"Gay pride" is wrong

in #sex8 years ago (edited)

I saw a photo on FB asking "who would you sex". You could choose between some girls and a trans using emojis. This was one of those "cause havok between people" posts. The author exalted how he'd clearly prefer the shemale. I hate posts like this. It spreads the wrong idea.

Gay pride? What.

All kinds of discrimination are an attitude of bad character. But it doesn't make sexuality something to be proud of. It's as ridiculous as straight pride or flaunting your natural blond hair or exquisite proportions.

You didn't put any effort into it, it's not a skill you developed or even a choice you made. You were born like this. Why do you think it's something you should boast? It actually puts emphasys on the normality of being straight. But it's just as normal!

Keep calm and deal with the world

Now, I'm not telling you to change how you act. Just please keep in mind what's valid reasoning, even if you have to use this "gay pride" thing to push away the hate. Which by itself is very comprehensible, since not that many people go beyond shallow ideas after all.

Well, maybe I'm wrong.

I don't own the universal truth, afteral. Let me know why if you disagree.

Thank you for reading!

Sort:

every other TV show exhibits straight pride, most stories are about straight people wanting to have sex or have had sex or they want to have sex. not to mention that seems to be most of what straight guys talk about when getting together. So, maybe when you grow up fearing for your life or getting kicked out of your home because of your retarded parents, then you'd understand the value of celebrating your pride and identity later on.

If you went through a life in fear even after you got kicked out and you're here to tell your story, you should be proud of it, because you're a strong person who survived all of that shit, regardless of your sexuality.

Making statements about gay pride is still useful to get the message through the ignorant people, like the retarded parents you mentioned, since sometime's it's the only way to push them back and demand respect.

That's what I wrote about in my post.

but i don't agree that you have to push anyone to demand respect, i just accept that my parents will not love me for who I am and move on. I am thankful they got me as far as they did before abandoning me, but so what? some kids grew up with far off parents and they turned out ok. some kids had only one or no parent. instead of forcing our parents to love us, why not go love us some new parents who will?

In that case I meant more like for your own safety. You know, against violent people or those who don't want you to have the same rights as they do. Or those that ignorantly discriminate.

ugh violent people are gross.

Except in cases of legitimate defense or for sports (because it's like consensual or something like that, you know, their personal taste which I respect), I strongly believe violence is behavior of the weak.

I agree. It takes a lot more strength to remain calm and peaceful than it is to lash out in anger and act in violent ways.

I don't know, I just think it is the laziest, poorest and most selfish"solution." It's turning down an intellectual challenge just because they don't want to think at all.

So just to make sure we're on the same page, you don't still think I wrote about was offensive, right? I didn't mean to and I don't think I wrote it that way.

to be honest, I forgot what the original post was. I am just having fun talking to you now. and don't worry about if others thought you were offensive, free speech is stressful sometimes.

That was the exact vibe I was getting from this conversation, I'm glad.

Well, I understand that gay partners who wanted to include each other on insurance as "spouse" ran into a lot of trouble in the past. So, my feelings about gay pride is that they needed to make a very public statement because the insurance companies that were refusing to allow a gay partner to be included as spouse needed some political prodding.

So, to me, the "pride" part of gay pride, seems to me more like it should have been called gay political action.

Every year in Pensacola, on Memorial Day, there is a gay pride beach party. And, I was thinking about having a straight pride event at the same time on the other end of the beach. And my feelings on it were that I would do it to be ironic not mean.

But, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that sexuality isn't something to be proud of. Keeping fit, doing excellent work, and maintaining relationships is something to be proud of. So, my feelings are that the gay pride thing is a semantics issue. Because it seems to be more about politics and familiarity than personal pride.

Very interesting article!

Looks like we're on the exact same page here. I'm glad you liked it!

I like the way you've approached this. especially since Pride events have, of late, become the focal points of so much oppression olympics one-upsmanship and identity-politics circle-jerking. That being said, there is still some value to having events to assert your value when you are or have been oppressed in your society (BLM being another example of this).

I believe this happens because, more than ever in modern days, people have lost their identities. They think of themselves only as a set of specific physical characteristics, beliefs or moral values. It's like they're not whole persons anymore.

I gave it some extra thought and I actually don't know much about that because there's no such thing going on in my country so it never ocurred to me that was even possible. Not much politics itself going there then?
