The Reputation Purge on Steemit

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

The latest implementation of User Rep has been added to SteemIt today and already it's killed off the biggest bot on SteemIt

@wang is now dead

Well, he's still alive but his reputation isn't

@wang was one of the first user on Steemit to feel the sting of flags. A bot that we've all come to know and love as the welcome bot woke up today to find it had a -8 reputation. The lowest possible rep you can achieve. @wang bot will no longer be seen on posts unless you're following wang. You can check out his cheeky farewell post here. His creator must have a rad sense of humor cause he's made light of the situation. Wang will now be flagged on most posts and his reputation most likely wont recover. Let us take a moment to remember the bot we all came to love. Maybe these bots can go find a job else.

Not all Good Bots will die

Not all bots are bad and can actually help monitor content here on SteemIt

Most of us didn't mind @wang being that he was a friendly bot that gave you articles to read and genuinely made you feel welcomed. My favorite bot is @cheetah A bot that's been monitoring for spam and Copyright. Cheetah's attained a good reputation and could possibly survive the bot apocalypse. The bad bots will not. @isaac.asimova , a bot that posts the same dumb ass comment on every post has without a doubt died too. It's blog page no longer exists.
I imagine the good bots may form an alliance somewhere down the track, the Voltron of Steemit.

Not Just Bots but Spammers Too

This is only the beginning of the purge. Enjoy it. Now we'll be able to hang out with the more genuine users.

You may have heard of the term Catfish. These are users on Steemit that aren't actually who they say they are, pretend to be someone else, just for the fortune and fame. They are some of the biggest Spam scammers here...
Not any more. A lot of these users have already been heavily flagged. Like a post we saw from someone reposting the story of an ex-heroin addict that they had copied from another site, the author can no longer be found. These kind of users are feeling the purge.

Not only Catfish but Spammers as well. People who've been spamming post after post hoping to get a pay out. Most of us have been guilty of this at one point or another, but those who've done it constantly are feeling the wrath of their actions.
A friend I introduced to Steemit hasn't coped well from the upgrades. Already he's against the reputation scheme, understandably so as he's now got a negative rep. He's suggested that this could create a gap between whales and regular users where whales can flag anyone and make them disappear. I disagree but it's a good point worth avoiding in the future. For now though, you'll be fined everytime you make a crap post. Keep this in mind when you post from now on.

Thank You Steemit Development

This upgrade is my favorite thing since first finding the site..

You can click here to check the original post from @dantheman that explains the new numbering system next to your name.

Reputation scores work like earthquake richter scales, they operate on log base 10. In other words a reputation level 8 is 10 times stronger than reputation level 7. Likewise, -8 is 10 times more negative than -7.

Those with weaker reputations are unable to harm the reputation of those with strong reputation.

I posted a sensible rant about people being real with themselves and the Steemit community. This reputation scheme was implemented exactly for that reason. To keep us real. Now we're able to see exactly which authors are worth reading. Thanks Steemit.
This new development will be very beneficial to myself in the near future with the release of an exclusive Steemit Record Label, Thirsty Records, helping us to guage audience appeal.

I'm logging off now to put in work for Thirsty Records, I hope you enjoyed the quick post from a level 7 Steemer.

Stay Real Steemit!

There was a user named @webocel who made a post about how hard it was in Argentina. He made $126 SD and was doing well.

Problem with him, is that he started spamming a link to his story everywhere, whether or not it had to do with the topic or not.

He upset a lot of people, who said "we feel for your story, and upvoted it. But please stop spamming all of steemit with the link". Every minute, he'd add another link, and another one, and another one.. and he wouldn't stop.

For that day, he really was his own version of @wang

I ended up sending a direct transfer of $5.00 SD to him to help him with his fundraiser with the comment "to help your crowdfunder for your family. please stop spamming links though"

On his $126 post, he even replied "ok, I am done spamming links now"

After he received my donation, about an hour later, he was back to spamming again, and pissed off more people.

In the end, his account is now a (-6). Now we can go on and on about desperate times call for desperate measures...

I feel that if he had just waited, and left well enough alone, he would have went viral (because he already was up there! +$100 is enough to grab attention)

So if you want a prime example of someone who knew they were abusing the system (12 days ago today), you will see him say things like:

Need a Job I vote your post and I ask please that you see my post
sorry for the spam but I'm desperate for funds to be self employed

..and he did that on post, after post, after post..

Classic. Kind of sad too. If he were really struggling he could've garnered a lot of support here but instead through it away.
We'll see how this new reputation system plays out with impatient people. Seems a few people are already upset. Which is a little funny because we no longer see their posts. I'm a little torn but overall happy with it so far.

people i stg

I like the idea of the bots forming an alliance...ha. Also, some valuable content here of things I've just thought about and not really pondered. Thanks.

I wish I had known a reputation label was going to be stuck on me ahead of time. I would not have been as candid, honest and straight forward if I knew I was going to be judged by the masses.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, the rep system is nothing but a very coarse analytics tool. It was only a matter of time until a first attempt would be made, and it will not be long until more powerful tools are able to distinguish those with uncomfortable opinions from those who really are just spamming.

Edit: There were a couple typos that I've now fixed. Hope you all enjoyed the read. Stay tuned.

With the reputation system comes other perks for the future. Take a look at this proposal if you have the time Decentralized Steemit Marketplace

I appreciate you taking the time to read a fellow steemians post. Wish you success along your path to bigger and better fish

I think this system sucks. Creates colaterale damage. Destroyed the biggest bot, but ruined my reputation for cracking a few jokes.

We had to destroy the village in order to save it.
