Buying & Selling Goods & Services On Steemit - The Future Of A Decentralized Marketplace

Making A Decentralized Marketplace Work On Steemit

Even before the feedback system was instituted, I was thinking about ways to bring value to steemit from people who may never want to blog, but have goods or services they wish to offer other users and are tired of paying ebay's fees. Ebay offers a great service, but sellers are being charged increasingly large amounts of money to continue selling there.

Steemit has the opportunity to expand on what a site like ebay can. Not only can physical goods be bought and sold, but services like photo / video editing, content editing, song writing, and any other (legal) service can be offered at a price to users of steemit.

With the reputation system rolling out already, a buyer and seller feature could be similarly implemented. While initially the goods and services should be limited to a certain dollar amount to keep a buyer from sending steem or steem dollars and the seller never sending the good or service. On each user account, you should have the ability to leave feedback when you purchase something or sell something to or from another user.

Those that take advantage of the system will have feedback in the negative and no longer able to participate in the buying or selling through this market. It may be beneficial to have some witnesses resolve any buyer and seller disputes and to try to make sure that both users are happy with the transaction. Again your reputation means everything and to be able buy higher dollar items or sell them, you would need to have a certain amount of positive feedback.

As per ebay - " How are Feedback scores calculated? "

Ebay's Feedback System Here

Hopefully in the near future people will be able to list goods and services with hashtags (hashtag)editing, (hashtag)appbuilding, (hashtag)songwriting, (hashtag)pokemon-cards, (hashtag)cell-phone) so that buyers can do a simple search and see a list of goods and services available sorted by default with the highest positive feedback for sellers.

Example experience for Buyer:

  • Search for (hashtag)cellphone
  • See list of users selling cell phones based on seller rating feedback (also can search further, eg iphone android etc.)
  • Send seller requested amount of steem/steem dollars for product (including shipping) with a note describing item and transaction
  • Seller notifies buyer by secure messaging system or email to exchange mailing address if needed
  • Product is received by buyer
  • Feedback is left for seller
  • Product is enjoyed
  • Creator of this selling platform receives a very small percentage of the sale (should decrease over time as more transactions occur) so initially, maybe a penny per transaction because of the small amount of transactions, but when the transactions become a million a day, the fee can be even less. The developer of this project should be rewarded, but doesn't need to be greedy like ebay is because of its shareholders.

Example experience for Seller:

  • Seller lists good or item with description and pictures similar to ebay and add tags to the listing to make it easier to find for buyers
  • Seller receives payment for product including shipping
  • Seller is told the buyers address and email address to mail goods/service
  • Seller ships item
  • Seller leaves feedback for the buyer

In a perfect world this would be the end of the transaction, but there will be disputes that occur. Hopefully steemit can join a free listing site like craigslist paid listing site like ebay to get the both of best worlds. A very low fee marketplace that has a feedback system to keep people honest

This is the very early grass roots idea for a system like this and hiccups will come along the way. I know there is already a payment system being implemented and tested, and I hope this will add value to further the steemit platform. I would be happy to work with a team or hear feedback here as well. The ideas are endless, as reputation becomes worth more than its weight in gold. There won't be any whales with negative feedback who will survive here. People can always take advantage of a system, so initially smaller dollar items should be sold until everything is ironed out. I'm excited to see what might come of this and where it will lead.

I'd appreciate feedback or links to other people's posts that have similar ideas about creating a marketplace for steemit. You will then be able to show friends you can simply sell things here and not need to blog at all, which is of little interest to some.

My dream would be to see the following happpen. A new musician signs up and blogs about their music. Then posts a few songs and gets constructive feedback and criticism from users. Then releases an album that can be purchased directly from the musician in SBD or Steem. As the musician gains success and engages with their following, they can offer different merchandise and concert tickets all if one spot with steemit. I would love to have some musicians, artists, photographers really take advantage of this platform and become successful. Being able to be supported from the very beginning with a small following all the way up to mega stardom. It would be cool to say you went to a concert of someone whose career was launched by steemit, and even cooler to say you helped fund one of their first projects

I don't know about you, but I'm excited!!! STEEM ON

Because of how valuable and simple this concept is, I think it's safe to assume that we'll ale be using it regularly in a few month's time. Just gotta let the third-party devs work their magic. :)

Maybe you know people that can get this more visible. Idk anyone that isn't unbelievably busy right now. @stellabelle and @rok-sivante are way too busy at the moment to be able to respond. Any help is appreciated. As much as I would like to benefit financially from this post, I understand that even if I don't, in the long run it will add so much value that it will be worth it to everyone.

I'm pretty sure this is one of those things that will happen soon whether we say anything or not. Steemit is capitalist to its core and nothing seems more appropriate than a market. I give it a month before we see something like this coming down the pipes... I can mention it in a video or article though, if you like.

Absolutely! I am sure it is in the pipeline, but unlike other social media websites, we each have a voice. I've come up with a very bare bones idea as I am not a developer and only know a bit of html/css and limited javascript (nothing building programs on the blockchain/apps) but I think if some of the people make their voices heard here or after your video, I think as a collective, creative community we have the potential to make a decentralized market that surpasses what is available at the moment and each user can voice their ideas without having a CEO make the decisions solely. The developers have a vested interest in all of us, so I think the more quality ideas are bounced around, the better the first and subsequent rollouts will be. The addition of non bloggers is critical in my opinion as many people may feel they missed the boat even though it is just sailing right now. It's an exciting time for steemit and the users that are faithful to it.

I second that, we'll be using it in a few months! You wanna hear something funny? Here's what I wrote a few days back:

And I suspect that it will be only a matter of time than until we see a great steem market place.

We were thinking about the same! :) Great post, I hope it gets more attention :)

Yes you actually mentioned all of my favorite bloggers I love them all. Especially @stellabelle for welcoming me before I had any idea who she was or that she was an incredibly talented writer. The follow button feed can't come out soon enough haha as it gets harder and harder to navigate back and forth between my favorite posters and remembering the names of new ones. Best of luck to you and if there is anything you could benefit from me doing, whether research or figuring out technology etc. I'm happy to help those that are working hard to bring consistently great content here. I know it will not only benefit steemit now, but in the long run as we continue growing and learning. Happy blogging!

Your comments are more than enough help, and for that I'm thankful! I wish you he best of luck as well! Thank you!

You are truly welcome! If you need or know of anyone looking to collaborate on anything i really am willing to help and i will try to bring some more new users your way to read your unique style

I think this is a fantastic idea and I hope somebody picks it up and runs with it! Imagine a Steem where people from "the outside world" needing to acquire Steem Dollars so they can come participate in our thriving marketplace.

Thank you for reading this. I will happily promote other people's ideas and I would so love to reach out to those that see "blog" and immediately think "I'm not a writer, I can't do this" with almost nonexistent transaction fees, users with a 6 or higher should be very trustworthy, because if not their reputation will be tarnished. Offering books of photography or self published works could be a great way to cut the cost of offering on centralized platforms like eBay and Amazon. The only way to make it really work is through trust, so at the beginning buyers should not purchase high dollar items because there would be the potential for a seller to just take the money and never come back and come away with a few hundred dollars. This would be foolish on their part, but as with trolls, there will always be bad apples. I'd so love for steemit to expand as it will help everyone from minnow to whale and if you sell good products or services, it won't matter if you join now or five years from now. You still have the opportunity to blog or sell and make money. The pieces are here, and may be able to be a step ahead of the open bazaar that is not as social media friendly. Maybe it inspires someone at the very least

I had the idea that Steemit should have a market like this a few weeks ago. Anyone know why something like this hasn't been implemented yet?

Steembay isnt the best choice for a name... it might imply something you don't intend to.

That said, there's already several WP commerce plugins, and it wouldnt be that hard to integrate them with the chain.

It not going to be in the first release, but its the first thing on my "to do" list after i get my site up (some time today)

Yes a much better name should be created for a platform like this. I'd love to hear ideas. I'm sure eBay would have lawsuits if someone were to use their name without any compensation. I am hoping that people will be inspired to create rival programs.

well, that and it sounds like you want to be a DNM.. the largest one right now is alphabay

Yes, but allowing users to already earn steem dollars for creating content and be able to easily spend it will be a game changer. A lot more people would be comfortable here, than would be on a shadier looking site like alphabay with gambling in the feed at the top, and people are still wary of bitcoin, even though steemit is funded with this, you can put in 0 dollars, post content and get steem dollars, buy goods with no need to change into fiat money. I think that will be great as mony are not comfortable with moving cryptocurrencies around on exchanges.

thank you for sharing! I share the same thought. the only thing I beg to differ is the proposed name Steembay - Steemit doesn't need to mimic anyone. as long as Steemit successfully connect people together with its own financial system, the development of marketplace will emerge in due course. because people is the key to every activities.

To be honest that was click bait and something everyone would probably wonder about. I would be happy to have any name proposals and interested in working with a team to create their own program to help flesh out this idea

@bendjmiller222 , you can set the logic of the software to hold the buyers funds promised to the seller in a que and then those funds only get released to the seller after they provide a legit tracking number. The system should be able to read the tracking number and report the details of the package location to prevent fraud and then once those conditions are met the logic of the software will allow for the funds to go to seller.

thats gamable

Everything is gamable, but with reputation basically being the only way you can continue making monetary rewards here, cheating the system or other users a few times will hurt you in the long run for a few bucks up front. Trust will be involved for sure at the start as it will be in beta and so smaller crafts and similar items should be sold at first. I'd love to have people that know how to game the system weigh in and be rewarded so any major holes can be plugged to keep all users safe and happy with a steemit marketplace.

@sigmajin , I wasn't assuming it was full proof. I know there are people out there who do their best to scam others. I was thinking of eliminating the need to have human interventions to complete normal transactions between two normal trustworthy people.

Great idea! I was thinking a system like that would be beneficial so that the seller doesnt hold all the weight of power. Thats the sort of quality commenting we should all try to do

Actually I've seen a few people sell things on Steemit @craig-grant being one of them.

I love @craig-grant and I think that's awesome and have seen people post things for sale, but would like to see a dedicated service or tab to have a steemit store. Also people should have the opportunity to not have the post with goods count toward their four daily posts. Seeing as only 5 hashtags may be used, this limits the tags you can put on an item as well. I like people selling already, but want to make the experience even more user friendly

I would like to set up a store front on steembay, how do I do that?

Nice @bendjmiller222
Shot you an Upvote :)
