Income on Steemit is generated by "investment" (the more Steem you have, the more you earn) and by "work" (earning Steem by contributing content that adds value). Already having invested my savings in Steem, I'm now working by uploading unique valuable content to the blockchain. My first goal is to increase my average weekly income to 50 USD.
Calculating weekly income

I learned recently that it currently takes 5000 Steem to make a "dolphin". I guess that makes my team roughly one quarter of a dolphin - kinda cool.
It was an above-average week for payouts, thanks to some great posts like this.
Also this week, I cleaned out some USD crumbs in my old PayPal account, converting them through a friend into about 15 Steem, which I promptly powered up! I didn't include it in the above data, since I'll be donating most of it to the Mission:Agua-Possible project, over the next couple weeks.
Turns out it was my 8th best week on record, so thank you to anyone who upvoted my posts and my team members' posts recently. Also, thanks to @novacadian who is helping @SativaZeee (and others) with some delegated Steem Power.
I notice I must have passed some threshold of SP, because now I'm getting a trickle of interest on my 972 total. It's only .001 every few minutes, but it never stops, and it's compounding, so eventually that has to start making a small difference.
Even though reputation is just a number, I like to celebrate the little things when there's not much else to be happy about! My team is now at rep 40, 43, 44, 50, 53, and 56! Good job, everybody. Also, we may be picking up a new team member soon, which will add a bit more Steem to our total, and a bit more value to our team voting strategy.
All these factors add up to making the 98% crash in Steem price this year a bit more tolerable. We're managing to get through, for the most part, and once we survive this crypto winter, we'll thrive and rebuild once again.

Man, I wish I knew what a "dolphin" (in Steemit terms) is. Or "one quarter of a dolphin". Sounds tasty. :)
Basically, it means even less than reputation does. It's just an arbitrary amount of Steem Power (currently 5000). Nothing much exciting actually happens, although I think you get a couple tools for managing your account that don't appear until then. At 500 (minnow) there was a slider bar that appeared for me. Instead of always blowing a full upvote every time I vote on something, I can select anywhere between 1% and 100% of it. This lets me split up my upvoting across dozens of posts and comments, rather than just 10 or so a day for 'plankton' like you.
(Yeah it's rather childish and pointless... a Steemit custom I guess!)
I think I'm starting to pick up what you're putting down. It's a derivative of the "whale" idea --someone who controls a huge number of coins. The more you have the more influence you have. I guess I knew that, I'm just ignorant of the terminology and how it works in practice on the platform.
Hahah, right! I should have mentioned the whale thing. Yeah, just slang for 4ish levels of investment in the platform.
