Keep Your Following List Clean! Some Criteria To Consider

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

I am seriously thinking on doing some cleaning up on my following list since I stumbled upon some porn videos while reading my feed few days ago. I blamed it all to my carelessness, I should have checked before adding anyone to my list of following. I am very supportive of newbies and have only good intentions of giving them a chance to building their followers list. However, the set back that I got from this method was, I was added by some unwanted users like those who posted porn contents and those weird and ghost users. If you wish to know who are considered as ghost or weird users, please continue to read till the end.

How to Block Someone in Steemit?

Do you wish to know how to block unwanted users from appearing in your feed? You can read it here How To Block Someone in Steemit?

True Followers vs Fake Followers

Also, I have stumbled upon some of my followings who unfollow me the moment I followed them. These users have been added to my Blacklist register. You can read it here A Test Of Trust

Criteria to differs Good vs Unwanted Users

And so in doing this exercise on my following list of users, I set some criteria that deserve the action to be removed from my following list as follows:

1. Posting or reblogging Porn Contents

Posting of Pornographic Contents - I found 9 users so far. As of now, I am only half way checking my following list... WHAT? OMG... how careless am I? And look at the tag that was used... Photography!!!! That's really a bad news because I always like to watch all nice photos using that tag... sigh.

Filtering is very important okay. These type of posts are tagged as NSFW (Not Safe For Work).

2. Lack of Quality

For example posting some photos without anything else written about it or just 5 to 10 words-sentences.

3. Blacklisted for Plagiarism

Continuously being blacklisted for plagiarism by the policing bots.

4. Don't Have Own Contents, only reblogging other people's articles

Not posting own contents but their page full of reblogging contents of others.

5. Lack of originality, a copy and paste articles from Google

A lazy work it seems, only copy and paste from Google without any efforts.

6. Lack of originality, posting Youtube videos made by others

Another lazy work of posting all videos from Youtube that were made by others.

7. Dormant or Inactive Users

These users have abandoned their accounts for months, example shown below.

8. RP (Reputation Score) Below 25

Just to ensure that the list is filled by users that did not get flag by some whales or policing bots.

9. Ghost Users

An example below shown a user who never blog but have many followers and followings.

8. Weird Users

An example below shown a user who only have these messages on their page. I found it very weird.

I hope you learn something new today and perhaps considering of doing some cleaning up yourself.

Very well presented. I testify to nearly all of them, but what catches my eye in your list here is

Also, I have stumbled upon some of my followings who unfollow me the moment I followed them

I have one who persistently follows today, and then unfollows tomorrow. Of course i have understood the irony of it. The person, since i am not following back, is counting on the mathematical probability that the more he/she pops up as my follower, the more the likelihood, i will follow back. How wrong.

To your list let me add these lot, to whom you have already alluded, but from a different perspective, namely dormant/inactive followers.

What is the value of a follower who never even comments on your work? I have found that for several people, upvotes and comments come from non-followers compared to so-called followers.

As such, these only serve cosmetic purposes.

That said, i am wondering, is there a way, of stop myself from being followed by some accounts? It'd be interesting to control not just whom i follow, but who follows me! lol.

Is there a way?

@mirrors - Perhaps the best philosophy to have is - Who I follow is my business and who follows me is their business... Besides it's so bad having many followers. :)

I couldn't agree more.

Hi @mirrors, thanks for enlightening us... that's a very insightful perspective and I appreciate very much. I agree that some of the upvotes that we get actually came from the non-followers. The followers are like cosmetic, you got it spot on.

Is there a way?

On this question, I second what @rlt47 said, it's your choice and your business. So do make a wise choice.

True. Thanks. And you too, stay blessed.

And before i go, i just looked up your profile. You are an author, and have written something on a similar subject as this in question. I am reading through it in a jiffy.

I am also an author, or at least, i like to call myself one. So I am following you, my choice! lol...

Happy steeming too @ainie.kashif

Lol okay will be following you back... thanks for the follow, will drop by your page to check it out, take care :)

The pleasure is mine. Thanks

Pruning your following list is a good strategy for steemit.

I've decided to apply Pareto's principle to steemit. I'm focusing my efforts on the individuals who provide the most value to me, in terms of quality content, comments and upvotes.

PS I will copy this comment to HHG 6

Hi @jacksondavies, I second your way... that Pareto's principle would be the best to deal with this environment. In pruning my following list, I learned that most of them didn't actually provide any value. Perhaps 30% of the list of mine I shall say. The rest are either dormant, ghost or weird users.

Keep pruning your list.
From my experience in writing haikus everyday, I've learnt the principle of quality over quantity.

You're better off with the 30% that offers the most value. You can definitely do without the rest.

I will @jacksondavies, I am still doing my pruning. It's exhaustive but that's the only way to not make me stumble on unwanted contents. I have done my big trimming if you look at my following list, and am just halfway through.... lalalala am happy doing it. A spring cleaning season :)

Am yet to see Porn on this platform. I guess it's inevitable though. They just won't let us be. Thanks for sharing. Time to get my blocking game on

Hello @empress-eremmy, yes please take care and watch out for those damaging posts. Keep on blocking them all!
Stay Blessed and Steem On!

Thank you Ainie for this informantion. What I do is i check profile of my followers and than I follow back. I’m not saying I won’t be wrong I know I can be. But at least I can spare myself from spammers and porn contents. And now when you have inform us how to block unwanted users? Than things got more easer. Thanks Ainie you
always save us. One more great post. Keep it up! Stay blessed!
PA: will copy this comment to HHG6

You doing it the right way Shanu. I am sharing my bad experience and now am trying to correct my mistake by checking them one by one. It will be a long process... can only do it when I have the time. Now, still half the way through doing my checking and look at my followings list... I have trimmed them down tremendously.
