One month since introduction of "Steemit Killer": are we dead or stronger than ever?

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!

I am sorry for the clickbaitish title but hopefully, it will make sense after reading this post where I would like to present my little reflection on the current state of our blockchain and our community.

Yesterday, on July 1, it was exactly one month since Dan Larimer, one of the two co-founders of Steemit, made the long-awaited announcement when he, after a lot of hype and speculation, introduced a new blockchain-based social network Voice that was nicknamed "the Steemit Killer". Why this menacing nickname? Well, because some people thought that Voice had the potential to kill Steemit (and possibly also Steem).

To be honest with you, I don´t know how Voice has been doing or if they already launched a fully functioning platform at all since I didn´t register there and I am not planning to do that anytime soon. However, I can tell you how Steem has been doing. I know it is important to distinguish between Steemit and Steem (because Steem is so much more than Steemit!) and I know that it might have been "just" Steemit that was targeted and supposed to be killed by Voice but let´s talk about the bigger picture here. Let´s talk about how the entire world of Steem has been doing since that Dan Larimer´s announcement.

As a matter of fact, the Steem blockchain is currently one of the busiest and most active blockchain with some of the highest numbers of daily interactions of all cryptos. Although most alt coins are yet to get boosted by the recent growth of Bitcoin and the price of Steem has lately been hovering just around (ridiculously underrated) 40 cents, the Steem blockchain has been literally brimming with all kinds of exciting projects, applications and initiatives created by some inspiring members of our amazing community. Let me now name a few here to justify this statement.

ThreeSpeak

Supported by our Steem stars @theycallmedan and @oracle-d, @threespeak has successfully established as the (un)official home for all de-platformed and de-monetized content creators from mainstream social media, guaranteeing the freedom of speech and attracting more and more great and influential vloggers and video producers to our blockchain almost every day. You should really check the #threespeak tag at least once a week, you can find some amazing and highly valuable stuff there. Thank you @treespeak for making our blockchain even cooler place than it was before. You are awesome.

Palnet

#Palnet is another great project that took our blockchain by storm. Built on top of Steem, this platform allows Steemians earn twice with their posts and curation activities. By now, probably everybody has heard of #palnet and most of my Steemians fellows are now using this tag with their posts to earn some Pal Coins as some extra reward but if there is still someone who is not familiar with this project, you can learn more about it in this post that I wrote some time ago.

SteemEngine

Speaking of Pal Coins, I must mention another fascinating feature that was built (by @aggroed and his team I think?) to make Steem more attractive and enjoyable. I am talking about none other than the super cool Steem Engine where anyone can create their own tokens and smart contracts on the Steem blockchain.

DTube

Our decentralized version of Youtube, DTube is increasingly popular not just in the Steem community but also beyond it. Just a few days ago, they published this post where they announced some exciting news (including the introduction of their own tokens and the possibility to post videos directly from URL) so users of this platform are probably in for even more thrilling times.

CleanPlanet

My favorite Steem initiative, @cleanplanet continues to motivate people to do something for our planet while being rewarded for their efforts. Brilliant idea that everyone has to love. Keep it up guys, you rock!

Actifit

@actifit keeps our community in the move & healthy as this project rewards you for your physical exercise. I mean have you ever really thought about this concept? You can earn crypto by just walking! Talk about another groundbreaking idea.

Games

The gaming industry has been also going strong on the Steem blockchain with #DrugWars, #SteemMonsters, #NextColony, #RoadOfRich and other games being popular these days.

SteemHunt & Tasteem

Product reviewers can get rewarded for their posts on Steem Hunt and restaurant reviewers can do the same on Tasteem.

TravelFeed

The travel community of Steem gathers around the newly launched platform Travel Feed that aims to become the online hotspot for all individual travelers (and I am sure the @travelfeed team will accomplish this ambitious goal as there are some of the most amazing Steemian minds such as our one and only @jpphotography behind this great project).

Now this was just a little sample of what is happening on our blockchain right now. There might be dozens of other awesome projects created on Steem that I don´t know about or just forgot to mention here. Moreover, many Steemians host various interesting contests, challenges and initiatives, which is also a great way to give back to the community as well as to attract new, creative people to Steem.

So back to the title of this post and the original question. Are we dead or stronger than ever? Well, you decide. To me, however, the answer cannot be clearer ;)

Thanks for your attention everyone. Have a wonderful day and keep on steeming & powering up!

PS: If you like this post, feel free to share it as I believe it is important to remind ourselves how awesome, creative and resourceful our community is and how exciting and rapid the current development on our blockchain has been. Some people tend to ignore all of that just because of the low prices but if you look at the bigger picture, you realize how many advantages we have compared to other cryptos. And I am confident it will be reflected in the price too when the alt season comes ;)

While block.one is spending USD 30 Million on the voice domain name and has so far produced nothing but words, on TravelFeed the travel community from Steem and beyond can already enjoy a fantastic platform. A we do not even require KYC ;) Thanks for the mention!

I am definitely going to write another post dedicated just to TravelFeed because you guys are absolutely amazing and your new platform deserves maximum support and attention ;) Thank you for being awesome!

Thank you so much for supporting TravelFeed!

My pleasure guys, you rock! :)

To be fair voice isn’t up yet! You mentioned some great projects but tbh it seems like the steemit community is super divided right now. There’s hf21, growing problems with bots, low engagement on steemit, and a ton of controversy about steem-engine. I really like the platform but I think we have some serious issues to address if we want to keep growing these dapps.

Thanks for the correction. Don´t you know when they (Voice) are supposed to be up and running? Well, considering the amount of new projects that have been (are being) created on Steem, it is quite natural that not everything works perfectly but to me, the current development is a huge promise. It is a proof that the community is still there, including some brilliant minds capable of great things. Hopefully, the issues and bugs will be addressed and solved so that we can keep the momentum and head in the right direction ;)

Yea I came back to steem at a good time for sure! Lucky I found steem monsters lol.

For voice I keep checking once in a while but it’s still just that beta screen thing. I don’t think it’s a steem killer but I would really like a decentralized option to twitter/facebook. I never got into twitter so it’ll be fun to try an alternative.

Thanks for your views :) I love the @cleanplanet initiative! I've felt like Steem is getting quieter. I don't think many people read the stuff I out out there as engagement (a simple comment) is extremely low. I do think things will get better!

Yeah, @cleanplanet are awesome :) What a shame I haven´t made a post for them in quite a while... You are right, the engagement has been very low but obviously, that doesn´t stop the developers and all the creative guys who seem to be more active than ever, churning out one great project after another. I am sure the social engagement will rise with the price.
