Decentralization Of Our Infrastructure.

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

Over the past year or so, I have been thinking about how we can literally decentralize our infrastructure.

One of the key problems that we have is "storage space" for all those damn cat pictures.

& the only idea that comes to mind is a decentralized file sharing system, somewhat like the ones already out on the market, but one that is used only for our Steem blockchain.

Hence it would have to be paid out of the rewards pool.

But, it would go back to the people.

How?

Simple enough, a reward/payout in SP for the disk space "rented" to our cloud storage system which works somewhat like a "torrent".

However, it would have to be coded in such a way that at least 2 copies are kept on the network of storage space (disks).

So in case one vanishes, the second one is there and automatically a second disk that is up and running gets the data that is lost from the supplier who stopped supplying their services.

I don't know if this is "the best" solution to ensure decentralization of our infrastructure, but it sure is the best one that I can come up with.

I guess I'm thinking out aloud here.

Somewhat worried that I will hear "it can't be done", yet, to be totally honest, I haven't heard that from anyone lately, people are thinking out of the box more and more, and I love it.
So, I dare mention this idea here.

Just wanted to throw the idea/concept out there, see what anyone thinks or has to say about it.

idk. but I sure don't want us to be left dependent on Steemit Inc. for the bulk of the infrastructure and likewise it is time we start taking care of things, Steem is here and it is here to stay, why not make it work for all of us and expand on our network and infrastructure.

We have an entire network of people here, that is the key component to making any business venture work.

So we have what it takes.

Hope that this kinda gets some people thinking little about what our options are.

Cheers.

STEEM ON.

Yours truly.

Some great thoughts there, we wouldn’t be her if it wasn’t for Steem inc but that doesn’t mean we can’t move forward reliant on them for every new development. The hundreds of DApps are testimont to that.
I would be great to see a structure that rewarded Independant development more but I can foresee some risks with that as well. What happens when somenone or group decides to take their bat n ball and create there own game?

In this case it would be done similar to what IPFS or Storj do it.

A "decentralized cloud network" paid by the TB supplied.

Hence expanding the possibilities for people to earn Steem (SP) and likewise would totally decentralize our storage of "cat photos".

Being a "Steem network of Hard Disks all over the world" justifies the rewards from the rewards pool.

If someone decides to stop supplying, then they don't get any rewards from that point onwards, as they are "renting out their Hard Disks" and the code would have to work in such a way that all that data that is no longer available on that hard disk gets stored onto the next available disk from the other copy of each item on other disks.

All simple in theory, it is just getting the consensus and awareness to a point where we tackle this growing issue before than it becomes a burning issue.

Again, just thinking out aloud and looking at what happens when a centralized point of storage decides to shut shop.

That's what I though it would be the natural way for STEEM since the beginning.. but I failed completely to understand that being all this work done by mostly "FREE" concept "work", there is actually a company behind the scenes, that still needs to survive and see some profit.

And probably that level of decentralization at the beginning was too high for the costs that could be supported.

I like to think of it as "evolution".

We are growing up and a part of that means taking on responsibilities rather than depending on mum and dad for everything.

Hey Jack.

I’m not a techie, so not sure if what I’m about to share is along the same lines of what you’re contemplating...

But what is being put together over on Holo sounds like what you’re talking about.... maybe..?!???

Here’s a link for you to follow, maybe it’ll lead to more info that may/may not answer your question.

In any case, I think the building of the Holochain will be completely decentralised in that everyone who operates a Holoport (small server that people own and have) is essentially creating a completely decentralised system.

Check it out, would love your feedback on it. Perhaps we could even use the ideas and bring them over to Steem? Imagine if every Steem user had a ‘Steemport’...?!?

Seems like it.

Just from what I read on that blog post.

Will look into it and I fully agree, no need to reinvent the wheel, just choose the right make and model of tyre and cruise!

Something like that would most likely be a very good thing.

I think LBRY.io already gave us the solution. I use their Spee.ch service all the time for my pictures.

It's super easy. You can just upload a picture and use the embed code it gives you and pop that into your article.

Now, that is just for free content, but they do have a whole other service using their browser for paid content. That isn't available on the regular ol' internet - yet.

Ah, never mind... Steem blockchain. Sorry.

This is among the first things I read today.

It got me thinking. (seriously)

Now I'll be chewing on this all day.

Thanks.

Have you had a look at noia? I think that’s a step in a good direction. Stuff like ipfs is also awesome but needs to come in a one click box as a lot of people just don’t bother 🤣

No I haven't, yet I am sure there are many options out there which could suffice our (future) needs.

We have the main component to making this work: "An international network of people" who already accept Steem and use Steem.

Will have a look at it and see how they tackle it.

Thanks for the tip.

It would also mean that Dapps and Apps such as Dtube wouldn't have to use IPFS and other services that are related to or interconnected to other blockchains. They would build upon our infrastructure and add to it and be rewarded for it too.

Win/Win.

Again, just pointing out something that I didn't touch on. Lack of coffee, that is my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

IPFS isn't related or conected to any blockchain, it's just a distributed storage thing.

I've done stupider things pre-coffee don't worry XD

Yep, but it is used to build up Filecoin,

Thank you so much for participating in the Partiko Delegation Plan Round 1! We really appreciate your support! As part of the delegation benefits, we just gave you a 3.00% upvote! Together, let’s change the world!

It’s a great idea if someone can code it to make it work.

This post has been included in the latest edition of SoS Daily News - a digest of all the latest news on the Steem blockchain.

Hey! Decentralizing infrastructure for Steem is a great way to make it more independent. Snax wants Steem to grow, and to become larger than ever before and we want to help Steem. People can earn more money on their posts, with Snax and without leaving Steem or other socials:

Every initiative out there that promotes and nurtures decentralization is OK in my books!

We can't all do "everything", so if we all do our bit, the job will get done.

Cheers.
