E. M. WALKER CHALLENGE #02 - HUNTER

HUNTER

The sound of the explosion caused him to run off into the forest. With hearing umpteen times stronger than that of humans; it must have sounded as if the world was coming to an end – when Mary-Jane caused the dynamite to trigger.

With scary defensive howls and his tail between his legs Hunter her trusty hound scampered off into the forest. He remained there until she came down from the hill with Morning Eagle! Hunter had been taught to fear and defend against Indians. He rushed toward them in attack mode, wanting to save his “master” from the enemy. Morning Eagle saw him coming from a distance he took a defensive stance against the approaching dog, pointing the rifle right at him. Mary-Jane went hysterical, but Morning Eagle, swept her aside with one motion of his arm. “Noooooo!” she shouted in fear that hunter was about to die. Morning eagle shot a warning shot which made the hound stop dead in his tracks! He whimpered and whined, overwhelmed by the loud shot.

Mary-Jane called him and he approached cautiously, fearful lest Morning Eagle produce another shot. He growled and snarled at the Indian, but still with tail between his legs. When he reached her, Mary-Jane hugged and petted the traumatised dog. With hunter now calm the three proceeded down the hill.

They walked for nearly a half a day before they reached The Indian Settlement. Hunter nearly went berserk surround by all these Indians, but Mary-Jane had managed to keep him calm, “It’s OK boy, calm down” she repeated. Her soothing voice did the trick.

As soon as they had entered into the “village” Morning Eagle summonsed the interpreter. A dialogue soon ensued, involving The Village Chief. The narrative of the meeting was simple; return the Indian land for protection and sovereignty in the tribe. With tears in her eyes the powerless Mary-Jane conceded. Morning Eagle had a few more demands, he had no intention of returning the rifle, binoculars and hunting knife – he made it official in the negotiations, while she was still vulnerable. He wanted Hunter too, but she defiantly rejected the notion. With swollen wet eyes and high pitched voice, she yelled! “No, you can’t have him...his all I have left.” The Village Chief looked at Morning Eagle, questioningly - which caused the wily Morning eagle to retract his demand. The meeting ended with the village chief commanding of a separate compound for Mary-Jane with all the resources she would require for sustenance. The village sprung into life and by night fall she had a wigwam for Hunter and her. They made and maintained her fire, brought plenty of wood, water and food. Mary-Jane squirmed at some of the food, but thought it would be a good meal for Hunter.

Throughout the day, members of the tribe came to with welcome her with gifts. Some brought animal skins and fur, to keep her warm. Other brought pottery to serve her every need, while others brought her beads and jewelry. Mary-Jane was welcomed into the Tribe around the evening campfire in a ceremony that lasted several hours with, food, drink, song and dance.

Mary-Jane hardly slept a wink all night; the change was just too sudden. When the sun rose the next morning she was a member of the tribe and activities sprung into life around here. She had no purpose, she felt completely bored. Within a short while Morning Eagle was around, with lovely treats for Hunter. He petted and spoiled the dog terribly. The brave was a master animal handler, and soon had the dog eating out of the palm of his hands.

Over time, Hunter felt the change in social structure. Although, Morning Eagle honoured his agreement not to remove Hunter from her; the bond between he and the dog grew stronger, until they were in separable. Hunter accompanied the Indian everywhere. Morning Eagle soon had Hunter partake in hunting activities; but always brought him back to Mary-Jane at the end of the day...
