Making it serious. Steemit is a platform for digital content monetization, so SP should sponsor your reading interests.
The grand design
You can do whatever you want with your upvotes, even if you're not curating things you are incredibly interested in reading. But that is extremely cost efficient. Think about it, then review your agenda.
Sponsoring specific authors with your upvote - and (almost) only them - will make people strive to produce high quality content you want to read. Not only steemit will thrive with excellent reading material, but more writers will become interested in the platform, spreading the word and raising public interest in STEEM.
This is also good for your leisure. It can cure your crave for political articles, or maybe nature, games and even... memes. Every time you browse through your feed, it will be filled with things you actually want to read, instead of the big mess of people you don't really follow.
All you have to do is find a few people who are really good at what you like and concentrate your upvotes on them. You can even get them to write about that niche news they didn't mention yet. This praises both creators and your investment as a whole.

Well, lately people barely vote or read posts at all if I am right. I realized that no matter the content of your posts, you end up with nothing to gain. It's sad how the members of this platform relate. I think it's helpful selling your votes than.....
I just started to curate #arkecosystem and support it with my SP. It is not much but if you contribute you will get a little. Maybe I am too utopian ...
You can't be "too utopian", but you shouldn't be irrealistic. like you said, it is not much, but everything helps. But uh, are you sure you got the tag right? The interest could be spread easily as more high profile content creators move from traditional centralized social platform that censor and limit content to more open and uncensored places like #Steemit. The reality that many would get interested if the community remains active and continues to grow with engagement.
That can only happen if the existing community makes it happen.

I need to clean up the people I follow. I like some articles but at times too many things just seem repetitive and I do get bored.
I know where you're coming from. I wish there was a tool to unfollow everyone but the people you tick. But by far and wide following the resteem bots is the biggest issue. They just give you way too much stuff.
