African Nations Abandoning Agriculture And Their Reliance On Natural Resources - The Source Of The Ever-growing Problems In Africa
Until the beginning of the 20th century, people of African nations had been living a relatively stable agricultural life. People were then producing food and livestock in the same way as their ancestors. The methods of production were well adopted to the environment, involving minimum risks and involving adequate food and agricultural products to meet people's needs.

Since the beginning of this century, the relative equilibrium of Africa's agricultural societies has been disturbed due to colonization and consequent integration of the people in a wider world society and economy. Populations have expanded, traditional systems of land use have broken down and urbanization has grown. This has increased the demand for food and agricultural raw materials which the tradition system have not been able to satisfy.
Way out
Soil and pasture resources are now under great stress. Increased rural populations need employment through more efficient use of agricultural resources. To achieve this, and prevent rural-urban migration, farmers must be given access to agricultural education and the necessary technologies and markets.

Advice and assistance to farmers to help them improve their methods of production, marketing and home living is called Agricultural Extension. Extension is also designed to achieve a balanced social and economic development in farming communities.
Extension is a non-formal education for farmers and their families as a means of attaining higher standards of living for themselves. Thus the purpose of agricultural extension is to spread useful and practical knowledge to farmers, with a view to raising their mental and technical skills to make their contributions to national economic and social development more successful.
