After suffering through a long, traumatic life of Cocoa Puffs addiction (and having all of his attempts to break that addiction sabotaged by sadistic children), Sonny OD's on the delicious cereal. In his final moments, lying on a squalid supermarket floor in a puddle of his own chocolately sputum, the hapless bird gives voice to his one remaining hope: to go to a better place where he will never be tormented by Cocoa Puffs again. He then closes his eyes and dies... only to awaken in a hellish afterlife.

In this harrowing realm he is confronted by the spirits of the countless child slaves and indentured laborers who were forced to farm the cocoa in his favorite cereal. Agrieved and ashamed, he staggers from one recrimination to the next, wandering for miles and eons. Finally, deep in the bowels of this purgatory, Sonny encounters Gramps, who has been enduring the same torment and has lost his mind.

But as Sonny listens to the old bird's agonized shrieks and despairing cries of "Crunchy, munchy, chocolatey," he has an epiphany. Instead of shrinking back from his accusers and denying his guilt, he begins to own it, searching in the darkest reaches of his shame for the road to atonement.
