Have the payouts on Steemit turned into a mass circle jerk?

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Lately I’ve been noticing something odd about Steemit payouts.

There are clearly a lot more people on Steemit since May, and most of them have bugger all followers and make next to nothing for their posts. That is to be expected, it takes most people a while to find an audience here.

Now to go on about myself a bit here, in 2016 my highest post payout was $404 for this post – https://steemit.com/photography/@sift666/my-obsessive-polaroid-photo-fetish

Meanwhile, this year, the best I have pulled down is $22.29 for this post - https://steemit.com/life/@sift666/not-safe-for-work

Maybe it’s because I’m not putting in as much effort into my posts. And that is true, I’m not, because I’ve been a bit busy. But yesterday I had a crack at doing a post more like what I was posting last year. And It pulled down $2.50.

https://steemit.com/steemit/@sift666/steemit-is-replacing-blogs-spams-and-fakebooks

Meanwhile there are some people making over $500 for everything they post.

This morning I was reading a post that had just made $500. It was an OK post, perfectly competent, but not really that awesome.

If I posted it, I would probably make about $2. If @kiwideb posted it, maybe $20. And @dollarvigilante - the most popular person on Steemit with 5948 followers would probably get about $200 for it.

So now I’m thinking $500 a post, for every post, one every day – that is getting a bit odd.

I don’t want to name any names because I don’t want to get blubbered to death by a pod of incestuous whales, but WTF?

People have been talking about circle jerks. And they don’t mean the thrash band, they mean the soggy biscuit.

All I’m looking for is a few soggy crumbs, and now a bunch of new punters seem to consider old timers like me well established Steemians.

I’m starting to think this may be a bit of an issue. Hopefully the new hard-fork will improve things in this area.

Great pie you have there haha. I do think this can be an issue but as long as new people will keep powering up we will become whales eventually and able to change things if need be. And as you say, the hard fork should change things as well

You have 18 votes on your comment - are you the spawn of whale?

Fish pie.

Even fish PI aRe round.

I know this is serious subject matter but I just had a good laugh. Fantastic illustrations!! Especially that cake... god help me I hope that was a bachelorette party. I'm going to follow you so I hopefully see more pieces like this from you!

Brilliant that gives me an excuse to post some circle jerk pics!

But holy crap your comment has more votes than my post - are you a pet whale?

Lol who knows? I've had sugar daddies... now I don't know if I should be turned on having a whale daddy or be scared shitless!

Hahaha you have a great sense of humor.

I've noticed my own posts going down in average payout value as well, but I think it's a lot harder for folks to find your posts with all the follows running through your feeds.

Of course, knowing me, I've probably pissed off a lot of people too ;>

Like you, I think the new fork will even things out a bit

Worst comes to worst, you can always upvote your own posts

Jeepers I have been up voting every post I do and every comment I post myself since last August :)

I haven't started upvoting my own comments yet...that often ;>

I don't see any reason not to do it though...investing SP into the platform means you can get your return the best way you see fit

I also up-vote every person that comments on one of my posts, unless they piss me off, so don't piss me off

great pic to demonstrate the concept

Always a fine idea, I might add. It seems to get the ball rolling for others. No one wants to be the first to vote on something, I think. Of course, that's just most people. I will happily vote on something first for someone, again, to encourage others to vote on what may be an excellent quality post.

No one wants to be the first to vote on something, I think.

strange...we should want to be the first to vote on any comment we think is valuable; all the following votes add to our value.

Hell I even vote before the value-returned mark if I like the blog

I agree. I think maybe people who are new to the platform don't really understand the benefits of curation. They SHOULD want to be the first to vote on a post, especially one that may get a lot of other votes, or trend. But, I have noticed many good posts with no votes, and the posts have been up for a while. Often, if I give it an upvote, other votes follow. Just something I've noticed.

It's hard to post, keep up multiple convos, read others blogs, and do all of this at once!

and I do remember a steeper learning curve on Steemit when I began as well.

It's easy to bugger things up when rushing

Voting is one the best parts of Steemit!

Agreed!

You are a trendsetter

Sure am. :)

And, I dress just like those women, too. ;)

I LOVE how you just respond with weird pictures. Lol!

Call that weird?

Oh, we're going deep down the rabbit hole, aren't we? ;)

If it weren't for my loyal core of about two to three dozen followers, I wouldn't have even topped out at $40 for my most successful post in eight or so months. It looks like I'm going to have to start posting only about cryptocurrency.

I swear if I had an autonomous orgasm machine, that would give the user a 1000 year lifespan, and fart money while it's doing it, and I made it from ingredients readily available from the grocery, I could post all day about how to make one in your sleep, without even thinking about it, and I'd still get 24 votes and make about $20.

Ten days ago your awesome post on glyphosate made $30!

https://steemit.com/health/@lifeworship/a-closer-look-at-glyphosate

But what has really freaked me out is that up to now I thought you posted awesome posts every day, totally raked it in, and were like a whale yourself. But now I've seen your wallet. And mine is actually comparatively well stocked... Stunned!

If you had the same blubbery followers as that guy who gets $500 for every post, you would get $5000 for an orgasm machine post!

They actually frigging exist...

I was happy with the glyphosate post's performance. It's a shame that I have to know so much about it. I think that was my third post on the subject.

There is an argument to be made that orgasms have driven progress in every aspect of civilization. Now that there is a machine to do it, what is to become of the human? Will we be like the panda?

Hey sift666, Sure there is a circle jerk element, but there is also a consistency issue.
The fact that people use autobots is well known. So, if you want to compare elements of a post, there can be many things that factor into the motive of the voters.
I vote on interesting, not quality. Some vote for minnows, some vote for curation rewards, some really care about the quality elements you discussed, and if they happen to see it in the flood of posts, they will upvote it. More users also means more competition.

Sharing a different perspective for discussion not arguing.

This topic has been being discussed recently on steemspeak and of course in other posts. I like hearing the different views.

it's actually good that people use differing voting strategies; it makes it harder for bots to game the system

A good teacher understands his subject, a great teacher understands their students.

Because you are clearly a whale I'm going to post a pic of some plankton

I can tell from your icon that you are one of THEM - from the whale pod...

lol, you should check my wallet. ;) You will see it isn't so. I have been on here nearly full-time since Aug.

Just recently, my posts have started to do better.

I just offered a different perspective, I didn't attempt to insult you.

Enjoy.

Because you have insulted my manhood I'm going to post an evil plankton pic

lol, ok!

Great post - I finally read it when all the comments here stopped popping up, have commented on it and followed you now:

Very good points - up until now I didn't give this stuff too much thought, but lately it's been really obvious that factors other than content quality are determining most of the cash flow.

I'm a big fan of Steemit, and will ride it out, but I can see a lot of people will get discouraged.

For me the other big factor has been that what I've learned here about cryptocurrencies has been far more profitable than the payouts!

Right now, with the higher price of Steem, there are many people posting anything, from anywhere, trying to get rich quick. The truth is that Steem will eventually devalue (unless there is more ransomware on its way, which needs laundering) and all of these copy-paste folk will eventually leave, which is what happened after the initial hype last year. We really need to downvote any content with non-original content, so actual content creators get noticed and paid better. And having exclusive content will keep the price of Steem higher than with copy pasted copyright infringing materials.

Followed you, myself - have a good day!

Looks like your only attracting minnows. The whales should spend more time in the bathroom so they can appreciate some laughs.

Oh crap it looks like my audience is all small fry...

You got my vote, but being plankton I didn't move the needle. Your still at $2.25

I'm going to cash out and buy some plankton to eat myself!

sift666 You have some HUGE (can I use that word) collection of fish related photos. And I am amazed how fast you can post them.

Looks like the joker in batman.

By the way, I've been noticing some 35-45 rep bloggers racking up a bunch of votes on comments instantly without any idea as to why. I want this! And I want to know why!
