The idea is not new. YouTube has a nine-year-old video on how to scream on disks affect latency when writing data in a data center.
Argentine scientists have already shown this year that this could be reversed, meaning that disks can be used as primitive microphones. With the loud noise, disks can get resonance, which unintentionally happened in Romania last year.
Now researchers from Princeton and Purdue University have demonstrated how disks could be disabled by noise. They quickly found optimal frequencies and shut down all Western Digital discs. Constant noise can completely stop the normal operation of the discs. If the attack lasts for a long period of time, it's necessary to restart the system.
They have shown that, as an example, CCTV control systems can be disabled this way and no longer record video.
