How the new PROMOTE feature works

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Everyone has probably noticed the latest update and has probably even read a few posts on the do's and dont's of the new PROMOTE feature. It's the little button in the bottom right hand corner of all your posts. I think this new feature is great! It gives content developers the opportunity to make the content they worked hard on more visible. Sure as the feature becomes more widely used, it will be "just another list" as some people argued, however for those who really feel their content is valuable - they can spend their SBD to make sure their content is seen.

How does it work though?

I am definitely an expert, but I have been playing around with the feature on some of my new content to test it out.

I have taken some of my posts and found the following:

  1. SBD spent promotes your post - simple as that. The nuance here is that everyone who uses this feature also has their post promoted, so on the main page, where all content is listed, it's as if you made a new post - your content will still just as quickly disappear as more posts are made and people promote their own post.

The benefit will be better noticed in the categories that you tag your post with. Ex. My post below has a "bitcoin" tag, so in the bitcoin section, my PROMOTE has more pull since their are less posts about "bitcoin" and because it's specifically categorized. This means more visibility to people who enjoy reading content about a specific category.

  2. The amount of SBD determines how high in the list your post is promoted. The more SBD you use to promote your post, the higher in the list your post is displayed. If your post is something you really want to showcase because you believe in it's value, you can pay more SBD for it to be listed higher in the PROMOTED list. In the example below and as a test, I promoted 2 of my posts, paying a bit more SBD to promote one post then the other and it made a difference where the post was displayed on the list. This is my assumption of how it works - the more you pay, the higher your content is listed.

  3. Promoting your old content - This gives you a brief opportunity to showcase your older content which may already be completely archived already due to the number of new posts per day. The catch to this - and I learned it the hard way - is that once someone comments or upvotes an old post that has already gotten it's first payout, the post is removed from the PROMOTED section. This was also mentioned by @jesta and other in his post PSA - Don't use the "Promote Post" feature on a post that's already paid out once. Only use it for new posts. Hopefully this will get fixed soon so that a promoted post remains longer.

In the end, I love the new feature. For now it allows us minnows and new content creators to showcase some of the posts we have worked hard on creating. Steemit continues to get better and better and as a community our suggestions will only make the platform greater. Thanks to the Devs as well for continuing to listen to our feedback and suggestions to make this a better platform overall. Keep up the good work everyone!

I hope you enjoyed reading

hi @cloh76, do you know if the promoting old post bug is fixed or not ?

As a new user I really appreciate posts like these, thanks so much!
PS. Did u mean to say "Definitely I am not an expert"? because the phrasing sounds a little weird ._.

Does anybody know what the minimum is? is it 1.00 sbd? I'm sitting on doing a posting for my little game shop, but i want to be able to promote it so i am saving my sbd until i have 1.00 and see for myself what it will do. (yes i am still less then 30 days on steemit.)

Thank you. i just powered up, so it will have to wait. i could not past up raising my vests. Good to know though.

Great explanation on promoting in steemit Thank You!

if you dont want the steem to be burned through promoting you can powerup the poster directly.

I wonder if the Boost payment goes out as part of the curator payout since I don't see that in the breakdown of payments anymore

it depends mainly on the amount of SBD i guess nethertheless you promote your post or you powerup someone. Promoting belongs to the author. If you're a generous steemian than you must fine the great content of the author first.

If you're a minnow who needs support and you have just small amounts of SBD than promoting has little impact because of the now already huge community with many promoted content with much higher SBD i guess. I tried that with 1 SBD with and haven't seen my article in the promoted section. I'm curious, how much SBD is necessary to even show up on the first page for promoted posts? The question is if it's economic decision to promote your posts. Currently i don't experienced the advantages of promoting.

Who does promoting frequently?

I'm wondering the same. @onetin84 By any chance did you find out how much SDB is necessary to show up on the first page?

Just a note about burning Steem by promoting. When you eat apples, bananas, and any fruit there is often a lot you throw away.

Why is this important?

Money is inflationary, the more we have, the less we actually have as there is the quest to earn more and more humans and more money, and more debt than money. What this means is that if you keep cash in your pocket, all those cents and pennies over years it becomes so devalued that after 10-20 years it is worth almost nothing. That $100 private Benjamin may only be actually in spending power of only $8 10-20 years later.

With crypto currencies, the aim is deflationary - which means the value grows which is opposite to the inflationary model. The aim as always is a limited supply. Where there is an unlimited supply it holds no value. To reach that there has to be less in the system.

By throwing the coins into thin air, you actually increase the value or you could have something that has no value - however much you want to peg it to the USD!

Hence why throwing into thin air, and limited promotion time makes for fresh content an and ecosystem where Steem is worth more over time.

Nice post @cloh76

Create a great day,
@kozan

Hope it produces more than you paid to promote it @ldauch

Create a great day,
@kozan

No worries about that. I spent 10sbd so far and im not expecting much

Sorry for necroposting, I'm just curious if you used it again and got better results?

You got 3.87 SBD back.
Less 25% curation fees= 10.40 half to SP half to SBD... too much work for 40 cents...

You may be missing the point of "Promotion" as it applies to minnows looking for exposure. As everyone knows, noobs have a difficult time getting recognized and this is a way to pay it forward, so to speak. I used this feature once, not for immediate gains, but as an investment into the future. If you spend 1 SBD and pick up 10 followers, to me that is worth the price. Just my opinion.

very interesting ;-)

Thank you for the explanation! This clears up a lot for me!

Informative and definitely cleared it up for me mate. Ta. You got my vote and resteem without a doubt. :)

Thanks for you information!
