Intel Screwed Again

The Intel processors that have been running in the last 10 years have a serious weakness that should be resolved quickly. Because it can't be solved at the microcode level in the processor, the software update will decrease the processor's speed from 5 to 30 percent (in many cases 50), depending upon the specific model and operating system (Windows, Linux, MacOS).

The exact details of the bug are not yet published, but we can learn a lot about them from the Linux service code (this is publicized but without comments) and developer announcements. This is a trouble with access to kernel memory, to which regular programs should under no conditions have access because this opens the possibility of numerous attacks. The program update will, as a result, introduce KPTI (kernel page table isolation) to move the kernel somewhere else. This requires CPU cycles when changing between normal programs and kernel, so there will be decelerations as mentioned, up to 50%!!!!

AMD processors don't have the mentioned weakness, so AMD explicitly wrote that installation fixes don't recommend.

For Intel processors running Linux, slowdowns are detectable. How will Microsoft react, we'll see next days when the patch comes out.
