YouTube VS Steemit Enemies or Siblings?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

We all recently noticed how much "Low quality" content is being Up Voted by a very large number of users! But who's fault is this and can it be stopped?

Who's fault is it?

- Ours.

Can it be stopped?

- NO it can't.

Let's take a moment and compare these two, Steemit and YouTube?

  • YouTube has a Home Page and you will usually see a lot of Click Bait content, to sum it up, only 10-60% percent (depends) content if your not logged in that's actually interesting/funny or simply worth your time.

  • Steemit on the other hand has the Trending Page witch is very similar to YouTube, but unlike YouTube steemit doesn't use cookies in a way to tailor the content to your interests (this is something steemit should implement) and therefore results in all kinds of content being there

So we can't do anything about that?

The truth is, we can but not much, If YouTube can't solve it, how are we supposed to?

Well what can we do?

We can try to influence on how much of that content is actually worth our time and the up vote. Also don't get me wrong, not all content is s#$t, remember content that has the following is considered s#$t and should be down voted:

  • Claiming to own / be the author of someones work

  • Copying an Entire Post from elsewhere and simply Pasting it to Steemit

  • In general content theft and identity theft

These are the OFFICIAL RULES that apparently no one knows about, these where posted by @dan/ @ned/ @steemitblog (I'm not sure who of them actually posted this, if you can find the source please link it below!)

Now some of you may still ask why?

  • Posting content that's already elsewhere Lowers Steemit's Google Rank!

  • Lowering the Google Rank results in lower "quality" of Steemit > Lower Value Of Steem > Lower Value Of Voting power > You get where I am going, It does HARM to ALL of us!

But if you are the author of something or just like to verify yourself the only proper way a must read is This Here. This guide is "fake proof verification" if you really wanna make sure that everyone knows that's you 100%!

Fakers can't fake this method!

What is allowed than?

  • Original articles/posts

  • Opinions on articles

Let me explain the last one, since a lot of people on here seem to misunderstand this rule:

  • You making a post on how much you endorse XYZ Photographer's work and your posting he's images and he's official links where users can find out more(crediting the artist). - This is allowed!

Finding good content due to copy - pasting is becoming harder and harder to find even if you use search for it and has reached a point where it is harder to find good content on steemit than it is on YouTube. This represents a problem, the Trending page we can't influence much and It's not that bad, but what we can influence is content that is unique and good and worth the Up Vote. But how to know if a post is stolen? @cheetah , to my knowledge he is the only "Legit" Bot, that will help find Copy - Pasted content, look out for him in comments section and check he's comment, if he's right Up Vote him so that the author can't vote him down therefore hide him in the comments and hide the fact that he copied the post from elsewhere. You can Support @cheetah : Here

Also what we need to get is, this is not a Get Rich in 24 Hrs Scheme and do whatever it takes to do that! Please Ignore the numbers show below a Post, It's not about the money! This is a social media platform just like any other (Facebook, Reddit, Twitter...), You are here to share opinions and knowledge with each other and socialize. Also I'm not trying here to BASH on people or make people BASH on "simple posts" or posts seen as "unworthy the votes, because there is "better" content that should get the votes" anything on here can get hundreds of votes and that's the beauty of it, It's not about the numbers, It's not about money, It's about being social, having fun, sharing knowledge, insight, experience...Interacting with each-other! But remember posting something that hasn't been posted elsewhere gains Huge Value to steemit, to the author of it and all of us who use steem and steemit!

Sorry for long post but I had the urge to share this.

Have a nice Day and Thanks For Reading!

Thanks Minion. I feel think is important enough to highlight:

"Posting content that's already elsewhere Lowers Steemit's Google Rank!"

It is!
Thank you for pointing that out!

nice post, my mind has shifted away from whats goin on the trending page, steemit is a great platform, so I tailored it to serve my self with the content i am interested in by using my own tag and telling my friends to use that tag, (that tag #craigrant is how I got to this post) since using that tag, the trending page is not any concern to me any more, and specially not having to go to the new page feels great too

Indeed @craig-grant and I thank you for the tag you created, It redirects me too from the trending page to content that's tagged using your tag, also I wanna thank you for introducing me to steem since I joined thanks to your YouTube channel and your awesome videos! Keep them comming and anyone reading this go give some love to this channel: Here and to the man @craig-grant Himself.
Cheers!

It is possible we are "using" the platform in the wrong way, as "consumers" of content - due to the platform being in an early stage with not so much content.

We are trying to "consume" any content that there is available, instead of content that specifically appeals to our interests. When members and content increase significantly, this will change and an interest-based "consumption" will naturally rise. We won't even have time to see things not based on our interests.

The pages are filled with content, since new posts can be made every 5m times approx. 30.000 users means there is an abundance in content.
A solution to this problem would be if every new user had to read the rules and get to know the site better before making that 1st post. Instead they bump on the site, see those trending posts with XXX amounts of $, Sign-Up and try hard to post as much as they can in the hope that one of their 100+ posts will earn them "XXX amounts of $", when they achieve that, than they will actually look in to it how to get that money out and in the process learn what is this whole platform all about and maybe it's rules, but than it will be too late.

This will change, starting tomorrow, as the "weight" algorithm will penalize spammy submissions. I think the threshold for penalizing the user will be >4 posts per day: https://github.com/steemit/steem/issues/176

Yes. This is the chart:

For the original post go Here

can you make a tutorial how to add Pictures, etc to these Steemit blogs?

You can learn that Here and you can use steemimg.com to host your files/upload images to.
Cheers!

Can you tone down the font changes and random animated gifs? Really makes it look like a "low quality" post and hard to read (and take seriously).

Will do!
Thank you for the feedback!

This is a truly amazing post i will feature you

Thanks so much for the too kind words!

this really helped make sense of Steemit and the purpose of this platform for me. I like the "ignore the numbers" part - just write out good content and keep at it full STEEM ahead. ;) Thanks for this awesome tidbit of wisdom. high five

There is work to do but it is an exciting opportunity to learn and become part of the community as it grows.

I think that when the FOLLOW button will work as it works on Youtube, some order will be established.

#'s and users will have their own followers and people will be divided by interests.

Great channels will appear and the frenzy will stop a bit

What do you think? @minion

I think you are right! Therefore a BIG Pro Tip From ME is: The site is still young and people are just starting to discover it, therefore the existing users should start NOW building a reputation as "gaitan The Dev Guy" or "john the chill music guy" "anna the makeup queen".... you know what I mean, since by the time the site grows big you will be known as the guy new people must follow if they are into this or that!

P.S.
I love your idea of adding a signature, I might make me one as well!

Thanks for the idea of becoming known for something, I'm gonna use that!

And you can use this for a signature, it's easy, free, and has great fonts http://www.onlinesignature.in/

Thanks for the link, haven't heard about that site! I have around 2 years of experience in Photoshop so I'ma maybe do my own signature! :)
