Cereal Mascot Horror Movies #4: Turning Trix

After decades of trying (and mostly failing) to steal his favorite cereal from kids, the Trix rabbit concocts a wild new scheme: to get it from adults! He disguises himself as a movie star, talks his way into a Hollywood party, pockets a gram of heroin, then sells it on the street and uses the profits to buy Trix. To his astonishment, the plan goes off without a hitch! He retreats to his burrow with twenty-seven boxes of the sweet stuff and enjoys a weeklong binge.

In the months that follow he embarks on a series of similar scams, expecting every time to be found out. But they all succeed, bringing him riches and Trix beyond his wildest dreams! As he racks up triumph after triumph, his life becomes a fruitalicious swirl of deception and excess.

Yet at the heart of that churn is a growing sense of emptiness. Is this all there is? the rabbit asks himself, even as he schemes and scams and feasts. Though his past may have been bleak, he always had his dreams to look to. Now that those dreams have all come true, everything feels flat, his life bereft of purpose. And the adult world is a sick and sorry place, far removed from the sunny back yards and polished kitchens he once knew. As his scams lead him deeper and deeper into that world, the broken lives he brushes up against cut him in turn.

Am I any different from them? he wonders as he watches men and women paw and scrabble after wealth and fame and pleasure. Soon he can feel their desperation leeching into him, infecting him with a gnawing hunger that not even Trix can put a dent in. Still, he binges, slamming down box after box, trying to lose himself in the raspberry red, the orangey orange, the lemony yellow, the grapity purple, the lime green, and the blue berry blue! His behavior becomes erratic, his disguises and schemes increasingly outlandish, as if he's daring his victims to find him out and hold him to account, as if he yearns to hear the old refrain, "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!"

But they all remain oblivious to the deception. The rabbit then begins to question his own sanity, and he wonders whether his whole life is just a scheme, his reality another fanciful disguise, soon to be torn away.
