For artists and writers, the Spirit Animal Contest is a great way to express yourself and participate in Steemit's many contests.

After writing the original post, I translated it to Chinese for folks on Steemit who can't read or write in English. In doing so, I quickly discovered that there really isn't a concept of "spirit animals" in Chinese language or culture. I've written this post to help clarify what I'm looking for in the Spirit Animal Contest.

What is a "Spirit Animal?"

A spirit animal, in this contest, refers to one of the following:

• A "power animal"
• A "spirit guide"
• Your own interpretation of what a "spirit animal" is, as long as it's clear

Power animal

Power animals are a shamanic concept, introduced to Western culture as recently as 1980. The idea comes from a mix of European occultism blended with Native American culture--they are the result of two very different traditions, and are often associated with the New Age movement.

Power animals are animals that offer wisdom and valuable insights to humans. They are spiritual creatures with supernatural abilities. They are helpers, but not unique to who they are helping.

If you decide to submit a power animal, please be sure to include why that animal is guiding you at this time.

Spirit guide

A spirit guide is a little different from a power animal. It is a Native American tradition. A spirit guide is assigned to each person, and each spirit guide is an animal that is reflective of the person's personality. Spirit guides tend to be enlightened, and offer guidance when clarity or a decision is needed.

Your own interpretation

Of course, those two definitions may not perfectly fit with your interpretation of what a spirit animal is. That's fine! You can submit under your own definition, so long as that definition is clear.
