Steemit Needs: Please comment with your ideas to improve Steemit!! E. 2
Hi again everyone! I am keeping my word to keep the series going! It's after the big changes, the Steem Powering down en masse, some bugs and the Hard Fork,
I would like you to comment with your visual aids or written ideas of what you think Steemit can use to improve the Community for features and why.
It's OK to gather new ideas but if the same issues pop up, that is great too, because it will send the message that something is more important to the developers and Steemit Elders. My goal is again - use this blog post as a resource to help the dev's and the community members.
I was trying to pick good tags...... I decided to use the TIL tag -- hoping someone either looking FOR help on learning something -- or someone looking TO help on these things would comment! I thought about that one for a couple mins.
If you want to tag people or share it so others can comment and contribute also, that is great. I have my own ideas and see a lot of people talking about it, but as someone who is NOT - I REPEAT NOT! tech savvy like many of you, and who is newer to the Blockchain and Crypto stuff, I know my role is limited to give ideas, I am just a Minnow LOL.
But I have been an activist for years, I am used to building community and gathering info and trying to help so I guess you can blame the activist side of me for this idea which I think is a good one -- an INTENTIONAL POST on the idea, to gather stuff in one place and be easily searchable and findable for all the IT types and developers etc.
Just my way of trying to contribute. I did not even know for sure what tags to use in this post, and I actually spent 5 mins looking and researching the best ones to try and use, before I posted this LOL. I will edit the tags ASAP if you give me better ones to use!!
If we can get some good feedback going, we can use these ideas, all in one place and people can refer back to them. That's why E.1 / E.2 was in the title, I am hopeful it is helpful as a resource.

My top three right now are:
@barrydutton, like you I am not tech savvy, however I have become extremely interested in how steemit operates in all of its multi-faceted and somewhat complicated glory. @timcliff do you think item #3 would be a way to address the drop in user interaction, or is there some way in which it can be formatted to do so? I've never upvoted a post that I didn't actually open and read, and rarely do I vote and not comment, I think it's extremely important for the content creator to get feedback. Someone recently suggested placing higher curation rewards on comments as a potential solution.
Of course you are going to find an easier way to make awesome posts just as I am finally figuring out markdown, haha!
Great job in trying to deal with the NSFW issue. While I have chosen at this point to keep my own blog clean, I enjoy off-color entertainment, and so do many others including many like me who also keep their personal blogs family friendly (merej99 among them ;) I strongly believe in freedom of expression and frown on censorship. I have several novels that contains strong content that I might want to put on here down the line and I'd like to feel comfortable doing so. I would also want to warn people away who might be offended by it without chasing them from my blog completely since I will continue to post plenty of material that is perfectly safe for work.
And two things that have bothered me from the beginning--the inability to comment on old posts and the utter lack of incentive to vote on them, in fact to vote on anything over 24 hours old unless you are one of the handful of people that constantly trend.
I voted for you just now, I've been meaning to do it as you seem to be one of the most actively involved witnesses in the community and I really appreciate that! If you have any recommendations for other witnesses that I can look into I'd also appreciate it. It's a long list and time can be somewhat limited.

Oh you are absolutely right, they are definitely valuable. It helps to know people are voicing their thoughts and especially that those like @timcliff are listening. And I know I learn from them :)
I love this idea. As Steemit grows, allocating voting power should be more diverse. Trails are good for curation rewards, but it centralizes VP on a few posts. New users will stop using Steemit if they don't see their efforts are valued here. Blockchain is not a selling point for many.

Tim, you might look into why Steemit provides for the ability to hotlink, even when the hosting sites have put in place code to block doing so. Pixabay states clearly that it's not allowed. Many other sites do as well.
Here's a good example:
Shows up nicely, doesn't it? Right click on it and choose to show it in another tab (or copy the link and open it in another tab). Still looks good, right? Now strip out the
https://img1.steemit.com/0x0/(leavinghttp://www.smoothieweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/owl-made-from-fruit-496x479.jpg)and you'll see that hotlinking this image is prohibited. I know that folks are encouraged to use hosting services, such as steemimg, but right now Steemit is unknowingly hotlinking illegally.If you look at the link in your post, it is actually:
https://img1.steemit.com/0x0/http://www.smoothieweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/owl-made-from-fruit-496x479.jpgSteemit is actually not hot-linking to the smoothieweb URL. When you first create your / comment, it hotlinks once to pull the image into Steemit's local image server, and then after that it points to the image that is stored locally on the Steemit server.
So Steemit is hosting it?
That's interesting. In the RSS feeds from Streemian, the Steemit portion of the url is removed, so I thought it was hotlinking. It results in the RSS feed hotlinking.

Thanks. Yeah, that might not matter, and I haven't tried. The RSS feed doesn't include them though. I asked @xeroc if he had any ideas. We'll see.

What are you trying to make work / do?
Using Stremian's RSS feed to move articles to a WP site. I have Markdown JP on it to help convert the Markdown, but the images just aren't working well. Part of it is because of the hotlinking issue. But there's something else too (some images work, others don't, and I can't find consistency to the problem).
Anyway, if I could get the hotlink issue taken care of, it'd be a great step in the right direction. You just showed me part of the problem.... it's a great step. :)
Wlcm. Steemit is hosting the images if you are viewing it through Steemit.com. If you view through a non-Steemit website, it will pull the raw text from the blockchain. In those cases, technically those sites are hotlinking. That is not Steemit's job to prevent though :)
Yeah, I get it. Now trying to figure out how to make it work. Hrmmm.... Any ideas?

Steemit needs a help section like a giant public chat were newbie can go and ask for questions and directions.
When new users create a post just to ask a question or comment on a post ,their question is very often completely ignored so we need a dedicated section for questions.
There is the SteemPrentice channel in Steemit chat for this.
So many people love and notice that you are so involved Tim, this post is just the latest example, -- like i said, that is one of the biggest reasons I voted for you as a witness plus you are very polite to people LOL

One if my biggies is being able to see notifications for when you are mentioned in a comment. Currently on eSteem you can get notifications for this but you can't then click that to go to the post or comment in question. It means you can miss mentions and the like

More power to the user. This is already our big selling point. "Nobody decides what you see or post except you."
Take it a step further and let posters set a minimum rep and/or sp balance to permit commenting on that post.
Most would leave it at the default 25 rep, but movie stars and rock idols would probably set it much higher, to minimise trolling.
This puts the contributor more firmly in the drivers seat, and incentivises users to power up and safeguard their rep.
A similar slider could be used for being notified when tagged in somebody's post.
If Ned mentions me, I want to get a notification. If I mention him, he probably doesn't want to see it.
