The Steemit Daily Dose: @mindhunter Discusses The Reward Pool Replenishment And Asks 'Are We Here To Create And Build A Community Or Are We Here Just To Make Money?'

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

BOTH! ... as per the comments piling up below ;)

Sort:

Making money is the differentiating factor of Steem, plain and simple. It should always be remembered as the primary driver here. If you seek to build a like minded community or amplify a message online, there are better platforms.

If you wish to make money: Yes, it is the differentiating factor. For others it is not. It is to create the best content they possibly can ... then the rewards follow. Then, there others like some of the best critical commenters on here like @baah who produce no content with no rewards. His opinion is completely different. His Steemit mission does not consider differentiating factors. Many threads do indeed weave the Steemit fabric ;)

I'm looking at it from a marketing, brand and growth perspective. The dominant value exchange with Steem is the ability to make money. There may be outliers but those people are actually shooting themselves in the foot by using Steem unless rewards is indeed a part of their motivation.

If someone is solely looking to create the best content they can then they shouldn't be on Steemit. They should be using a superior platform that allows greater freedom than markdown. Steemit is not the best or easiest platform for content creation. You can't even go back and edit your content after a certain point.

If someone is seeking to get a message out then they should be using more popular platforms with integrated sharing and analytics tools. The reach of Steem is far below existing social networks and forums.

I will cede there is a strong secondary niche to Steem's content platform and that is battling censorship. Pizzagate shows that Steem will more than happily store anything no matter how absurd in a decentralized fashion resistant to censorship. I wonder how long that will last if child pornography started showing up though. There are already DMCA takedown functions in the Steem code so we'll see where that ends up in due time.

The blockchain is immutable, but like any council, the witnesses can still remove content like CP if it does appears on Steemit.

There seems to be a contradiction in something that is immutable and yet can still have content removed. If the witnesses can remove it then they can change the blockchain and it's not immutable. If the witnesses can't actually change the blockchain then they can never truly remove anything they can only try and hide it.

There seems to be a contradiction in something that is immutable and yet can still have content removed.

Its a paradoxical statement this:

The blockchain is immutable, but like any council, the witnesses can still remove content like CP if it does appears on Steemit.

It being contradictory has no value because it's still true, therefore it's not merrily contradictory but paradoxical.

How do you consider it to be true?

Can the blockchain be changed or not? This isn't some sort of quantum super state.

Answer this: Can you remove content from the blockchain?
If no then the statement is true, regardless of the fact that content can be removed by a consensus of witnesses. Therefore the blockchain is immutable, meaning that it would require impossible circumstances for you to remove content from it.

This isn't some sort of quantum super state.

Nor is it simply abstraction, but real world application, so even if the witnesses can come to a consensus and remove content, nothing short of that will remove the content, and even then there could still be other witnesses that hold a copy of the database.

There is new technology coming to the blockchain that does away with immutability and does allow block changes. IBM is looking at it I believe?? That is very scary!!

Exactly my thought. This platform is -- imho -- ugly in its design, poorly-functional, buggy, boring (for now, at least), slow and not user-friendly at all. Some users in here jumped at me as soon as I posted my first post and they sounded pretty obsessed with a proof of identity I should give somehow... Come on, folks, this doesn't happen on Instagram or Tumblr, and I get waaaay more community appreciation on those platforms. So, if not for the money, then what for?

ugly in its design, poorly-functional, buggy, boring (for now, at least), slow and not user-friendly at all.
A lot of value judgements, from your opinion.
Lets break that opinion down a smudge:

These are all the same thing, summarized in "not user-friendly at all":
ugly, poorly-functional, boring
These are all the same thing, summarized in "poorly-functional"
buggy and slow.

Do they hold any water though?
What bugs are there right now?
What could you enunciate on "slow and poorly-functional"?
Why is it not user-friendly AT ALL?

Come on, folks, this doesn't happen on Instagram or Tumblr, and I get waaaay more community appreciation on those platforms.

Yeah, I guess you came to realize that you weren't on instagram or tumblr, but a place that offers decentralized resilient content, and transparency. Seeing how those platforms are grandpas compared to steem in terms of age considering the relatively fast pace world of the internetz, it should be obvious that a platform that is vastly different from twiter, facebook, or any other social media in its basic functions and relatively still new (notice that little blue text under the steemit logo?) will not give you the same experience as those behemoths.

So, if not for the money, then what for?
You tell me, it seems you're under the impression that this is more rewarding than the zillion other things which make one money, as I wouldn't call it for the money, chump change maybe, rewarded more than any other social media platform yes, but for the money?. please.

Both why n0t! This is the whole point and motivation. We post elsewhere with no rewards, why not get rewarded and have fun socializing ;)

That was record time for the 'both' answer ... I waiting for that. AGREED! But, a lot of higher reputations have ceased posting during this time - the community must go on during this time ... just say no to tumbleweed!!

@mindhunter I invite you to watch the trending ... who is gaining more and gained much. I do not think there is yet a big difference.

The trending page will always tend to show higher reputations with the higher SPs even if only 20% of them are writing. I've seen reputations of 45 on there all week which don't normally appear there. All is not what it seems @sardrt if you truly look ;)

Personally, I am here to write and create content... and the rewards are certainly nice, but they are "coincidental" to me.

What I'd like to add to what you said is that we can-- in these early stages-- create a high quality content site with a great sense of community... SO we will have something people want to be part of... AS A RESULT of which we may get rewarded. In other words, put your best foot forward and create something of value which will eventually reward you quite well... is the "long term" vs. "short term" investment philosophy.

Balance in all things @denmarkguy - I know you've not changed your modus operandi over the last few days. Neither have I. Good man!

These are speeches that I have heard in all the company paying ... a deja vu .. They have all failed or are open to earn a few people.

So far I believe we are @good content oppose to the competition?
I get well informed on current news, etc. I learn more here than anywhere! Facebook doesn't give me this much knowledge. If we continue going@this rate, we will be heard mainstream in due time ;)

I agree @tradz - a great time to buy Steem too before the marketing announcements next week??

Surely we are not here to pick up a penny to post. On all the rest I do not know. Other company that wanted to change the world, however, have failed.

A community should Steem on regardless if it's a $0.01 post or a $15K post ... the aim of Steemit is for us all to become better bloggers with better quality work. If you want to chase $'s fair enough, but the quality will not show.

A community should Steem on regardless if it's a $0.01 post or a $15K post

Why? Part of the inherent structure is payouts and to brush that off is silly and counter-productive. Shaming those who are trying to earn a few extra $$$ is also counter-productive. The answer to your question is, of course, BOTH.

Steemit should, and hopefully will, settle this issue once they get the payout formula stabilized. Right now it's out of whack, so people are going to hold off posting their better content for better returns.

So go right ahead and do your own thing. Just don't expect everyone to jump on that train with you, because they have other, equally valid, priorities.

Thanks for answering my question @aunt-deb :)) All are equally valid like you say - but some equally valid opinions do whine more than others ;)

Could be. Could be they're hungry. I know I get cranky when I miss a meal. Ah, well, I've got enough extra padding to last me a couple months, so I guess I have no room to talk.

We are in agreement @mindhunter. Steemit is the most advanced blockchain technology at this time.
And has and is developing an amazing social platform and community. I came to Steemit to share my valued quality content. I, also believe financial rewards result from our intent to produce the best we are able to. Steem on.

Thanks @bilbop! This post has certainly touched nerves in the comment section!!

A good and though provoking post @mindhunter. The interesting discussion in the comments show how wise it was to change the comment nesting limits in the hardfork. Should make for a lot more interaction in the future. I’ve only been active on Steemit for a few weeks now but I’m finding the thrill of having people read and comment on my posts is very addictive. Yes the rewards are great and certainly do single out Steemit from other social platforms but they are secondary to me. If I can build my followers and provide interesting and informative content then I will be more than happy.

MASS NESTAGE going on here today!! It's been a bun fight alright! I've really enjoyed Steemit today! #steemsunday

Does make things dramatic doesn't it!

Out, out, brief candle!
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Macbeth - rather heavy for this time of night......

I think it was the sheer heaviness of comments above it that did it ;)
