People still don't know what a third world country is??

in #poverty6 years ago (edited)

I wanted to talk a little about a subject that came up on facebook. I only now go on facebook to keep in contact with friends and family back in the UK. I am friends with a woman who uses facebook, who lives in Bulgaria and she is from the uk also. I decided also to publish a video about it because I wanted to express my opinion on the matter, you can view it above if you wish to.

The whole meat argument

So you are guessing by the title that she posted up about the cull of her pig. That she had reared for the purpose of slaughtering. This is the norm in Bulgaria, whilst some people do not agree it is still the norm in Bulgaria, and has been for many many years.

Now before I get into what happened I want to say that I too wondered why in this day that people do this still when meat is freely available here. I had a long discussion with my neighbour about this, and he said one of the reasons they rear the meat for slaughter is because they know what the animal has been given both nutritionally and chemically. I never thought of it like that before, that the meat you eat you may not know what medicine the animal has been given, or if it has been given chemicals to genetically modify the animal for example to make it bigger to produce more meat. (In my opinion that is far more cruel, than hand rearing and raising.)

This is not what I actually want to talk about though.

No the comment that I want to talk about is from a friend of the lady who posted up on facebook and something she said. This was the comment she made and I quote.

I don’t think that you have offended anyone Claire it’s probably more shocking than anything as we aren’t use to the 3rd world ways of doing things here.

Needless to say that the person who posted up corrected her that Bulgaria is not a third world country. But this woman who when I looked at her profile, works for the NHS and is supposedly educated refused to believe this information. I mean WTF!! Even when someone, had done a quick google search and showed her the evidence she still believed she was right.

There and then I knew, that not only does facebook have a problem with censorship, it’s apparent someone will report this post in due course, I hope they allow it to remain. But that how much people are influenced by such stupid comments and fake news from arrogant people, who do not have the slightest notion about society in the world today. So I want to educate people right now on what the definition of a third world country is.

Here is a quote from nationsonline.org

What makes a nation third world?
Despite ever evolving definitions, the concept of the third world serves to identify countries that suffer from high infant mortality, low economic development, high levels of poverty, low utilization of natural resources, and heavy dependence on industrialized nations. These are the developing and technologically less advanced nations of Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Latin America. Third world nations tend to have economies dependent on the developed countries and are generally characterized as poor with unstable governments and having high rates of population growth, illiteracy, and disease. A key factor is the lack of a middle class — with impoverished millions in a vast lower economic class and a very small elite upper class controlling the country's wealth and resources. Most third world nations also have a very large foreign debt.

So you will see readers that to define a third world country would mean such things as.

  • High Population.

  • Famine

  • Disease (Lack of medicine)

  • Poverty (huge debt to foreign countries)

I am happy to say that Bulgaria does not full under such categories and is certainly not a third world country. My god what are they teaching in schools I wonder. Bulgaria has no high debts and it does not suffer with hunger. Poverty is only an issue in some areas but remember that the glorious UK also has problems with poverty, I did not see this lady comment about that.

So what class is Bulgaria?

According to investopedia this is the definition of a second world country.

DEFINITION of 'Second World'

  1. ‘Second world’ includes a country that was once controlled by the Soviet Union. Second World countries were centrally planned economies and one-party states. The use of ‘Second World’ to refer to Soviet countries largely fell out of use in the early 1990s, shortly after the end of the Cold War.
  2. ‘Second world’ also covers a country that is more stable and more developed than a third-world country but less-stable and less-developed than a first-world country. Examples of second-world countries by this definition include almost all of Latin and South America, Turkey, Thailand, South Africa, and many others. Investors sometimes refer to second-world countries that appear to be headed toward first-world status as "emerging markets.”

I think its safe to say there is a problem.

And that problem is that people are actively becoming involved in conversations and sharing more and more stuff that is not actually true. Regular social media is literally poisoning what people are learning today, and that is having a negative effect on society.
I want to end this saying that I put a comment on at the end of the post stating what I had observed and why I no long post on facebook, these are classic examples. I invited the poster to consider steemit, I can only hope they may join in the future.

Thank you for reading.

I hate to break it too you but the United States is a third world country at this point in time based on the description given, we have the majority of the conditions present right now to give us third world status.
I would say we are probably one of the best third world countries but we will continue to work our way down by increasing our debt and eliminating the middle class totally. We already have an unstable government as evidenced by our current congress and president.
The very small elite class already exists, can you say 1%? and disease will continue to grow, not from lack of vaccinations, but rather the lack of money to pay for the health care treatment. Plenty of people have the insurance and can't afford to use it because of the high co-pays and deductibles.
We are there already at third world status, damn near half the country's population is on government food stamp programs. That should be enough right there, people need to quit looking at the USA for what it once was, and look at it for what it really is today.
I ditch my rose colored glasses years ago, the picture is clear as day in black and white.

I do see where you are coming from, I watched a video recently on DTube about a woman who has been diagnosed with MS. She buys her meds from iran because they are cheaper, but her consultant insists that she has to buy shots which for 12 cost her 3000 dollars a time, and if she does not then her insurance is invalidated. On top of that she pays $1100 dollars a month on insurance, how can someone even afford that, and what is the point of insurance when medicine is so high???

There are thousands of stories just like hers that are going untold, I am serious when I say we are a third world country. At one time we were the country that everyone looked too, and several people would do whatever they needed to do to get here, it isn't all it is cracked up to be now; if people take a good honest look at what is going on here.

Here's a concrete example! I used to get my meds for Lyme disease from Sri Lanka, Romania, Ecuador, Panama and India because they were way cheaper than I had to pay here, which was about $4K per month. My specialist was in U.S. so I had to cross the border to go see my doctor, because the Canadian doctors were convinced there was no Lyme in Canada and that the ticks were waiving their passport to the custom agents when crossing the border! My insurance did not cover the cost cause the meds were prescribed by a U.S. specialist, not a Canadian.

You speak some serious truth bud. I see this even with some of my very intelligent friends, I'm just lucky that they are open-minded and humble enough to change their perspective.

Since I joined Steemit, I realised that the news and information from this platform make more plausible sense than any other. That depends on how credible the author is of course, but usually, I can find sources to back things up.

I hope that in time the media outlets crumble. It's not likely anytime soon but I believe that once they start using blockchain technology they'll be more cautious about what they post. Then again, maybe they'll still not give a fuck.

I agree, the UK is in a bad state of poverty. Well... anywhere above London...

People these days are far too trusting the other day someone who I always considered very educational posted something on facebook which was fake news from like 6 years ago. So glad I don't hardly go on now.

Not all third world country are really poor. Most of them are resource rich, some are even richer than the first world country. The only problem is the corrupt goverment official that pocket and steal all the money from the citizen. Best example is the Philippines, all goverment official here is corrupt.

Then it is not a third world country in my opinion I spoke to someone from nigeria with the same problem as you, and we agreed this would be classed as 2nd world.
That is the point I am trying to make in the post.

Nah, Nigeria is a 3rd world country until the government stops reaping the masses. The correct thing to say is that It has the potential to be a 2nd world country.

Coming from a Third world country in Asia I have to agree with your definition on our status although the Philippines boast of a high literarcy rate of around 95% I believe and an above average command of the English language thus a lot of callcenters from the US, Britain and Australia are located here.

It is interested what you said about 2nd world countries and I am a bit of a history buff especially with the Cold War and Soviet Union fascinated me.

Well that is one of the reasons why I left Facebook, All the toxicity and fake news just makes me shake my head.

As for that person it is hard to budge someone who is set on their beliefs.

I am thus inclined to wonder if your country would be defined as third world, someone just mentioned about the corruption with means if there is ready money available by what ever means... resources etc.
And wonder if you fall under the same category as 2nd world particularly when it talks about emerging markets, is the phillipinnes not under this banner?

Good article, I agree. That woman sounds like an idiot. In fact many Americans would agree with her. But USA is in the process of moving from first world to second world imo. In fact many of the markers for third world will soon be there if things continue as they have for the last 50 years - lack of middle class, high infant mortality, disease (thanks to anti-vaxxers and expensive health care), illiteracy, pretty much everything except over-population.

Yes I agree with you the tables are turning for sure the new powers will be the likes of India and china whoa are advancing well ahead.

excellent publication @crazybgadventure I liked how to clarify the definition of each one, bansandose in this post, it can be said that Venezuela is a third world country, based on the current situation of the country? I hope you take into account my humble comment and you can answer that question

Hi @proelite thanks for posting well as I say regarding third world you have to look at all the aspects so is your country heavily in debt? Does your country suffer famine? Are their any epidemics or is there a lack of medicine if the answer is yes to these then your country would be deemed as a third world country.

To answer this:

  • Venezuela have a high debt that they are avoiding since 3 years ago and it's for the low economic incoming that are reaching in all sectors and govermment created a campaing called "Economic War" that is "promoted by US Imperialism".

  • There is a high lack of medicine, even the oposition side of goverment are trying to call a human help in some international consuls and govermment are rejecting it because they won't accept that their politic are failing and people are dying in hospitals and private clinics.

  • Famine is the first thing that are strangling venezuelans. For the low production and lack in economy by a country who only have incoming from petroleum and none of the renewable resourses, this depends on food imports to supply a country and it get really expensive for the minimum wage that people are trying to get on their work. In Venezuela a minimum wage have a value of 4$ in black market. And we have reference of black market since govermment don't allow USD distribution since some years ago and the recent sanctions of the USA's government.

We really dream to get most of the latin american countries into a "First World Countries", but it really hard if the CULTURE and EDUCATION of the citizens keep in the low quality.

Thank you very much for taking into account my humble comment, regarding your answer, I can say that if venezuela is going through that, and I appreciate that you have answered my question

No problem your comment is as justified as anyone on the platform, my friend from the look of it you are new to the platform I wish you every success. Also if you are looking for support I can recommend a room called Voices of the underground you might want to check out and connect with fellow venezuelans.

wuao if I would like you to give me some support because as you say I am new to the platform

Very interesting and well put comment so this would be a case of a third world country. And I am sincerely sorry for what you are going through my friend. Together with steemit we will win, and we will change the world.
There is no room for poverty, famine or disease there does not need to be.

Thanks friend for those nice words, and if you're right!

Maybe Facebook is used by people who become more false and brainless. But Steemit also has the same problem with people who have no idea how to use it. It is our duty to teach them patiently and we may have to do the same in any social network.

Maybe there should be a "Fourth world" category as "Third World" seems to mean anything less than the most modern metropolitan cities?
