On 2016, Pokémon GO was launched, right from the hands of Niantic. Inc, it was a revolutionary offer that promised to bring –at least partially- the illusion of Pokémon hunting "on the real world", with a layout that uses GPS technology on iOS and Android devices, it was an authentic boom.

This delivery’s boom – parallel on what regards to story to the other games of the franchise, as even now days, in plain 2018, the Team Leaders don’t have their own stories, and there is little to none worldboulding that places us in time and space – touched the Cosplay World inevitably.

"Choose Wisely!"

Beyond the fact that Pokémon is a cultural phenomenon, just to the same level of Dragon Ball, the esthetic and design of the Team Leaders is and it’s still being absolutely irresistible to both Cosplayers and Cosmakers, the secret?:

The Designs were made by a member who was involved on the character design for the "Fire Emblem" Videogame Sagas.

And who I fell in love with was, Mystic Team Leader: Blanche.

"The Ice Titan Avatar"

Blanche doesn’t only count with a gorgeous and ambiguous design, just the kind that I love in many of the characters that I would like to represent, but also her personality –or what we have been able to notice of it by the short glimpses and dialogues in the game- as it is also interpreted by the mind and hand of the fabulous Surfacage on her web-comic "And the world will turn to ash", was what convinced me that I completely needed this costume in my repertory.

Due those reasons, at the end of 2016, I decided to include this character in my Cosplay List.

✋ BUT ONE MOMENT PLEASE! ✋

Let’s start at the Beginning, orderly.

Before we start throwing away our budget, get supplies, and wigs/shoes/pokeballs at once, let me share with you this life saver starting tip.

LET’S START WITH THE GOOD FOOT!

🎨 Cosplay Tutorial:
~ Team Mystic Badge (Leader Blanche Cosplay) ~

"Identifying every color of each piece of clothing separately will help you to avoid confusion, you will see colors and hues just as they are; usually: if you place one dark blue next to White, this blue will appear to be darker than it really is." - Duplication and color guide created by @vanuzza, my super designer and Cosplay teammate.-

The first step that I consider necessary for every single one of us that is about to start a Cosplay project, is to create a color palette for the character that you are going to recreate.

By experience, I can tell that a printed color palette is more trustworthy and safe to localize the right supplies in what comes to color, hue and exact tone. Forget about bringing guide images on your cellphone as the only/trustworthy source at the moment you are about to buy fabrics and paints.

Printing the costume references may not be enough neither. According to each design, you may get visually overwhelmed and confuse yourself.

"The final result must be like this!, use the dropper in the editing program of your preference to extract the color sample of each garment, accessory and detail, and thus create something similar to this." - Color Palette created by @vanuzza.-

Once you have gotten your printed references and color palette, we can get ourselves into the supplies hunting safely. Your nerves and wallet will thank you, is something really terrible when, at mid-term of making your cosplay, beneath the sewing machine’s light, that you have gotten the fabric’s hues, threads or paint (or even the three!) wrong.

MATERIALS

Greaseproof paper.	White Semi-Aniline.
Royal Blue Semi-Aniline.	Turquoise Semi-Aniline.
Turquoise Thread.	Dark Blue Thread.
Needles to embroid beads, N° 10.

TOOLS

Pencil.	Fine Tip Marker.
Square.	Sewing Machine (optional).
Paper Scissors.	Royal Blue Permanent Marker.
Royal Blue Thread.	Contact or Permanent Glue (optional).

• NOTE: Another option to semi-aniline is upholstery fabric; you can get it by meters on specialized places where furniture or car seats are upholstered.

LET’S DO IT!

• • • STEP N° 1 • • •
"Making the Guide Pattern"

First, we need a guide vector. There are some variations of this badge’s logo, it’s up to you to choose what appeals the most to you.

You can print it, or trace the silhouette directly (VERY GENTLY) over your computer screen, helping yourself with a not very sharpened pencil, and the greaseproof paper to trace. After this, restrike the lines with a fine tip marker. This is your base pattern.

"Duplicating the pattern to get all the Pieces"

Now, you will create two duplications of this pattern: One solely for the main frame, and the second with the image of Articuno, and the small frames.

Cut out the Articuno very carefully, including the small frames.

You shall get the following result.

"Copying the pattern into the final material"

Carefully, place the small pieces of the patterns that you had created on the semi-aniline of the corresponding color to each section.

I recommend duplicating the pieces twice, in case of any damage, you can replace it without starting from scratch.

"Preview of the Final Result"

As you may had noticed, I haven’t used the royal blue semi-aniline, instead, I decided to color Articuno’s part with a permanent Sharpie marker.

Place all those little precious parts in the place that your guiding vector indicates. This moment is crucial, because here is where you can correct imperfections before attaching anything permanently.

Only when you are sure that you are satisfied with what it looks like, you can use a little bit of contact glue in the center of each piece to keep them from moving from their place.

"Attaching all the Pieces"

🚀 It’s the Moment of Truth! 🚀

Here you will encounter two options: You can choose between attaching each piece with the sewing machine’s help (using a small stitch, that won’t go up 2 or 2.5 at the indicator of stitch distance), very, very slowly so as not to disfigure the work...

Or you can do this by hand, using a needle to embroider beads, just as those shown on the image above the tools’ list.

🎨 And why using needles that are usually reserved to embroider bride’s veils? 🎨

Because those needles are specially thin, their thickness is minimum, and this represents fewer resistance at the moment of going through the material. The less resistance, the more disguised will be the "holes" that the needle will leave on the material (and also, you won’t destroy your fingers on the effort; those needles go through dense fabric materials as if those were nothing but butter). Remember that the semi-aniline isn’t as the common fabrics and it’s elasticity is very, very limited.

Place the badge on the sleeve of the jacket/overcoat of your suit, you can sew it by hand, or by machine (I recommend using a sewing machine for a neater look), and it’s done!.

✨ TIPS FOR A BETTER RESULT ✨

If you had used a royal blue market to color Articuno’s part, you can seal the color with a little of SURPASS (dilute acrylic resin); the Surpass makes the piece waterproof and prevents it from cracking. Two layers will be enough.

✨ ANECDOTE ABOUT BLANCHE COSPLAY’S DEBUT ✨

As I mentioned above, I made Blanche’s suit at the end of 2016, but for different reasons, it never got its debut.

I made it in order to use it specifically for one of the days of Caracas Comic Con during November of that year, on which I was hired as Special Guest, however, I traveled while being sick, and the discomfort did not allow me to use the Cosplay (it was the first time I was going to use a fitted suit).

I still remember the gentleness of the organization, that understood my situation and were really thoughtful about it (as it was not well seen that a Cosplayer that is hired or called as a Special Guest does not use the attire that informs / offers in his contract, and stipulates the schedule).

Great work! These would definitely prove very popular at many of the Comic Cons we attend as vendors. We sell a bunch of Pokemon buttons/pins and people are always looking for more items. It is such a great idea and a perfect tutorial.

It fills me with a lot of illusion to know that you liked my tutorial (I have been hyper excited and full of emotions since I noticed the vote from Curie, I don't know what to do!); one of my goals is to teach people how to make their own suits and props on a gentle and accessible manner, also to demonstrate that pretty and neat things aren’t necessarily made with expensive ways.
