In this article I want to tell you about the story of an extraordinary woman, who thanks to her genius and insight, ended up being the first "undercover" female Pope! This happened more than 1,000 years ago...

As you probably already know, women aren’t allowed to take official ranks inside the Vatican (which I find very absurd and outdated), and much less to take in the role of the leader, the Pope. So that you can realize this is not the kind of story the Church is going to tell, in fact everything indicate that they have dije an extraordinary job trying to hide this information.

Don’t you think institutions like the Vatican should release their secret documents to the public? (The same question goes to the US government and their supposed UFO files, but this is a topic for another post)

Specifically, the evidence points towards the fact that Joan exercised her mandate between the years 855 and 857 of our era, but under very peculiar circumstances.

How could this be possible

First we need to try to understand how were things around that time, and understand that under Christian eyes in that date (and by mandate of the Church itself), women were totally dominated by men, and they had no rights to basic education which means they didn’t know how to read or write. They were totally dependent of men, and it was designed like this to keep them controlled by the men of that era.

But as we all know, from time to time, extraordinary people are born that no matter what negative circumstances they encounter, with a lot of strength and sacrifice they manage to overcome any obstacle and thrive. They leave defective social models behind and live a life more advanced than regular people.

Because of this, there must have been a lot of women that managed to subsist while pretending to be men, and according to this legend, Jone was one of the best doing this.

As time went by, and thanks to her incredible intelligence, Jone learnt several languages when she was little. She received an education even better than most men at the time and managed to impress everyone who crossed her steps towards her wisdom. It’s fair to say she was extremely smart. She eventually became a notorious figure in Rome, recognize by her advances medical abilities and knowledge, and this eventually allowed her to get close with the Vatican and forge partnerships there since she managed to safe the life of another Pope. She ended up getting involved in the Papal culture, and thanks to several events, she found herself a way to being named the Pope.

Under her short mandate, the Church was modernized like never before, and her popularity was like no Pope before her, nevertheless, this story didn’t have a happy ending because eventually it was discovered the fact that she wasn’t a men and was in fact, a women (this was discovered because she got herself pregnant). She die for unknown causes that ranges from dying while giving birth, to more extreme ones like being stoned to death as a punishment).

Could she really be murdered for the simple reason of being a woman?

After so many centuries is difficult, if not impossible to prove it. But when religious beliefs are taken to a extreme level people can do all sort of crazy things, like murdering innocent people.

What we can know for a fact, is that her enemies inside the Vatican started to act as soon as they could, they wrote a book about all the Popes there have been and made sure to avoid mentioning a single word about her with the hope of erasing her name from history.

But this wasn’t enough to erase her, because there are evidence this story is real not only on medieval writings but also on the Vatican itself.

It happens that in a museum inside the Vatican, there is a very peculiar chair that looks like just a regular chair but it is not. This chair is called the “sella stercoraria”, and it has the particularity of having a hole where the genitals would be when the Pope sits in there.

This chair was created just after the events with Pope Joan, and it was designed that way to be used during the inauguration of the new Pope, where not as part of the ceremony’s an assigned priest was in charge of looking under the chair to make sure that the Pope’s sex was in fact, male.

If the Vatican decided to go this far in order to make sure the Pope’s gender was the “correct” one, we can only wonder if the Pope Joan history was in fact, true. Personally, I would like to believe it was true, because it would be another beautiful example of how humans beings are able to overcome and thrive even when the circumstances are almost the worst possible.

There was even a movie about this story released in 2009 and I recommend you to watch it in case you wish to learn more about this incredible woman. This movie in my opinion was spectacular, super interesting and a nice insight into the life of this historical figure.
