If you're not paying for it, you're not the customer.

Well.. technically you're still the customer.

Methods of payment (aside from money) include:

  • time
  • privacy
  • attention
  • personal data
  • engaging interactions
  • private messages and calls
  • permission to be under surveillance
  • pig meat.

All these things have value . . . and not because Mrs Bucket wants all the gossip from around the world.

It might say "free" but you might not realise the value of what you're paying with until somebody uses it for profit

• Imagine seeing an advertisement in a magazine with a photograph taken by you.
• The same amount of time you spent scrolling mindlessly may have been spent by somebody else to learn to develop the app that engrosses you.
• Your smoking habits are obviously valuable to somebody who would provide you with life assurance. But that also makes that information valuable to you to keep private!

Before you pay for that "free" service, consider the worth of the "private" video call you're about to make.

Google keeps asking you for tips and reviews ?

Imagine some alternate universe where the value provided by a network actually got returned to the network providing it . . .

If attention is what they want . . .

Then the service you get for free needs to be able to retain your attention by keeping you numbly engrossed or satisfied. If you're not you can withdraw your attention and stop paying it.

That makes you the customer!

Always beware of the terms of service.

The phrase was used prior to the internet boom of the late 90s. For example, you can see nearly that exact phrase (and certainly the exact principle) . It's referencing a short film titled Television Delivers People, made in 1973. For my money, that film probably deserves the credit for crystallizing the concept of "you are the product."

Whoo, I think i am in steeming in one.

thank you& hope you've recovered!

I understand what youre saying but I think it is worth it sometime. As long as theyre clear about what youre getting and how youre getting it. Its worse when the free service contains hidden viruses though.

Of course. My objective isn't to tell people to log out of google and throw away your phones, just to realise what the price is when something says "free"

O yeah for sure haha. There is almost always strings at some point.

There are no free lunches in this world. Nice write up.

"If you're not paying for it, you're not the customer." No, you're the product ^^

That's what they say.

Sadly most people don't seem to care. That, and they probably don't realize how much they can actually do with your information...

Priceless and so true....time, privacy, attention, personal data, engaging, interactions...all forms of payments, hahahahahaha...creative piece, I enjoyed this one...you can add likes/ upvotes to that list, forms of payment

Nothing is completely free in this world, you're always paying with something. This is an awesome post @beanz (thank you @clayboyn for resteeming this). For me my privacy is more valuable than my time in many cases, seeing the "hidden fees" gets washed away by the statement that it's free. I copied down your private list of currencies, so I can remind myself how I pay for things.

@shello

I've tried to explain this to the Facebook junkies I know, but they don't seem to get it...

Good points @beanz and thank you for the support @beanz!
Here's a little token of my appreciation, tip!
