Make Steem while you sleep - the joy & controversy of Steemit bots

in #steemit7 years ago

Time is my biggest problem when it comes to Steemit.

I want to consistently upvote everyone I am following but a lack of time prohibits this.

And now that I run a Facebook group (Aspiring Steemit Whales & Dolphins) in which I have promised to consistently upvote all who post there I find myself in the frustrating position of not being able to deliver on my promise.

Especially with the terrible, intermittent internet I experience here in Bali.

I am expecting the birth of my second child any day now and in preparation for the upcoming period in which I have promised to not open my laptop (somewhat reluctantly) I wanted to find a way in which I could continue my upvoting.

The solution

Many thanks to @craig-grant who mentioned the use of a voting bot in one of his films just at the moment I was contemplating my dilemma.

I must also extend a thanks to @rok-sivante whose post on this subject two months ago helped me find what I was looking for. He said this to the community in his post: "I will hereby give 100% of the profits from this post to whoever programs a simplified bot and makes it available to all Steemit users, which allows them to automatically vote for posts by authors of their choice, complete with simplified instructions for how to set it up."

A noble gesture which I am sure he carried out quickly, because in the responses to this post, right at the top was the answer:

steemvoter.com by @marcgodard
https://steemvoter.com

I assume there are many such programs now, but my experience of Steem Voter has been completely painless. Other than the aching fingers I had after tapping at my keyboard for three hours to input my list of people I would like to upvote consistently.

The controversy

It is thought by some that an automated voting system takes away from the human side of this platform and to quote @tamersameeh 'give rewards to those who don't really deserve it'.

@rok-sivante responded with these words: "if I use a bot, I choose who goes on the list and gets my rewards. I would not put anyone on the list who I feel does not deserve it. And I would continually check in to make sure those authors are continuing to post quality content - if they slipped up and I felt they didn't deserve my rewards any longer, they'd be off the list."

I could not have said it better myself.

Of course, one may easily fall into the trap of never reading anyone's post again. But this would be foolish of them.

Why we must never stop reading the posts!

  • This platform is ever evolving and one must keep their ear to the ground if they are to advance their knowledge & skills here, even beyond the boundaries of Steemit. Just as it is with @busy.org who are expected to publicly release their Beta version of another social media platform which utilises the Steem Blockchain any day now. If we never looked at our feed to digest the words of others we would have no knowledge of them at all.

  • We must always look to find new people who are deserving of our upvote. Without our help & support they will vanish from this platform without a trace.

  • Always remember that even a useful comment in response to a post can generate Steem. I have seen people earning up to $10 from a few simple words at the bottom of my own work, which is sometimes more than the post itself earns. This is a fantastic aspect of our platform and we must always take advantage of this by sharing our wisdom freely and enjoying the rewards if our words ring true with people.

  • The best thing of all about this platform is the outstanding content. And it would be crazy to miss out on all the new information being provided by the open-minded members of this amazing community.

We are ground breakers, risk-takers & pioneers in the world's largest social media experiment... which by the way was quoted in Forbes magazine last week as being the fastest growing decentralised social media platform ever.

And it would seem to me that this experiment has been a resounding success. Whilst I know tweaks still need to be made, there can be no argument that the system doesn't work. Thankfully the tweaks are coming soon and the user experience will be greatly simplified, encouraging even the most untechnical of people to join us. A drag and drop picture system is just one of these many upcoming tweaks, immediately eliminating the need for a secondary site and ultimately speeding up our user experience.

The advanced bot

Reading through the responses to Rok's request I can see that @biophil has created something even more advanced than the standard upvoting bot. In his own words:

"I operate a private curation service for a limited number of clients:

https://steemit.com/curation/@biophil/milestone-reached-i-m-the-best-curator-on-steemit

My bot attempts to maximize curation rewards, which means it never ever votes for those curation wastelands like steemsports and curie. It attempts to predict which posts are going to be successful, but have not yet received many votes."

This sounds pretty amazing to me and is certainly the kind of bot the whales & dolphins need to be using! The growth of this platform is dependent on the support of newcomers who are producing quality content. I would be interested to find out how successful the use of this bot has been. If anyone has any information on this, please let me know in the comments below.

In conclusion

I am most grateful for the voting bot programs and welcome them with open arms. Especially due to my current situation. But like Rok I will review my list regularly and read as much as I can to make sure my upvote is not going to people who have become lazy with their content or indeed begin utilising their own bots to create posts, as it appears to be with accounts such as @ozchartart.

The bot is not an excuse to be lazy, but rather a tool for helping us consistently support others and create more time in which to dazzle the community with our awesome posts.

Thank you for reading. Hope this has been helpful.

I have been testing bots for a while and @personz will take the cake once it is finished in the next week or two. Give him a follow for the launch.

Thank you. I will follow them now. Looking forward to the launch :)

Thank you for your support of our service, we have been feeling underappreciated of late.

The cool thing about our service is you can go away on holiday and still be sure that your friends and other people you have a mutually supportive relationship with still get voted in your absence and you keep earning curation rewards.

I see from your article that the most difficult part about using our service was the inputting of all the authors' names to start with. I have spoken to @marcgodard about implementing a csv file management system and hopefully we can look into that in future.

Thanks again, your post is appreciated.

I travel a lot and like the SteemVoter as it does help me support those folks in my feed even in my absence.

I still read and comment when I can.

Absolutely, reading & commenting just becomes easier when you know all your upvotes have already been done :)

It is my pleasure recommending your very useful tool. Sorry to hear you have been feeling under-appreciated. Hope this post helps and thanks very much for speaking to @marcgodard about making the system easier to use. In reality, spending three hours now will save me countless hours in the future, so it's not a problem for me. But any improvements I am sure will be much appreciate by all those who are new to it.

Thanks again and looking forward to the birth of my baby now :)

Hello again @thecryptodrive I realise now that have put 160 people into my list on Steem Voter and there is a cap at 100. Is this correct? If so, would you consider giving me a test month with this cap unlocked? I promise to continue promoting your product!

Hey, hit me a message on Discord or Steemit.chat to @thecryptodrive

I started using SteemVoter. It's easy and gives me the ability to ensure I do vote. Sometimes I just need the extra help. As you said now I can read the post and let the not vote. In one since maximizing curation yet limiting to the people I have selected. You are correct there are other tools. Some do need your internet connection to run.

Congrats on your new baby. You'll have plenty to write about here in the near future

Thank you ! I will find out more about Steemvoter

Mamasita I also use steemvoter. It's work.

I wonder how to use this . I really need to look into this option

Thank you my friend. I appreciate your comment and look forward to the development of these bots to accommodate more advanced requirements...

After reading your post, I feel that I am so oldschool what means I am exhausted after a while, need breaks like every human being would need and that's why I just vanish from time to time. I would not mind to get a helping hand 👾 but I would miss the personal interactions . I realized that I am in @roksivante list . I miss his energy though ! It's just a bot !

I know what you mean about the personal interaction. This is super important. Especially if you are looking to build your own following, which this bot most certainly won't do for you.

I am also pretty tired after a very intense period on Steemit and in truth I am actually really looking forward to closing this computer for a few weeks and simply enjoying my life with a new family member :)

hard but fun work for a zillion of hours since I joined :) Get some break and enjoy your baby ! mine is 22 and I wish I would have more time with her but she got her own life now . good vibes back to my Baliland

great blog post

Thank you Craig. I wouldn't have even thought of trying this were it not for your film. Much appreciated :)

I used SteemVoter for a while until I realized their connection with Steemsports which I had stopped supporting when they started the Steemy Games. They also use one of my votes as they wish as part of using their service.

I much prefer Streemian if I'm going to do any autovoting. They offer curation trails which you can join where you put some trust in the leader of the trail or FanBase where you choose your own people to follow.

Those services are free as are the RSS feed that I use the most for finding posts by my favourite authors or in my favourite tags and then choose to curate manually. With Streemian you can get the best of both approaches.

Interesting. Thanks very much. I was not aware of that. So will check it out! :)

Very well written. I ended up 12 posts away before I realized I started with yours. Curation is a tough nut to crack, so I think tools to help are acceptable. Congrats on the second one any day now!

Many thanks for your comment. Yes indeed, I see this as a very useful tool and am most grateful for the time it will buy me. Especially when it comes to my FB group. Looking forward to having another little baby in my life :)

I am the second of seven. My Dad always tells me how he was concerned how he'd be able to love another child as much as the first and then after I was born, how amazed he was that his love was multiplied. In other words, there is no limit to love.

Beautiful words. Thank you & love love love :)

I have been part of Steemtrail since early on thanks to Rick but I also set up SteemVoter. I vote so much between the bots and manually that my voting power seldomly pops above 60%. I think it is a great tool but it needs to be managed. Some authors fade away and some become negative which I can never support.

Absolutely. It needs to be managed. In my current situation however I am simply going to turn the computer off and enjoy my life. And for this it is very useful :)

Congratulations to the coming addition to your family.

Hope this bot thing also works out OK for you.

Many thanks for your congratulations. I also hope the bot thing works out! Since setting it up yesterday I have paid out around $40... let's see now if that actually comes back to me!

You're welcome.
