Rickysphotochallenge Week 12 entry #1 - Abstract - Icy sun.

To be honest, I am not much into abstracts, maybe because I am too pragmatic or else because I lack imagination (I have a feeling that @pixelfan will love the challenge of this week ;-) .) Scrolling trough my library I came across this image which I had forgotten about.

This photo was by no means a gimmy. It was a clear and cold morning and I was strolling trough one of little forest that still exist in Belgium and the sun was comin' up which makes the temperature a little more bearable, if still ice cold. Thick ice had set on the tree branches that night and looking at the sun and the ice I came up with this idea.

While the idea was simple, the execution was not. First I had to find a twig with ice that also was exposed to the sun. Second it had to be a the right hight as to align the sun. And then came the part of making the photo. Focusing and adjusting exposure parameters with gloves on was not simple, as even with gloves on my fingers were near senseless. Focusing was a nightmare as depth of field was none (to get the sun as a circle I had to shoot wide open) with a macro ratio close to 2:1.

The lens used (an old Olympus OM Zuiko 50 f/3.5 macro is not the sharpest but in the end I managed.

Olympus E-30 + extension tubes + Zuiko OM 50 macro, f/3.5, 1/8000s, ISO 200.
