My first impression of a DJI Spark drone / PL: Moje pierwsze odczucia z dronem DJI Spark

For some time from now on I was trying to experiment with drones. Some time ago I watched quite promising advertising materials from DJI, but I completely forgot about the topic. Yet the last conversation on the #polish channel reminded me of this nice devices. I read some reviews on the web, watched several videos and found it worth a try. I'm not an expert on drones, I'm just starting to play with them and decided to bet on something small, proven, with nice image stabilisation and collision detection. DJI Spark was perfect match for this.

The drone reached me somehow two days ago, but because the whole weekend was raining - only today I had a chance to launch it. The procedure of firing it for the first time is not particularly complicated, but you get the impression that it is still a more dangerous toy than a remote-controlled car. Several times they warn you that you must not fly in many places, that you have to watch out for people, objects, the ground and generally everything around. I felt a bit like launching some space shuttle, yet the most important thing is that it worked!

The drone can be operated in three modes - either from the cell itself, using cells with a special controller, or using gestures. I have not tried the gestures so far and I'm not going to do it because with them you can not do Video (at least in theory, although I saw that you can work around this problem - I think I will still test it in future). The mode on the mobile itself seems ideal for using automatic modes. The last mode with a special controller is ideal if you want to have a little longer range and affect the real framing. I mainly played with the latter.

Flying it up is harder than it seemed to me at first and I will definitely need some practice. You can fly on one battery for about 10 minutes, so I'm already planning to buy two more. I think If I would have some more skills I could get quite good shots within that time at any location. You can charge the batteries using microUSB so you can fill it up using the normal charger for Android phone, from the car with USB output, or from PowerBank. A huge surprise for me is the fact that the batteries need to be charged by the drone (the battery has no USB output) and without an additional accessory you can not charge the battery itself. What I suspect can be quite tiring with a few batteries - when you would like to fly on another battery when you load the first one. Therefore, when I buy more batteries I have to think about the charger.

The drone is shooting movies in FullHD at 30fps, maybe it's not that great for professional usage, but still it is a good material. Stabilisation works so far so there is no need to trim the film. It is quite a noisy device - I can not imagine shooting a wedding for example. The collision detector works quite well, only it is placed on the front of the drone, so if you fly sideways or backwards, keep in mind that the drone does not see anything.

The included software is quite transparent, although as I wrote earlier - at first glance, it seems quite complicated. In addition to operating the flight, several automatic modes, camera and camera operation it also has a simple movie editor so you can immediately post videos to, for example, instagram - a cool thing that probably I will use from time to time.

When it comes to minor issues, according to my thoughts:

  • the QR code which we connect the drone could be on the drone itself, not on its box - for this reason I had to go back for the box in my room, which I thought would not be needed anymore. As I understand it is also on the drone, but under the battery so still you can't use it when connecting...
  • it is not clear to me when the controller needs to be connected with a cable to a phone, sometimes it works only together, sometimes I lose connection after connecting - as a fresh user I still have a problem figuring it out,
  • crash sensors are only in the front - when I was buying it I thought it would be able to move safely at least in the XY plane.

To sum up - as a fresh user who has no experience with such devices, I am very satisfied. Small cons do not spoil the fun, and it is being compensates with cool video shots. I just hope that soon I will be able to share with you more interesting material. Until then, I invite you to a very short demonstration from the bigger square in front of the National Forum of Music in Wrocław. In the shots helped me @gr0g, who has not yet been able to set up an account here (is already 19 days). Hear you soon!

Polski

Do usłyszenia niebawem!

Thank you for this review! I'm glad to hear about experience with drone from the users who just started. I'm planning to get a drone for a long time but I'm still finding some reasons why not to do it (mainly as I'm not that happy with the cost).

I'm not that happy with all those warnings :) the less, the better and with drones it looks like there are too many :)

And 10 minutes battery? Sound a little too short to me. I wonder how much material that you will be happy with can be captured in 10 minutes :) Good that you're planning to get two more batteries.

I like your short video and I'm looking forward to seeing more. I think there will be some great shots :)

Good review. I have never tried one before put I can imagie through your words. Only 10 minutes battery time? That's a bummer, though it would be at least 30 mins. The footage looks good though, the stabilization seems to work well.

Yea 10 min is not that much, I knew it won't be that much before I get one. Yet didn't know how much of a perceived time will it be. Now I know that I will need 2 more batteries just like that :) Footage you can see I've put on youtube is no post-stabilization at all - everything in camera. I think it's really nice, I could consider it to make some videos on a human-eye level because of that. Will see what challenges it will bring :)

Ooh @witkowskipawel I always love your photo works, and now you're into drone video too. How cool! I'm hoping to see more coolness from your blog. You're doing so great on steemit, man! 😁

Uhm Thank you @gibic :) I'm glad to hear that! Can't tell for sure will I do lot with the drone as I'm really mostly focused on photography, but in spare time maybe I could get some funny projects going with that video. Thank you again for good word, everything the best for you!

How much is that drone cost?
I guess too expensive?
But its amazing!
Nice photos as well!
I guess that drone is already out of the market?

Well it's somewhat around 500$ - for sure there are more expensive drones. This one is very light, and with gimbal stabilisation. Those two factors were quite important for me. Drone itself is already on market for 1 or 2 years - it's not something really new. There is also a lot of reviews of this drone on the web I just wanted to add my own subjective impression. If you would be interested just look for a "DJI Spark" :) And I do encourage to give it a try, because it's a lot of fun :)

Oh, thanks a lot for the information.
Its very interesting!
My nephews love drone but still have no extra money to buy a drone.
By the way, how much is the cheapest drone?

Hello @witkowskipawel, nice to find this publication, since the drones appeared on the market I thought that the world would change, the films and photographs would change, I am a photographer - videographer and in more than one opportunity I have felt the need to have a drone even to replace the equipment completely, we must estimate that this technology came to stay for very long.

Your choice seems right to me to acquire DJI Spark, looks very good and I find its performance interesting, although it is still a headache that the average autonomy of the drones are 10 minutes, but with time I know that new technologies in energy storage will easily overcome that time constraint.

that good video brother. excellent demonstration in a few seconds, very clean everything, I've fallen in love with its automatic control is undoubtedly very good, as for video if really not very good resolution for cameras that record at least 4k in other drones, is respectable and from a device or decent computer will be able to appreciate the work effectively.

interesting things.

you can charge the battery with USB cable or powerbank

you can transmit to instragram almost that live

Greetings and good luck when you buy the second, or you can buy a drone with more performance even if it costs a little more expensive.

Thank you for sharing this publication through the clouds.

I have never seen a drone in real life, but I love watching videos recorded with them, thanks to you I knew that the one you used is noisy, I imagine that the sound comes from its propellers. I have read on the internet that there are devices with such professional cameras that participate in film recordings. How hard is it to handle it?

howdy from Texas witkowskipawel! hey that looks like a pretty cool drone, how high do those things go anyway? The video looks really sharp and clear. Can you give an approximate cost for that model? I bet the batteries aren't cheap!

Well, these 28 seconds are a jewel. I love short things that have a lot of sublimity. It's the best art of these times.

Big shots with drone!

Your video transmits me a word (from the poetic sense) FUTURE.
