Making money is the differentiating factor of Steem, plain and simple. It should always be remembered as the primary driver here. If you seek to build a like minded community or amplify a message online, there are better platforms.
If you wish to make money: Yes, it is the differentiating factor. For others it is not. It is to create the best content they possibly can ... then the rewards follow. Then, there others like some of the best critical commenters on here like @baah who produce no content with no rewards. His opinion is completely different. His Steemit mission does not consider differentiating factors. Many threads do indeed weave the Steemit fabric ;)
I'm looking at it from a marketing, brand and growth perspective. The dominant value exchange with Steem is the ability to make money. There may be outliers but those people are actually shooting themselves in the foot by using Steem unless rewards is indeed a part of their motivation.
If someone is solely looking to create the best content they can then they shouldn't be on Steemit. They should be using a superior platform that allows greater freedom than markdown. Steemit is not the best or easiest platform for content creation. You can't even go back and edit your content after a certain point.
If someone is seeking to get a message out then they should be using more popular platforms with integrated sharing and analytics tools. The reach of Steem is far below existing social networks and forums.
I will cede there is a strong secondary niche to Steem's content platform and that is battling censorship. Pizzagate shows that Steem will more than happily store anything no matter how absurd in a decentralized fashion resistant to censorship. I wonder how long that will last if child pornography started showing up though. There are already DMCA takedown functions in the Steem code so we'll see where that ends up in due time.
The blockchain is immutable, but like any council, the witnesses can still remove content like CP if it does appears on Steemit.
There seems to be a contradiction in something that is immutable and yet can still have content removed. If the witnesses can remove it then they can change the blockchain and it's not immutable. If the witnesses can't actually change the blockchain then they can never truly remove anything they can only try and hide it.
Its a paradoxical statement this:
It being contradictory has no value because it's still true, therefore it's not merrily contradictory but paradoxical.
How do you consider it to be true?
Can the blockchain be changed or not? This isn't some sort of quantum super state.
Answer this: Can you remove content from the blockchain?
If no then the statement is true, regardless of the fact that content can be removed by a consensus of witnesses. Therefore the blockchain is immutable, meaning that it would require impossible circumstances for you to remove content from it.
Nor is it simply abstraction, but real world application, so even if the witnesses can come to a consensus and remove content, nothing short of that will remove the content, and even then there could still be other witnesses that hold a copy of the database.

Without complete knowledge of the inner workings I will hazard saying yes from what I understand. I believe that a consensus of the top 20 witnesses could push through an altered blockchain but I could be wrong.
Let's assume they can for argument's sake. That would mean that the blockchain isn't immutable since it can be changed in that scenario. This relies on the blockchain being defined as the current live consensus version.
There is new technology coming to the blockchain that does away with immutability and does allow block changes. IBM is looking at it I believe?? That is very scary!!
Exactly my thought. This platform is -- imho -- ugly in its design, poorly-functional, buggy, boring (for now, at least), slow and not user-friendly at all. Some users in here jumped at me as soon as I posted my first post and they sounded pretty obsessed with a proof of identity I should give somehow... Come on, folks, this doesn't happen on Instagram or Tumblr, and I get waaaay more community appreciation on those platforms. So, if not for the money, then what for?

Yeah, I guess you came to realize that you weren't on instagram or tumblr, but a place that offers decentralized resilient content, and transparency. Seeing how those platforms are grandpas compared to steem in terms of age considering the relatively fast pace world of the internetz, it should be obvious that a platform that is vastly different from twiter, facebook, or any other social media in its basic functions and relatively still new (notice that little blue text under the steemit logo?) will not give you the same experience as those behemoths.
