Opinion Poll - Should We Move Forward With This?

Introduction

About a week ago, I wrote a #growth-ideas post to know what people thought of a decentralized crowdfunding platform where the community decide which projects should get funded. You can read it here.

Yesterday @trafalgar outlined perfectly where the funds would come from in Fixing a Problem in the Economics of Steemit.

Then the amazing @good-karma came out with his Growth Proposals: Steempoll making it possible to have a decentralized consensus user interface for steemit.

I am super pumped by the idea. But...am I alone?

What is the poll about?

@trafalgar proposal goes as follow:

Proposal

I think we should use this 15% of new Steem elsewhere. I propose that most of this amount gets added to the reward pool while some of it will go into a fund, to further support certain projects. The new distribution will look like this:

  • 85% goes to rewards
  • 10% goes to witnesses
  • 5% goes to a development/marketing/projects fund

The Poll

So what do you think of this idea?

What is withness?

I would use something like that, as a developer i have many ideas and projects id love to do. Currently i am doing one and this would help a lot since i have to develop everything on my own. Here is my post about my current project: https://steemit.com/growth-ideas/@thedegensloth/idea-steem-powered-micro-blogging. Though i do think it should be an option when choosing payment option to choose if you want to contribute some on that post. Its not something that should really be forced on users.

I'm strongly against this idea. Let's stop playing around with the fundamentals of the platform. Things are fine the way they are.

finally, words of wisdom indeed

So you are okay with a pointless 1.5% APR on SteemPower?

Yes.

Developers don't like tweaking stuff over and over again. It's a pointless 1.5% like you said so why even spend the time and energy reallocating those funds?

Because it means about $800,000 a year wasted in an incentive that nobody cares about?

I care very much about the 1.5% per year, and the more stem power someone holds, the more that person should care about it

... an incentive that nobody cares about.

Would a 1.5% interest per year deter you from selling your steem? Be honest please.

For me 1.5% is a lot. So, yes, it would, and has, deterred me.

My point is that we're not fixing any problem. Introducing new code, especially blockchain level, for no good cause seems risky and not well thought out.

Are you implying that long-term holders should be penalized by removing the 1.5% interest p/year? If anything, we should do the opposite.

The daily volatility is 4x the benefits of holding on a measly 1.5%. Also I make more in curations with my SP than I do with that 1.5%. To top it off, there is a huge opportunity cost for not using that $800,000 to better use. Who cares for that 1.5% if you can use that money to increase the value of the the network by more than 1.5% by using that fund to do advertising and project development?

It looks like there is a clear path forward.

And the best part is, it can be done step by step. Start with Steempolls for coordination. See how the community judges project quality, and if that aligns with our vision of spending resources. And if there's utility to modify the economics in that small way, raise the possibility of changing it. It seems to me like we can have transparent and deliberate conversations about this, as a community.

To be clear though, if this change was made the resources should go to projects on the Steem Blockchain generally, not necessarily to Steemit Inc. One thing is clear for us: We want more businesses and projects on Steem.

no (for balance to all the yes responses)

More rewards for posts is important in my observation. As for bounties go, careful attention should be payed to how deliverables are verified. Wide community support should be required for changes that are utilizing the ~5 block reward. Other proposals can attract funding in a crowdsource model and require less overall support.

I fully agree the building of a funding pot to support development of great tools! I also agree to less funds to witnesses, I think it is now something like 50% of all the new Steem to witnesses. Yes, witnesses spend time and money running their nodes, and work with the community and Steemit Inc to progress Steemit and Steem, but without analysing the rewards witnesses get, I think 50% is quite lot compared to all we Steemians who also spend a lot of time developing the community.

Than again, if my numbers are not correct, please let me know. At this stage, I do not have any solid percentages in mind to re-distribute to development, witnesses and the community at large (reward pools). That requires a better understanding of the value minted everyday, and distributed everyday. If you have these numbers, please post them here.

I do agree to community voted re-distribution. Maybe we can have a 1-2-1 vote implemented for such polls, so the few with majority of the vote power will not be able to determine the outcome.

Strongly opposed. We have a path of financial changes that has been agreed upon and is in the works. We don't need to suddenly shift pathes right now.

Crowdfunding platform would be awesome as with single post you are not really able to fund a project. So the only way is to actually post frequently enough so people would see the post and vote.

I think this is really a huge change. Maybe community should have their steem for yourself and they should choose by themselves what they want to fund and what they dont.

Because if you give 5% to a fund, who will be in charge of what will be funded and what not? People? But if people, why dont you just let people have their steemit and choose by themselves?

I believe in this idea. We need to push for growth.
