Following Jesus: Conditions for following Jesus II
Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I want to continue with my series - Following Jesus, and this post will be the second part of the last post Conditions for following Jesus.
In my last post, I mentioned the the three conditions for following Jesus as it is outlined in Luke 9:23, which are
- Deny yourself
- Take up your cross
- Follow Him
Luke 9:23
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Matthew 4:18-22 (NIV)
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,
22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
I said I will take these conditions one after the other but before I begin to take these conditions one after the other, the following must be noted.
- The conditions laid down by Jesus in Luke 9:23 are not optional, they are imperative.
- Following Jesus requires great adjustment. You cannot be where you are and go with Jesus at the same time.
- The conditions are not meant to be fulfilled as a group or as a family, they are what each individual must fulfilled.
- These conditions are not meant to be fulfilled by proxy or by delegation, rather every intending follower of Jesus is meant to fulfill them by himself/herself
- The conditions are a complete whole which means you cannot choose to fulfil one and ignore the others.
