At what point (in steem power) does an up vote have a financial effect

in #steemit8 years ago

Ok  - a question for the 100,000 users - at what point does an up vote make a difference. I have noticed that early votes do not but that after several hours, my up vote can increase the amount by several cents.

I have researched all the posts and importance of voting in the first 30 mins, but am still confused! I would like to help the original content but I seem to have no impact, and that only whales can make an impact (which I am grateful for!)

Thanks!

OK the way it works is like this: if you upvote within the first 30 minutes, you are giving most of your curation award to the author. If you upvote after 30 minutes, you keep the curation award.

When you are upvoting a post that already has a lot of rewards, you frequently see a rise in the $$, but this is because your vote is added to a lot of other people's votes, and sometimes you "tip" the rshares enough to increase the total reward. However, it is unlikely that you will get a curation award for your efforts, especially if you have voted after a whale.

If that all sounds very confusing, you might like to look at the detail of your posts in steemd.

Here is the steemd version of this article:

https://steemd.com/steemit/@adamt/at-what-point-in-steem-power-does-an-up-vote-have-a-financial-effect

Click "advanced mode" and then scroll down and click "vote details".

You should see a list of everyone who has voted. The total of the rshares determines the total reward for the post. The total reward is split 75% to the author and 25% to the curators. The "wgt %" is the percentage each voter gets of the curation award.

Hey thanks for the info super helpful but question how do I view other articles in the steemed version?

Just take the url of your article and overwrite steemit with steemd.

Look at the example I gave above, it is the url of this article, but amended to say steemd.com at the start of the url

Thanks alot I knew it had to be something like that but didn't notice it until you pointed it out.. argh think I need to go sleep its late thanks alot for the lesson.

But it's only mid-morning here!! :)

Haha its 1 in the morning here lol time for napping, in that case have a great day and best of luck on steemit for the day.

You can click on the streems on the right hand side to see more posts

@bitcoiner & @johnerfx made some cool tools to switch between Steemit & Steemd.

@bitcoiner made a bookmarklet for Chrome & a menu pulldown for Firefox - which will also work in Chrome.

@bitcoiner's Chrome solution can be installed by going to @lantto site which lists a bunch of Steem Bookmarklets, http://steemlets.com/ (which also has a bunch of other neat bookmarklets).

@johnerfx created a Chrome Extension that was inspired by @bitcoiner original work

Thanks @alyssas - hope this helps the voters and those who have made comments

I would like to have this cleared up, as well. I'm thinking, based on my observations of vote impact, that one would have to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars of SP before they'd be handing out multiple dollars with a single vote.

Yup.
Vote Power is based upon an Alogrithm which has many variables such as reputation (which is based upon other variables) SteamPower, how soon you vote, you place in the Que that votes, and who knows what else. It's unpredictable.

To your question: "At what point does an up vote make a difference. I have noticed that early votes do not but that after several hours, my up vote can increase the amount by several cents."

For upvoting I think there is a bit of a trade off between rewards for the upvoter and rewards for the author. If a minnow like me votes after a post is already worth say $1000, I might add 10 cents to the overall payout, but if not that much more money gets added on after when I vote, let's say even an additional $200, at that point I might not even earn the minimum curation rewards of .001 SBD. If I voted early, for example when the total post value was only $25 and the post ended up being $150, most likely I'd earn a little bit of a curation reward.

Discussion on earning rewards as a curator
Because of your question, I did a little bit more research and I had forgotten about that commenters share in the Author rewards of the post. So as a curator it's best to make a comment as well as upvote at a good time. I'll have to test it again but I think even upvoting your own comment can help boost your curation reward on the post as well. (@johnsmith wrote a good post a while back - https://steemit.com/steemit/@johnsmith/how-i-increased-my-curation-rewards-by-more-than-1000-and-how-you-can-too )

Timing of your vote also matters. If you vote before 30 minutes you are sharing a portion of your curation reward with the author. If I am around I usually do vote before the 30 min mark because I want to try to get ahead of the other people that will be potentially voting and adding more value to the post. Voting early is also a great way for you to give a larger reward to the author. Voting at the 15 min mark is a 50/50 split of your rewards with the author, voting at the 20 min mark is a 75% curator/25% author split. @shenanigator mentioned this in his Steemit FAQ under 'How do reward distributions work?'.

As a manual curator, I regularly use @lantto 's Automatically upvote at x (minute) bookmarklet on chrome to time my votes. Link: http://steemlets.com/

I also am going to look into upvote bots since they can help with the upvoting around or before the 30 minute mark on my favorite authors.

http://steem.li/curators is also an interesting site to watch to see what the best upvote curators are upvoting

Thanks - some great additional comments that I wasn't aware of - and very important to comment as well as up vote! with this post currently at $0.04, there will be loads of $ to go around! :)

I am trying to figure this out myself. This steemstats site is helpful but I'm still confused.

Hey Adam I am trying to figure this out myself and I am thinking that it would probably have to be around 20k for a big impact and hundreds of thousands of dollars of SP for multiple dollars with a single vote. But yea some sort of chart or explanation would be awesome. upvoted

adam, as far as I know (indeed it is really hard to understand thoroughly):

  1. the ability to make a difference depends on: SP level (most crucial), your voting power when you vote, the level of payout of the voted post, and, I guess, the price of steem - this one is from my experience but not 100% sure.
  2. when I had around 2000 SP, I started to see a 0.01 impact (for a near zero payout post) but now my influence is almost the same - so I guess Steem price matters
  3. I actually want to propose to Steemit showing payout to third decimal place - letting the level to 'make a difference' 10 times smaller without changing anything. But I think this will affect minnows' perception and less frustration, which is really important. If you agree with me, you are welcome to write a post about it as I do not have time for several weeks to come. Actually steemstats.com already shows the impact of upvote to the thrid decimal place.

Thanks @deanliu. Really important points and it leads to a discussion as to how to increase participation. Whilst we have 100,000 accounts, steemd.com shows many, many less active users

I'm not sure how it works but @mauricemikkers the author of the Steemdollar.com site has an area that lists dollar value per 100% vote (link to post): http://steemdollar.com/dollar_per_vote.php

yeah, I know. but somehow it doesn't reflect reality currently... not even close. take me as an example, Its number is 16 times larger than reality.

Thanks guys - glad to see that I am not the only one in the dark!

Perhaps a whale, a dolphin and a minnow can upvote this post and see what the effect is! @dan @ned @berniesanders @dantheman

Ok - so it looks like you need to have in excess of 3600 steempower! thank you @alyssas. That impacted $0.01

This is quite helpful. Thank you!
