Running Resumed

in #running6 years ago (edited)

I haven’t been running for a while. One excuse after another is the reason; my calf keeps failing me, I can’t get out of bed, I’m too tired, I’m not built to be a runner, the list goes on and on.

I promised @bingbabe that when I finish my current contract, and when we get back from Scotland that every morning at 6am, I will be up and running with her, so the rustling of my shoulder and the words, ‘come on lazy get up’, were not unexpected but also not so welcome to a slumbering @slobberchops this morning.

I decided to weigh myself on arising and was shocked to see the scales at just over 12 stones. I have never been so heavy! It is time to take decisive action.

It was a lovely day, sun shining and not so hot at this early hour. We decided to avoid the roads as much as possible and run some trails.

Just over 4km resulted in a terrible time of 32 minutes. I did a park run last year limping over the finish line in the same time, while doing 5k. I can only improve on this. My calf felt fine today, with no sign of that familiar pain that I was getting a few weeks ago on my last attempted run.

The number of times I stopped was just not funny today. Out of breath, and legs aching. I can only berate myself for getting into such a state of unfitness.

Tomorrow we will be playing Tennis, another sport I used to interact with 3 times a week. There are some municipal courts close to our house and at 6am I can guarantee they will be empty.

@bingbabe is not a competent player, and we use practice balls and but she can keep the ball going long enough for us both to have some kind of workout.

I’m hoping I can improve my running times, and decrease the number of stops I make. Feeling all this fat around my middle is a great incentive to get up and keep running.

I hope you're warming up n down. I snapped my achilles tendon playing badminton when I was 40. I'm much more careful these days.

I haven't done so far, my tyrant of a wife doesn't give me chance.

Hehe...don't say you weren't warned ;)

I haven't done so

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

I know the feeling.. i am in pretty terrible shape as well so i started running again about a month ago.. I must be getting old because my knees started aching pretty bad so I cant run daily anymore, only about 3 times a week.. However on the days that I run I also usually skip a meal or 2 also and then I really feel like I'm actually loosing weight, not just waisting my time lol.. fasting is amazing for the body and so underrated. If u really wanna loose weight fast you should look into it.. 😉

I tend to get migraines if I don't feed the body when its want to be sustained. Annoying, but it always lets me know.

Awesome for you! Keep it up! I think above all as long as you have the motivation, you should be good. That is something that I am lacking. I am sore just from mowing the lawn yesterday. I don't even want to think about running!

Wow- I'm impressed. Stop beating yourself up that you stopped previously, and for whatever you've not managed to do before and give yourself a pat on the back for getting up and out there. You did it- and it doesn't matter how many times you had to stop as you went along. You were still out there at 6am which is more than I can say for myself! That top photo is beautiful- looked really peaceful.

I'm terrible at sticking to exercise, and me and running don't mix for some reason- I always get this pain in my jaw and throat when I run which lasts for days... but you've inspired me to get on with some zumba... I could do with losing the tyre around my waist too ;) E x

I'll be combining it with Tennis, just for some variety. I'm getting over a long term injury that my body appears to have fixed itself. The doctors have not been of any help, paid or NHS.

Hmm - I've found that with the docs for various long-term injury and illness issues. If there's any way you can support yourself and manage it without their help, it has to be a positive thing! P.S sounds like I'm a bit like your other half with tennis ;)

I used to run regularly. I got to love it after a while, but I stopped when I developed an underactive thyroid - I just couldn't sustain exercise for long. That's when I started long-distance walking instead, and then hillwalking.
I used to run in 10km events, which really excited my competitive spirit. I also did a half marathon. My tip is to put on your favourite music on headphones when you run (turn it off when you cross the road!) A good tune can honestly make you run faster!
Re-intermittent fasting, I lost 31lbs on the 5:2 diet last year (2 x 500 calorie fast days a week). The headaches can be due to lack of salt - when fasting I always eat some sea salt and drink water.

500 calories a day is a tough achievement. I have lost weight in the past on a 1500 calorie per day target.

At the time I was playing regular Tennis and that made the difference. Ill take your tip about Salt and Water though, thanks.

Ah - 600 for men. And you can eat all you want the next day.

Congrats on getting up and out @slobberchops. I was dead impressed you'd gone from 0 to 4K but then I read the bit below the image and see that you stopped along the way. 😂

I'm still impressed. Getting up at 6 a.m. is a feat in itself as far as I'm concerned, yet alone going running. Well done! #sm

I stopped many times, 1km without stopping is about my limit, but that was before I got very unfit. Tennis tomorrow at 7am.

Blimey. You're really going for it @slobberchops. Don't burn yourself out! 😂
