Snot Funny

My entry to a webcomic contest with the theme "Getting Sick." This is definitely more low brow humor than my traditional material, but then... there's not much funny about being sick.

I came up with the idea for a scene, based on the old joke, "You might think it's funny but it's snot." Here's some process images. My roughs are super rough. Also, full disclosure, I just cut and paste from panel 1 to the other two, then just redraw the arms and faces.

Decided to add in a milk carton just so you can tell he's eating breakfast. From the disheveled hair and cereal it should be evident that the scene is in the morning.

Then make the black line layer. I'm a lot more careful with this step than I used to be just because I use the paint bucket tool to fill in areas with color. I used to always end my line just before reaching the spot where it connects or overlaps another line, kind of Calvin and Hobbes style. But that creates much more work later.

Add in solid colors for the dudes.

And I like to use the gradient fill tool for large surfaces. Like the background wall and the table top. After this just needed to add in the dialog and we have a juvenile snot joke.

Grea insight on how you make your comic, I might steel a few of those tips like the gradient background :P

Gradient background is a great cheat, especially if most of that area is going to be filled with dialog anyway.

Yes, so far most of my comics are closed and white, but when i like to color I never know what to do with the background, so this is a great tip

What software do you work with? I primarily use Clip Studio and have been learning more about coloring techniques recently. Clip does seem to have a pretty smart & adjustable fill tool that can deal with some line gaps. In the couple practice pieces I’ve done so far, it made flatting so much easier for me than it used to be!

I'm using paint.net, a freeware paint program. I actually installed clip studio and was playing with the trial version a couple weeks ago. It looks really cool (especially being able to move around wire-frame models on their own layer). Bu I don't have the patience to learn how to use it properly. One thing that is conspicuously absent from paint.net (that I like using in other programs) is there is no Blending tool. Doesn't affect my comics that much, but if I'm working on a more serious painting it's something I would like to have available...

Hey @sidekickmatt, your comic is so awsome! I can tell your a master at it. I’ve been painting and drawing all my life, I’m a 59 year old woman, and never drew a comic in my intire life, always drew naturalism. But since I came on Steemit , in the end of last December, I gave it a shot, and I have had a great time making them for this contest and also “Pinky and Spiky’s Drawing Contest” which is another fun comic to do. I never realized there’s so many things you can learn to make a professional looking comic, it’s very entertaining and fun, I learned something from your wonderful post, Good luck , I hope to also post a comic here if I can think of a funny joke about being sick, yikes.... I’m going to have to think long and hard, it’s snot funny being sick!

Thanks, Lildebbiecakes for the praise!

Hahaha! I read the last panel in batman's voice!
Awesome comic dude! 😁

Thanks, but to be honest, it kind of grosses me out...

Sometimes justice is gross... But it still needs to be served! :D
