Mute (Netflix film): Had some moments but mostly it's pretty bad

in #scifi5 years ago

I got excited about this one because the trailer was very well done but also told very little about the movie. Now that I've watched all two hours of it I can also say that the movie doesn't tell very much about the movie.

Set at some point in the future in Germany, this movie has another one of those overlying concepts that decades from now the world has pretty much devolved into a lawless playground that is overly sexualized and it doesn't seem to contain very much in the way of law enforcement.

The entire film kind of sets up as being interesting because Leo (played by Alexander Gustaffson i mean Skarsgård) can not speak because of an injury he suffered as a child. He works with and is romantically involved with a woman at the bar he works at and one day just disappears without a trace.

The story (and I don't know if this is intentional or not) doesn't really give us any real ideas as to where she might have gone and Leo has to piece this together despite not being able to speak and the fact that he isn't terribly tough.

This all happens (very slowly) in the first 20 minutes or so and then we are treated to about an hour and 20 minutes of seemingly unrelated content that eventually leads us to a conclusion. By the time you FINALLY get there not only are you not surprised but you end up having a "get on with it already" attitude about the entire plot.

One good aspect of this movie is Paul Rudd's performance in it. He comes across quite convincingly as a no-nonsense tough guy that can handle himself in almost any situation. I think he probably bulked up for the role a bit because he isn't a big dude in real life, but he is quite intimidating at many points in time during the film. I don't feel as though Hollywood has effectively used Alexander Skarsgård since True Blood, but his involvement in True Blood may actually be the reason why they haven't used him.

Slow moving and disjointed, I can't really say I enjoyed this film so much as I endured it hoping that something magical was going to happen towards the end. It started to finally wrap up in the last 20 minutes or so. Unfortunately, the ending is so telegraphed that by the time the big reveal happens you aren't surprised and also don't really care. The acting is solid on the part of nearly everyone involved but overall the film just fails to live up to the hype that the trailer instilled in me.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give Mute the overall score of....

I've heard that there is a reason why many movies end up being a netflix film, that the main studios turn them down because they don't see potential on it to be successful. I don't know if this is the case here but your review tells me that the movie is a mess regardless the good interpretations.

I agree with you. Alexander Skarsgard took the whole brunt of himself, who is trying with all his might to stretch the film on his shoulders and, in principle, to achieve this. Skarsgard perfectly got into the image of his character and really tried throughout the tape. It should be noted Paul Rudd, who appeared on the screen in a very unusual way, and in tandem with Justin Theroux, created a duet of perhaps the most charismatic characters of the tape. Even much more interesting than the main character of the tape. The rest, alas, there is nothing to note. Especially Seyneb Saleh.
Mute is one of the main and painful disappointments of the year for me personally. The picture promised and had all the chances to become a gorgeous, fantastic cyberpunk with a juicy picture, an indescribable atmosphere and a deep plot. But it turns out to be frankly boring, tedious and empty work.

yeah, i was extremely let down as well. Shame that it was terrible because I really wanted it to not be.

It's disappointing when you make high expectations of a movie and then fall into the sadness that you wasted your time. In Netflix you can find everything. I've almost seen this movie several times, but for a strange reason I choose another one. The last time it happened to me I changed "Mute" for "Girl" a movie with a controversial and very deep theme, now reading your review I feel that I won with my last minute choice. I don't know if you've seen this movie, @gooddream, I recommend it. Anyway, at some point I will see "Mute", because I have it on my list. Thanks for your extraordinary reviews, happy day, @gooddream.

I was going to say, with that cast, it is a little hard to believe that it sucked so much. I guess if the story isn't there though you can't really save it with good acting. I haven't seen anything about this one yet, I will just take your advice and skip it. Maybe Rudd's leftover bulk was from playing Antman!

I think the way you see the movies and the samples is something interesting. I read a lot of philosophy and I think that movies apart from literature show a lot of philosophical ideas, really thank you for always showing us good stories. Good job buddy.

Hey brother! This film is certainly no Scar Face!.....judging by your article here. Probably not for me. I actually just watched Scarface last night with a girl I'm seeing here in Bali. She never heard of the movie, and really enjoyed. I forget what great movie that was. You've surely seen it right? The way the story moves along with the acting and action. No wonder it's such a classic.

Anyway, time is short, I'm leaving to Athens (from Bali) in less than 24hrs; but I just wanted to stop by and thank you for supporting my efforts here with my blog. Means a lot to me. And you are doing a great job yourself, continually posting quality content. Keep up the great work and next time I'll be writing from Greece........or Bulgaria ;)

Have a great evening. -Dan

Oh yes Scarface is one of the best Movies. I looked Scarface maybe 3 times because i liked it so much. Mute is a annoying movie.
