Zero-to-hero programming: does it work?

in #programming6 years ago (edited)

I've been hearing more and more of the term "zero to hero" being promoted mainly in training and programming courses.

From Wiktionary:

(idiomatic) To change from a negative to a positive outcome; to improve one's fortunes significantly. (idiomatic) To become very popular after being unpopular.

Notice the words significantly and very being used, meaning to go from one extreme to another.

Frankly, I'm a little tired of hearing these claims, especially when these training involve only a couple of days training or less, and especially if this involves learning how to program. The issue with this zero-to-hero promise, in my point of view, is primarily because this gives false hope that once you go through the short training, you'll be up and running to building a full-fledged app from what you learned.

You don't call a weekend programming course as "zero to hero" if it's merely introduction to programming, or a syllabus on how to get started. There's nothing "heroic" about it.
The only people who do end up becoming "heroes" are in fact those who already have basic knowledge in coding and algorithm, and simply need some added focus and motivation by attending groups and learn together. And those who truly succeed going forward with these basic knowledge are the self-learners with their own proven learning methods and discipline.

I've seen and received testimonies from those who did and are able to code complete and working apps after doing a "crash course" in programming. Guess how long these courses last? For Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre's case, it's 9 weeks (approximately 2 months) for web development and 6 grueling months for app development. In the mean time, the most popular online coding bootcamp, freeCodeCamp, takes about 3 months to complete on average.

MONTHS.

So if you have the inclination to learn coding, then good for you. Do remember that practice makes perfect, and practice takes time and effort, just as it is with any other skill you come across.

Programming seems very difficult to me.
But now a day programmers are shining their future.

Learning programming has its benefits. The best way to learn coding is to have a purpose -- what problem are you trying to solve with your skill? If it's merely to make money, it's best that you run a business instead.

It's even wonkier when your business is programming

At that stage, you had better already know how to code!
