SteemTowns - connecting the virtual with the reality - would it be possible?

in #steemit7 years ago

One of the features of attraction in Facebook is the possibility of local connections.

How often do you see the "My toilet is blocked, anyone know a good local plumber", "The snow is falling, is the school open today?", "Help, the Spar (7-Eleven) is closing down, where am I going to get my late night Pringle fix?" type messages on Facebook.

One of the (big) reasons that Facebook has over a billion users I'm sure is the local angle - finding local information, connecting with people in the local area, keeping up to date with local news and gossip...

Although there are steemit meetups popping up around the world they are still few and far between, and generally in major cities.

Of course steemit is still young and innocent and thinly spread. In Wales where I live, I'm not sure if there are more than a few dozen steemians yet.

Steemit wants to grow, and to grow big it will need to evolve.

Part of that evolution will be appealing to the masses. Part of appealing to the masses will be growing the ability to make local connections.

Maybe there is a way to supercharge the local angle by the creation of 'SteemTowns'.

Abersteemit

To explain this let me take you on a short journey into the near future to a small Welsh seaside town called Abersteemit.

Abersteemit only has a population of 3400 people but there are now over 300 people using steemit.

It all began when the Abersteemit Chamber of Trade saw an article online about steemit looking for pioneer SteemTowns.

Like many small towns in Wales (and most likely around the world) Abersteemit is struggling to keep shops open, to get tourists to visit, to keep young people to stay local...

The Chamber of Trade was looking for ways to give the town a boost and to put itself on the map. They sent an email to the SteemTowns Outreach Team and within a few days they had signed up.

Workshops were held, leaflets handed out, talks given to local groups.

Fifteen local businesses signed up in the first week, along with the two local schools, the doctors surgery, the young farmers club and the local youth theatre.

The local history society who are trying to raise money to set up an Abersteemit Museum saw it as a great opportunity to get their collection of old photographs online and to fundraise at the same time.

With only two objections the local Town Council agreed enthusiastically to sign up so they could put the minutes of their meetings online and post tenders for grasscutting and paths maintenance.

They hope it might encourage more people to get involved with the council - they still have five vacant seats to co-opt. They also agreed that any money they earnt on steemit would be put into a special fund to help local charities.

A couple of members of the Town Council raised the issue of whether posts could only be in English. They were reassured that as long as all posts are tagged with #st-abersteemit people could post in Welsh or English.

A local organic veg box scheme jumped at the chance to join in. They are already posting recipes to make with what's in the veg box each week, and they have even put the first video profile on d-tube of one of the local producers that supply the box scheme.

After another workshop with the SteemTowns Outreach Team Anwen Jones who volunteers in the library has been selected Town Curator and Martin Pennington from the history group and Nia Williams from the doctors surgery are assistant curators.

Anwen is also organising 'Get started with steemit' sessions every Wednesday evening in the library.

The SteemTowns Outreach Team helped the Chamber of Trade with the launch of the Abersteemit SteemTown. They even managed to get a minor TV celebrity who lives locally to make the first post at the launch event.

The local paper, the Cambrian News, ran a piece on the launch and already two nearby towns are wanting to launch their own SteemTowns.

We've now just heard that the Welsh TV channel, S4C are going to feature Abersteemit SteemTown on their afternoon show Prynhawn Da next week.

One month into the project and Abersteemit SteemTown already has 307 members on steemit. Altogether they have made over 4,000 posts and nearly 10,000 comments.

Nearly all members are following and upvoting each other. Between them they have 63 posts upvoted by the @Curie project and they have amassed rewards valued at over $60,000.

That is my vision of what could be.

I have spent many years as an activist working on local food projects, engaged on local environmental campaigns, organising local loyalty card schemes, running festivals and trying to get people involved in their community.

Alongside this, in my work life, I have been involved in internet and web development since 1994. That life started by chance when I set up what became one of Britain's largest local online community networks with a six figure user base at its peak.

Now I see a chance to complete that circle.

Could SteemTowns work?

The is a great idea and is exactly what #promo-uk has set out to achieve. By having #promomanchester, #promoaberdeen #promo(yourcity) etc. would allow Steemit Users to Blog about their own town. Both promoting Steemit and promoting their town, cafe, bars, shops etc..!! Stephen

Yes I am looking forward to seeing how these promo/city initiatives develop. In the cities I would anticipate the numbers of people signing up to steemit to be sufficient for the city info aspect to be self-generating and hopefully self-sustaining.

With the SteemTowns idea I am looking much more towards smaller towns where the signup rate from standard promotion would probably not be high enough to create such a 'local buzz' as to fulfil the concept of a SteemTown.

Although this might be too grand a game plan I envisage the creation of a SteemTown to involve much handholding and on the ground assistance.

Although smaller in scale than the promo/cities I suspect the visibility to the media would be much higher. It is much easier to get media interest for new initiatives in small towns than in big cities.

If this is of interest I'll write up more of how I anticipate SteemTowns could be implemented?

This is an amazing idea. I have identified 3 people withing a 120 kilo radius from me that are on STEEMIT. However I keep telling people all over my small community about STEEMIT to build it up.

interesting would be fantastic if this was something that could be started new years day :)

I'm just starting now to flesh out the idea. The first part will be in selecting the towns. Hopefully that will start to pick up interest from others who might want to join in.

abersteemit!! I have a feeling that there will be many more towns such as these, steemtown, steemborough, steemingham, kadthmansteem! the mind boggles, and the potential is also mind boggling!! much appreciate you putting these cool ideas on the #promo-steem tag!! upvoted!

Thank you @starkerz. As I mentioned in my reply to Stephen if you think this idea is worth exploring further let me know and I will document more of my ideas of how it might work in practice.

It certainly has my interest, a plan step by step plan addressing how you envisage a town would exploit the steemit block chain would be great! and also maybe another step by step considering how to go from zero to fully steem towned up! I would be very interested in reading your thoughts on this and maybe participating in the development of the idea going forwards!

Hi @starkerz. I've written up another post progressing this idea. You might be interested to read :

Just going to bed now. Will come back tomorrow with more.

Solid idea my friend! :)

Glad you like it Lyndsay.

I think it is becoming all too easy to get lost in to the digital world.

I am keen to find ways to take the advantages of digital back into the real world to enhance and expand real life connections and communities.

Well, my friend, it seems that I can always count on you to write in a folksy manner as if I was sitting in your living room with you. Oh! BTW, great article. I enjoyed every last crumb.

Hi Aed, I am glad you enjoyed the article. I enjoyed writing it. Now my brain is spinning up to full speed working through the permutations, possibilities and practicalities of how the concept of SteemTowns might be realised.

I can see a lot of organisations that could benefit from a steemtown. It might be worth sharing with a local high school to encourage kids to stay in the area or it will guvr them a link to their hometown if the move on. I'm from a small town myself. I moved to the city after highschool but often wonder how my small town is doing.

Hopefully we can take the idea forward. I'm just working on developing the idea further now. It would be cool to find a few towns around the world to take part.

I'm just writing a post about selecting the towns. I'll be posting that shortly. If you have a few minutes to read it I would appreciate your feedback and thoughts.

Resteemed your article. This article was resteemed because you are part of the New Steemians project. You can learn more about it here: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@gaman/new-steemians-project-launch

Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by Pennsif from the Minnow Support Project. It's a witness project run by aggroed, ausbitbank, teamsteem, theprophet0, someguy123, neoxian, followbtcnews/crimsonclad, and netuoso. The goal is to help Steemit grow by supporting Minnows and creating a social network. Please find us in the Peace, Abundance, and Liberty Network (PALnet) Discord Channel. It's a completely public and open space to all members of the Steemit community who voluntarily choose to be there.

Thank you.

I think it could!! There are other initiatives out there like Ubuntu, Venus project , Transition towns and such. To get those guys on board would explode this steemit community idea! Love it!
