The Case Against Unmonitored, Automated Voting

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

One erotic story.
Multiple poems (I'm not really a fan of poems).
One plagiarized recipe.
A story that was mostly on tomatoes. Seriously, tomatoes. I've never liked tomatoes.
Some tattoo art that was... okay? Or... maybe not. Let's just say I wasn't a fan.
A random YouTube video about ISIS recruits and another about turkish girls... I tired to watch one of them. Couldn't get through it.
Some pornographic art (at least it had the nsfw tag by the time I saw it).
A drunken binge story.
A post about different kinds of poop. Yep. I voted for poop.

Early on, I got an invite to Streemian and was interested in trying out the curation trail functionality. The basic idea is, you find a Steemit user you trust and when they vote, you also automatically vote for the same thing. Seems simple, right? For stuff like the @robinhoodwhale, it makes a lot of sense. Let's spread around the new content rewards. What's not to like?

Well, over the past few days, I had Streemian running on a few accounts I think have been doing a great job curating valuable content. Soon my voting strength starting going down, and I figured I should pull back a bit. As I was deciding who to keep following, I happened to notice a vote (of mine) for an erotic story. That got me thinking, what else have "I" been voting for?

Whoa! That's a lot of posts. Some of these I voted for manually, most of them I did not. So tonight, I decided to skim through each one of them. Yep. each. and. every. one. of. them. It took a long time and as I mentioned above, I found a surprising number of posts I never would have voted for on my own.

Most of them were great. I really enjoyed reading through them and seeing what the community valued and what was voted on, but not really rewarded. I was also surprised to see how many posts... just weren't my style. Nothing against them, they just weren't me, ya know?

I'm torn here, because I like the idea of spreading the Steem Power around, but I also think about the blockchain as being a permanent record of my actions. Forever.

What if I were a whale voting for plagiarized content? People would be authoring posts about me and how terrible the equilibrium of power is on Steemit, how the voting rewards are broken, how the whales are out of control, etc, etc. As it stands, my little vote is only worth a handful of pennies, but it's still something real to me because I've worked hard to earn my Steem Power. Again, most of the posts listed above were great. Even the ones I wouldn't have voted for mostly come down to a matter of opinion and personal preference.

If automated voting were widespread, would an individual vote even mean anything? Does it mean anything now?

I want to believe it does. I also want to believe my "voting record" is an indication of my personality and my values (at least, my values at this moment, as we're all changing over time). I want to be significant. If my vote is lumped in with a bunch of other votes which were not directly planned by their Steem Power owners, what are we left with? Where's the "price discovery" in determining the real value of a vote?

I don't have answers, just questions. For now, I'm not going to follow any voting curation user or team unless I make the effort to track it in real time and correct any votes that don't directly fit my own personality. I enjoyed the higher-than-normal curation rewards, but are a few extra bucks a day worth even the potential chance of a permanent vote for something I don't personally think is worth voting on?

What do you think?

Sort:

I really enjoyed the read. You made me laugh! 😄
But when thinking about...

...the blockchain as being a permanent record of my actions. Forever.

...it's not funny at all.

I know and admit that automation (no matter of which kind) may be tempting, especially if you may earn with it few extra bucks.
On the other hand, I'm always kinda suspicious when bots are in question with that strange feeling they would drag me into some hidden trap, what in most cases it's true (from my point of view).
Therefore, in general, I'm against it and avoiding it.

But above all, I would like to highlight that I like real human interaction. That's something that excites me way more than any bot's vote no matter how much money it could bring me.
At the end of the day, it's a battle between quality and quantity.
In the long run, I believe quality would always win the award although it's usually a long road to go. 😉😊

But above all, I would like to highlight that I like real human interaction. That's something that excites me way more than any bot's vote no matter how much money it could bring me.

Very well said.

I too think quality will win... if the platform is to survive and prosper at all among competition from other platforms.

Exactly the same thinking here! 😉 😊

I also want to believe my "voting record" is an indication of my personality and my values

If you want it to be this, then stop using automated voting. It is your choice.

The other thing is, maybe you are following the wrong trails. I can think of a few voters where I would probably agree with a high percentage of their voting decisions. Others I certainly would not. Choosing trails or other automated voting does not mean taking your own opinion or judgment out of the matter entirely, it means apply it at a different level.

Thanks @smooth. Well said, as always.

it means apply it at a different level.

Yes, definitely. That's why I said this:

For now, I'm not going to follow any voting curation user or team unless I make the effort to track it in real time and correct any votes that don't directly fit my own personality.

If I care about my voting record (and, I think this experiment showed me I do), then I need to apply myself differently. One solution I was thinking about today was to keep steemtstats running and notice when "I" vote on something and then take a moment to go check it out and decide if that vote should stay.

I know you've done very well building a team of very good curators, so I appreciate what you say concerning finding the right trail. When I'm trailing great content, it's actually really fun! I'll probably turn it on again at some point, but it won't be for days on end without checking what's being voted on. 24 hours is a long time to correct something before it goes on the permanent record. :)

I added this to my latest post:-

I should emphasise this: I think Curie (or any other manual curation / cognitive mining groups) are necessary to go through contents, comprehending them, and sometimes reaching out. More often than not, rather important posts are left unchecked in the wild. The best that we can do is to help others connect the dots. Diligent curators that actively screen the playing field would know better than casual curators.

Also, the winner-takes-all effect can be mitigated, once the winners themselves find value in contributing to curation works. You will find this to be indicated as X in my organisational chart earlier. This is what Google calls moonshot, indicative of Google X. It could also be likened as social moonshots. And it could represent celebrities and winners.

I guess it's pretty important to build (or participate) in your own curation groups if you want some voting to go on even if you're not around to vote on stuff. The bigger curation groups like @curie and @robinhoodwhale are shooting for diversity of content, pretty much wholesale and with "errors" (admittedly a tiny percentage of posts really shouldn't have gone through). And I'm sure there'll be pockets of more specialised content curators like @steemstem which are going for science+tech posts.

I don't have the answers to your questions too.. it's like lending a bunch of people a mask with your face on it.. but you keep appearing in places that you potentially don't want to be seen it lol.. but I think what's more pressing is the quote I've attached here from my latest post. Maybe if you're following voting trails, go and interact with the ones of your liking.. I think that's the best any supporter can do :). There are actually many accounts which are clueless about the potentials of Steemit..

PS: Upon writing this, I'm gonna add another new line in that post .. thanks for asking the important questions @lukestokes :)

Thanks Kevin.

it's like lending a bunch of people a mask with your face on it.. but you keep appearing in places that you potentially don't want to be seen it lol..

Hah! That's a great analogy. I love it.

I think you're right about the tiny percentage of errors though. It really isn't all that many compared to the genuinely good content which I'm happy to know I contributed to rewards-wise in some small way, even when I wasn't around to vote manually or didn't create the time to do so.

I guess it depends if you have the time for manual curation. It has been suggested many times that we all need to use our votes to help the community grow.

I reckon that means the entire community, not just the part we really enjoy lol.. Surely some others enjoy that content or it would not get votes, or would it.

Looking at Steemwhales we can see who the leaders are in curation rewards, and it pretty much looks like they vote on everything. Do they deem everything worthy or are they going for the reward ?

I dunno but I like Streemian and think it serves a valuable function here.

I do prefer to curate manually most of the time but I am an operator on Streemian and have a few accounts following me. But I doubt they agree with my every vote, likely they just don't have the time for manual curation..

I also created a curator account there and I have 4 followers, I think, the last time I checked. Again, I don't have answers here, just questions and lots of mixed feelings. If I do a good job of curation and I really do value the posts I vote on, why wouldn't I want more Steem Power behind each of my votes as represented by those you are following me and voting on my trail? At the same time, is the arrogant to think I could possibly have a good enough opinion on the value of content to decide for others what should be rewarded?

I dunno.

Maybe I'm over-thinking it. Maybe curation is good because, as I learned going through the list of posts above, most of it is great content. Maybe we should be okay with a little bit of junk getting in here or there if the net result is a bunch of people got rewarded (even if only a few pennies) by my Steem Power who otherwise wouldn't have. Time is certainly valuable and when my voting power is sitting at 100% it sometimes feels as if I'm letting the community down. If I had more Steem Power, I'd feel even more of a burden to be voting all the time.

"Time is certainly valuable and when my voting power is sitting at 100% it sometimes feels as if I'm letting the community down. If I had more Steem Power, I'd feel even more of a burden to be voting all the time."

That's how I see it for sure, I think too many people large and small are not utilizing their voting power, and the entire community suffers from that.. Of course we do have to sleep...

So a little bad content gets in, I think it's good that you check where your votes are being places as you did tonight. Adjust who you are following as needed...

It's all beta after all :)

I think too many people large and small are not utilizing their voting power, and the entire community suffers from that

@dantheman had a hard fork proposal to fix this by changing vote weights and how long it takes to recharge them but the community went nuts and complained about it. I think he's right more often then not, and he just has to wait for other people to catch up with his thinking. He seems like a genius to me, but I'm thankful he also seems open to the community and adjusts his plans accordingly.

Beta indeed. :)

Personally, I would feel very uncomfortable in voting for a post I have not read. I would therefore prefer to be selfish and vote less. Which does not prevent me from following a couple of users and the way they vote, and to vote as well if I feel so. In short, I 100% agree with your conclusions.

And one should be agnostic of money when voting. Content only should matter. But that's unfortunately only true in the Teletubbies world...

As for being money agnostic, you may enjoy reading about a 24-hour test I did on that here by hiding the $$$. It was really interesting. I may do that again with the price of Steem dropping just to feel better about it all. Heheh. :)

I think this would not change at all the way I vote ;) But maybe I will test it in the future!

I wouldn't just follow someones votes blindly, but to have a list of a dozen trusted curators and vote after 3-4 of them have voted for the same post seem to be ok for me.
Anyway, if whales want the community to grow they have no choice but to stop to be control freaks, doing all the upvotes manually. It might work for 5000 accounts, but not 500 000. It's like as if the President of the Bank would want to decide personally that Alise will get a credit for a new car, because she is nice looking, and Bob will not, because of poor grammar.

Oh, I like that idea. "These 5 people vote the way I do. If 2 or more vote on something, give it my vote as well." The weakness there (from a game theory perspective) is when everyone the other accounts are just doing follow voting so they vote when one account votes and then your accounts sees the 2 or more votes it wants to see.

The bank analogy loses me a bit because "poor grammer" on a social media platform that is trying to be like Medium as far as high quality, long-form content is really important to avoid promoting. Same might be said for nice looking, but from the opposite angle. I don't think the whales are control freaks, but I do see how much the community bashes on them if they vote for something which others (subjectively) don't think has value. People get mad either way. "What did they vote on that trash!" or "Why can't they loosen up and vote for more diverse content, even stuff they don't personally love?"

If Steemit is not just some blogging platform, but rather a trojan horse for a new economic system based on SBD, as it was specified here https://steemit.com/steem/@dan/steemit-s-evil-plan-for-cryptocurrency-world-domination, then
I'm afraid we have to go along with Bob's poor grammar and questionable taste as long as he is willing to accept SBD in bar he is running )

Oh, for sure, but in that case we'd be upvoting his bar selection we can purchase, not his grammar. :)

And yes, I love that post and think about it / reference it often. It's one of the main reasons I think Steemit will be such a game-changer, introducing cryptocurrency to new people like @corinnestokes (which I blogged about before).

I don't think bot voting , bot curation and bot content improves the Steemit ecosystem for the long term. I'm all for tools like Steemb that help you clearly see what has happened but not a bot that will post for you.

Yeah, being able to follow what's going on in real time is pretty cool.

I am a 100% believer in automation. My curation automation is on a much smaller scale but I see why yours was a little overwhelming.

As with any automation we have to go in and tweak it occasionally. The problem lies with the other users. Some will try to take advantage as we found out on the @Steemit Twitter account last week. A few spammers figure out that they could get the account to Tweet them if they used specific categories but since I was just testing ans watching like a hawk I was able to stop them before they made a mess of things.

Have fun and automate whatever you can Luke. It makes life so much more enjoyable.

I love automation, for sure, but there are certain things we still crave as human beings. We want real human relationships and connections and when "social" is automated it can become cold and sterile. Maybe someday we could all have our own personal AI systems which would accurately automate "us", but I don't think we're there yet. I still see voting as a social activity, but it's much less social that commenting, for sure.
