Newbie Nuggets: How To Prevent Your Post From Being Flagged

in #steemit7 years ago

Flagging is one of the most misunderstood subject at Steemit. Although a lot of users including the veterans dread being flagged, they often wonder why their post was flagged in the first place. In this post I would like to share what you can do to prevent your post from being flagged.

To prevent your post from being flagged, you can take the following actions:-

  1. Do not post articles that can incite hatred.

  2. Do not post child pornography.

  3. Do not copied and paste contents from other sources.

  4. Do not try to pass off content taken from another source as your own work. If your post contained information which taken from another source, the source of the information must be cited. Please note that making minor amendments to contents taken from another source (this is known as the creation of spun articles) may also be flagged.

  5. Photographs/Images which are not taken by you personally should be used with proper attribution. If you do not cite the source of the photographers, you may be perceived as trying to pass off other people's photograph as your own.

  6. You must use the nsfw (not suitable for work) tag if you post nude or graphic images.

  7. Please make sure you use the proper tags which are related to the contents of your post. The use of the more popular tags such as introduceyourself or steemit for contents which are not related to these tags is known as tag spam and may attract flagging.

  8. Avoid spamming in tags which is the excessive use of the same tag. For example the introduceyourself tag is meant for a new user to introduce himself and you should not use this tag to many times. However the permitted frequency is still rather vague.

  9. You must not copy or paste the same comments on too many post. This is known as comment spam. Again the permitted frequency is also rather vague. I have noticed that there are robots which welcomed new users with the same message. However these robots are not penalized. It seems that only human users pasting the same comments are penalized and in a way, this is not fair.

  10. Celebrities or famous creators of blogs or arts need to verify their identities. This is to prevent identity theft and identity deception.

Please note the above list is not exhaustive.

The immediate effect of being flagged is reduction in the earnings of your post. Your reputation may also be adversely affected by flagging, causing it to drop. This is true especially if you are flagged by another user with a higher reputation. Additional flagging will make you post less visible and it may disappear eventually.

Those who have been flagged can either respond directly to @steemcleaners or report to Steemitabuse-appeals channel at Steemit. Chat.

Word Of Advice

Please, please, please do not flag another user, if you disagree with their content or disagree with their views stated in their post.

I see a lot of new people facing this problem and it's a great guide for them to look at

That is the reason why I come up with this post in the first page. I do not want to see new users get discouraged and leave the platform.

Good thinking...but I think if you post number 2 there is something wrong with you, if you post that and wonder why you get flagged...then there is no saving you

very well said! great information

I am happy that you find my post useful. A lot of people are not well-versed about the issue of flagging.

I do believe that at least two of posts were flagged as I received two comments from @steemcleaners , and being a newbie I did not understand that some tags did not relate to the articles that I was posting, I assume that means that many of the posts I have made since then are not being seen,
as I have noticed a decrease in earnings.

The decrease in earnings is not a priority for me, because I am posting content that I believe needs to be seen by as many people as possible, but I would like to know if all of my posts from now on are being flagged. How could I find that out?

You can see a little flag icon on the blog page on your profile next to the posts that are flagged. And no, none of your recent posts have been flagged ;) You also have a pretty decent rep here, so the previous flaggings in the past has not negatively affected your account.

Thank you so much for your response it helps a lot!

No problem, I'm glad I could be helpful :)

@positivesteem
Nice writeup
Good job
Keep it up.

Thank you. I am glad to be of help. That is the spirit of steemit. Do follow for more similar post.

Thanks for posting. I must admit that on other forms of social media, the equivalent of flagging can be rather destructive. Nevertheless, the key really is to act with integrity and "just write" and be yourself, and attribute other people's work. I mean people don't mind their work being shared around (in general), as long as its accurately attributed. So, great advice in your post.

Very aptly put. We would think that this is just common sense. Some people just want to take short cut and in the end they lose out.

Good information for everyone on Steemit

Pls how would you know your post have been flag i notice my earning keep decreasing and if it is so what should i do here is one of my post https://steemit.com/phones/@osasinfo/ten-useful-android-tips-and-trick

Your post is probably decreasing because of the declining value of steem. When you are flagged and you look at your list of votes, you should see a "-" in front of the name of the voter, for example -wthomas, this would indicate a flag. Also if your message was flag with a greater weight, you entire post would have a warning message that it was flagged.

Your post will have this image

Very excellent tips that more people need to pay attention to! No one likes to be flagged, that's for sure! So it's good policy to do the right thing from the beginning. :)

We need to learn the rules and so you say do the right things from the beginning. I am very fortunate that I am first started out, I received a lot of advice when I make these mistakes.

Sometimes people take advice as insults but as long as we're open to suggestions, as long as they are positively given and well meaning, we learn and grow this way. :)

Thanks, that should be the attitude that we should have. I am learning and growing everyday at Steemit. When I first started, I could not even upload an image here.

Then you've definitely improved by leaps and bounds! :D

This one of the reason why I like it here. People are so kind and willing to share their knowledge.

This is another helpful article for new person like me. I'll keep that in mind and try to provide content which won't be provoking hatred. I mean people can disagree with our opinion but well I'll try to go with more neutral content. Thanks again for writing this :)
