!

If you don't like exciting stuff or you like your future bland, simple and mainly in FIAT, simply skim through the post.

On the other hand, if you like the idea of an exciting, complete, complex and near-perfect Crypto future and vibrant crypto economies... consider reading this post through.

So, recently, I've been playing Virtual Reality Skyrim. To be specific, Skyrim VR for the PlayStation VR. Skyrim is an open world game that is as complete as they come, and I'm going to use it as an example on how future economies are going to be like.

Sounds farfetched?

It really isn't. I've written a bit about this topic already in an earlier post, but now I'm going to go deeper and tell you about the fusion of TWO MAJOR GAME-CHANGERS of society.

VIRTUAL REALITY + CRYPTOCURRENCIES!

Sounds great? Read below...

Virtual Reality is the Future: A Major New Economy is Born!

Source

If you aren't still aware of this, you have to wake up. Virtual Reality is a huge new thing, and it will create its own parallel economies as much as the Internet created some already.

VR is going to be used in any industry or niche, from healthcare, to automotive mechanics, to clubbing, to gaming and much more.

I've played Skyrim in 2D tons of times, I know every nook and cranny and yet I never felt I was PART OF THE WORLD.

Now I do it, everything feels real, even with dated graphics. People feel read, objects seem real, landscapes are beautiful and that made me think... think of the future!

A Crypto Economy: Here's An Example

Check this image below:

Imagine what it feels like to enter a tavern like these in Virtual Reality.

You get lost in it, I was looking at all the cuttlery, the bottles, the dishes, the people... just staring non-stop.

Imagine if it was an online thing and you could hang out on these lovely places with your friends.

Imagine if you could meet with someone on here rather than on a bland Skype call or something.

Plus, imagine the amount of people using these places, these taverns or leisure places and the amount of transactions for virtual goods, for a musician working there, for entertainers and more.

Imagine getting home after a long work day, slipping your headset or neuro sensor or whatever and enter a world of wonder to meet some cool people, enjoy a peaceful moment or hear the stand up comedian or "bard" currently working there.

All of these things would use the in-game currency... a crypto currency. That currency would have value, would have use, and would have importance.

This is how we're going to see virtual worlds in the future.

In STEEMIT, we earn Steem by performing activities... in this new virtual world, you would earn its Crypto doing activities too.

On the other hand, you would spend it for services of any kind, as suggested by the picture, plus when you spend it - it's the receiver who's earning.

A complex crypto economy in a virtual reality world.

Imagine that!

Another Example: Meaningful Choices

Check the image below:

In this same game - or virtual world since it is much more than a game by this point - people wouldn't only have leisure time.

People would also have their "jobs"... on STEEM, we have jobs:

  • Some are DTubers;
  • Some are Bloggers;
  • Some are Utopian Contributors...

...and so on.

Well, on this virtual world of the future, the guy in the picture would be an apothecary owner.

He would grow herbs, he would concuct potions to ensure your avatar is always healthy and he would perform tasks that are integrated with the rest of the economy.

In exchange, the virtual world's "Reward Pool" would reward him for his efforts. Plus, things could even go a degree further and make part of his rewards go for a "Real-Life" Non-charity that works in the health niche.

This concept of "reward pool" is hard to understand on the outside, but people on STEEM understand it already, so do you see how a thriving economy could evolve in a world like that?

Plus, with the VR added on, and all of the "experiences" people would have there, do you see how big it could be?

But, there's more...

Increasing Transactions: Making Dynamic Economies

We take pride on our transactional volume here with STEEM.

Do you know why STEEM has so many transactions? Because our inner economy is bigger than most, among other things.

Well, virtual worlds would also have thriving economies.

On the picture above, we have a farm. The resident would work the farm and get some goods, the goods would then be sold by the farmer to the baker - for example - the baker would then sell the goods to the tavern, and the farm would pay for the goods with his revenue.

This just to show you that games already do these things since the 1990s - but these things will, in the future, have value!

Things that the average Economist now calls bullshit will have value in the future, because we'll live in a tokenized world.

Different Professions: Working in Virtual Worlds

So, the Virtual Worlds in the future would give you a lot of different options, a lot of different experiences... but do you know what that does create?

Virtual Jobs!

People will be required to run these Virtual Worlds, and of course the Virtual Services... but do you think it will be a company controlled thing?

Some may be, but the vast majority will be - you got it - decentralized.

People will be the ones who will build stuff, who will open a mine, a tavern, a farm, a blacksmith, an apothecary, a nightclub, a whorehouse etc etc etc...

And sure, people will hire other people as always. The new ecomony will create virtual jobs... something most people consider to be a laughable concept, or did unless they are up to date with how VR, AR and MR are right now.

The Virtual Financial World: The Virtual Businessmen!

So, this brings us to the final topic:

Wherever economies are found, people who try to accumulate resources can always be spotted as well.

A new brand of self-made man will appear. Just like in STEEM the Whales appeared, these virtual worlds will have whales as well.

But there's something better than on the real world - we're not talking about FIAT economies, we're talking about economies that run with programmable money, and wonderful things such as blockchain, hasgraph, and all of those technologies.

Imagine yourself trying to build your virtual fortune, a fortune you can just use to pay your real-life stuff, and you're doing what you like... in a sort of gamified way, much like in Steemit - but in a whole new world.

I told you this article would be exciting.

Digital Real-Estate: Gone with the Old...

... in with the new. Virtual Real-Estate up to now was a site, or a banner space on said site.

Things will get a fresh new meaning though.

People will need their own corner in their virtual world. A place they can hang out in private, with their friends, loved ones, crushes and platonic long-distance relationships.

Enter the Virtual Realtor.

The guy who uses his tokens to invest in properties and selling it.

But hey, people who get rich in the offline world... they tend to spend it on stupid things.

And do you think things will be different in a Virtual World?

Vanity Items: Spending Crypto on Virtual Luxuries

Unique items, collector stuff, expensive stuff...

Why should virtual worlds be any different than the offline one. You already see a HUGE digital economy on virtual cosmetic items in games like Heroes of the Storm, League of Legends, CS:GO.

And those are old school compared to a fully functional VR World, much like Skyrim VR in multiplayer mode, powered by Crypto.

And for those who don't like to spend their hard earned crypto well...

...HODL

I hope you liked this post,

It was different, but it shows you how my two great passions, virtual reality and the crypto world, can be teamed up in the future to create a wonderful reality.

I'm Max, and I promise you I was sober when writting this.

Cheers

wow! Skyrim is my favorite game ever!! I only played it on a 360 so no mods but with all the extensions (I choose the vampire hunters, and of course I end up destroying Mirak or whatever his name was + collecting every one of those weird black books lol).

So many years without playing my favorite game I miss it, I have never felt such a epic sensation as when fighting vs a random dragon while exploring and the song start to roll :D I have been waiting for a new elder scrolls for years (the online game doesn’t count haha)

About crypto with games, it certainly sounds like a good idea. I believe there are already games with their own currency although it is not crypto obviously. It would be great to earn a living while doing activities and having fun in a world like the one from the elder scrolls, probably a dream come true for many of us.

I will leave this awesome video of Skyrim with the song from the YouTuber malukah for all of you to enjoy

Dude... I have done pretty much everything on Skyrim already, but in VR is is a whole other game.
You simply must try it.

This is so cool, I had never thought of it. And it's completely possible that it'll happen, some moment in the future. The thing is, I think virtual reality is not going to see their best moment until you can move without the need for a controller, and without needing to move. Basically, when we can control the thing with our brains, and be as free as we are in the real world. That's when everything is going to change.

The only thing I think I don't get is: how people are going to work only for virtual reality jobs? I mean, if you have a real life and a virtual life, you will need to maintain both, so you will need more money than if you only have a real life. So people working only on virtual jobs will need a minimum earn bigger than people just working and living in the real world. And if they sell their services at a higher price, then prices will go high, and virtual life is going to be expensive, and people will need to earn more money in order to maintain their virtual life. Is there any solution, or something I'm not considering?

Bots and AI will take mechanical jobs... Humans will take creative jobs... I dont say they will only work in VR... I say that some will only work in VR.

And Im not seeing how virtual jobs need to pay more than real ones.

I mean, if you have a virtual life, you'll need to spend more money in order to live than if you just have your normal real life. If someone works at a virtual job, then that person will have to maintain two lives, that's why I think it will need to earn more in order to survive. That said, I think salaries are going to get higher and higher and survival will not be a worry anymore, so even if you have to spend more money, you'll be able to even if you aren't earning more o.o

I disagree... you spend less working at home in VR than getting out commuting to wokr having a meal there etc..

Thank you for your very clear, step-by-step breakdown and synthesis of VR and crypto. Blowing mind gently.

Will have to re-read several times to absorb and go deep enough to better understand the implications and possibilities. Amazingggg!

Upvoted and resteemed but also FB/tweeting so non-Steem peeps can see and come on in. ;)

You do well in sharing stuff outside Steem, raises our visibility :D Thank you very much for sharing my stuff Angela, and I'm glad you took value from the post.
Cheers, see you around.

Awesome read. I guess cryptocurrencies like Electroneum are trying to address exactly this. It would be splendid. I wonder one thing though, will not people get bored with their real lives and the real world economy get impacted? Suppose a large part of the population are busy in virtual industrial activities. What happens to the real world then?? May be that's where AI and robotics will pitch in. Boy what a future!!!

Yeah, we're talking distant future now but in it creative activities are the only things worth doing for humans, all mechanical jobs will be done by ai and robots, even call center help is already being done by revolutionary AI.

The future is a great place... we're a generation witnessing a huge change...

Our fathers, both mine and yours, witnessed cars replacing chariots and stuff like that... now we witness this change... imagine the change our sons will notice!
Cheers man

Wow, that is pretty incredible to imagine. I have never tried VR, I’ve always wanted to. I assume some people would never leave the house again...😂 i think decentraland is a little like this too. I hope they will make the tech more affordable, I just got a new laptop and my sister who’s into gaming said there’s no way my new laptop would be able to handle it.

Yeah, I bought a laptop for VR and it costed me $1800.

I still know it's going to be obsolete for VR in 1 year :D

VR is a powerhungry demon.

What about Decentraland do you use it?

I bought some Mana tokens back in December because I like the idea of it, I haven't used it, im pretty technologically challanged. I was reading that someone paid $140K for a virtual land plot. I think thats a pretty good sign that people are interested in virtual worlds for business.

Yeap, I saw those stats too... seemed way too steep for me :D

You are sober! Super sober! lol :) I like how you fused your addiction with Skyrim with Cryptocurrencies! Crypto is the new age. ♥

Hehehe
I am a little bit addicted, true :P But only on VR.... it is really something else.
Can't wait for the next generation of VR Headsets.

And again: awesome article!
Yes of course cryptos could have huge potential in virtual worlds...but to be adopted longterm and from the masses it will need much more time i guess!

Well a couple more years I guess.
I'm hopeful that this year is the year, but FIAT is fighting a good fight. Maybe next year.

I agree, it's great . And adding crypto currencies to the virtual world is like peanut butter and jelly . Second life is still around (https://marketplace.secondlife.com/), and Mana coin (https://decentraland.org/) is a good example.
Also interesting ideas, The Po.et Token for artists (https://www.po.et/token) and musicoin for musicians (https://musicoin.org/how-it-works).

The future of VR is going to be really cool.

I agree.
Plus, did you know I was a Second Life Tycoon once ? :P
Cheers

No, I did not.

Did you know I was a Second Life Vagabond?

No I did not. What would you do»?

Just wander around, and explore...

Pretty much you described The Oasis in Ready Player One where people use it to go to school, have jobs, build virtual real estate and have market places.

Characters would have skill sets and professions in the same way we have niches here.

I never watched that, sounds like my kind of movie.

Read the book! Then watch the movie this March! It's a must do!

Just plug in your head to the neural interface and you're good to go!

Sword Art Online style.
