Introduction To Backlinks And The Backlinks History - SEO Tutorial Series - # 14th

in #seo7 years ago

Welcome to the fourteenth episode in my SEO tutorial series. In the last tutorial, we started to discuss Off-Page SEO and its techniques. It's been a long time since I last updated the series, so I want to take this opportunity and update it today. Hopefully, I could maintain the pace but really too many projects are going on.

In the last tutorial, we discussed the importance and uses of Social signals and how the network of friends can help you achieve your goals. There, we also discussed the manual ways of increasing your followers/friends and I mentioned there that I'll write about a better way to build the high-quality network as quickly as possible.

But today, I've decided to discuss the core part of Off-Page SEO which is "backlinks". Your back-links play an important role in indexing, ranking or deindexing of your site. You might be wondering about why there can be de-indexation, right? Well. just follow the series and you'll know the answer.

What are backlinks and the backlinks history?

A backlink is an incoming link from an external site pointing to your site. It can be from any site including the directories. Backlinks history just shows how many links are pointing to your site and what is the quality of the sites which are linking your site.

There are two broad categories of backlinks history and I personally call them as:

  • Quantitative backlinks history
  • Qualitative backlinks history

From a beginner's perspective, building high number of backlinks might be a key to success and he starts building links without taking into consideration the quality of site or the page, he just want to build the links because he believes that doing so will make him successful in ranking his article/page on search engines. But the funny thing is, it is a sure way to failure!

Yes, you read it correctly. Your quantity backlinks don't really matter. What actually matters is the quality of your links, even if they are less, you can beat your competitors. For example, 1 Quality backlink can outrank your competitor and you can steal his position from SE. You just need to follow the right way.

What is considered Quantity backlinks history?

Now that's a good question because it shows that you want to drop the idea of quantity backlinks and want to learn the actual technique for quick ranking on search engines.

Quantity backlinks history is the result of hunting random backlinks where a person doesn't care about the quality of sites like spam score provided by MOZ and other indicators such as DA and CA etc, to find out if the site is really good. He keeps hunting for the sites which are of no real use (i.e no-follow backlink). At this point, you might be scratching your head on what is a no-follow backlink, right? But I will answer this in my next post.

Qualitative backlinks history:

If you become successful in attracting just a single backlink from big authority sites like HuffingtonPost or wired etc, then you'll see a massive increase in your ranking.

Quality backlink history refers to the principle and that's: "If it is easier to get a link from the site then it is most probably a useless backlink." Quality backlinks can't be acquired easily. It takes time and efforts to attract such a valuable backlink.

How should we build the link profile then?

There are many ways to do that. The first way is to increase the chances by sharing your posts/pages on social media with a large number of audience and make sure that you don't spam your link anywhere. Some SEO gurus will suggest that you build backlinks by commenting on blogs but trust me! you won't find such a valuable blog so easily because most blogs now pass a no-follow link for commenting stuff which doesn't really help your page to rank. However, building and leveraging no-follow links with some high-quality do-follow is a good practice. We'll talk about it in detail in my coming tutorials.

Important Info:

This post is aimed to introduce the two types of backlinks history. In my upcoming post, we will discuss the types of backlinks and what role they play in ranking your site. But as I said several times before, Off-Page SEO is something which is not under your complete control. Though you have control over certain things. But you don't have a full control. But there's a way to be successful and that's how I am doing SEO (i.e by following the right way), and you should do the same.
