Shopshots week 12. Expensive coffee spill.

Hey there car fans, sorry I haven't done this for a couple of weeks. For anyone who hasn't seen my previous instalments of shopshots I'll fill you in. I'm a journeyperson automotive service technician who likes to document some of the "fun" things I see at work.

This week I had an SUV to diagnose why the battery was going dead and the heater didn't work.

It turns out the owner spilled coffee on the centre control panel and it shorted a few thing out! Can you see the trail of coffee(smelled like hot chocolate) on the circuit board?
Apparently insurance will pay a $3000 bill for a coffee spill!

Check out that tire! The snow is covering the steel belts that are poking out. Oh my thats dangerous.

Some easy jobs can be a little tricky. For instance this heater blower motor is supposed to fit out through all of theses components.

I had to remove the gas pedal assembly and the brake pedal assembly to replace the blower motor-all within .6 of an hour.

Ha! It did fit through there.

I got it all back together in .7 of an hour and the snow was only starting to melt on the floor mat.

Liquids are the bane of electronics. I spilled some water on the keyboard of my wife's Apple laptop a couple years ago. She used it for work and it was a higher end model.

It was off and immediately turned it upside down and we let it dry for several days. When we tried to turn it back on it was dead. Apparently apple doesn't have a thin rubber membrane between the keyboard and the motherboard. Or if they do for some reason it didn't work very well. It wasn't even that much water. We had to buy a new computer. About a $2500 hit!

Oh man that sucks. Probally home insurance would have covered that in some weird way.

I actually washed the above circuit board and it worked correctly afterwords, but it was already an insurance claim and they said replace it or it will be on our shop should it fail in the future

Very interesting. My van only lets the heater fan stay at dull blast now. I do remember last year having to slam on my breaks and my drink went flying into my dash. I wonder if that is the reason! I would of never thought of that being the cause. No battery issue here tho! Thankfully. Great post!

Does it only work on one speed or on all speeds? Also there may be a cabin air filter in your heater system and it could be plugged causing poor airflow.

No matter what speed i set it to it blows out full blast! I can still change temperature tho!

Hmm I've had a few vehicles with the same problem. Likely the resistor/module is faulty.

Thanks for the heads up. I will take a look!

Hey dude.. have a nice weekend!

Nice post by the way.. cheers!

Thanks CJ, I'm going crosscountry skiing sunday and monday. Stay safe out there man🎿

I'm always in awe when I see the work technicians do. I have a 2005 Subaru Impreza Wrx(Posted picture on my introduction post along with my brand new 2016 Dodge Challenger), I live in Idaho so I needed something with good All-Wheel drive. I do all of the work to it, I've modified it quote a bit, and also have done some major maintenance items as well and it is not always easy! I used to work at a Dodge dealer here in my town, and the shop was super hectic all the time!
Respect!

It certainly is a challenging trade. I'll find some time this weekend to browse through you blog.

I feel your pain. I have been a Volkswagen tech for 18 years. Most all of our warranty labor times are trash. It is amazing the tricks you find when you are flat rate.

It can be fun sometimes though. Even though I'm on straight time I still strive to meet book time. Thanks for stopping in ddc😁
