From Cafeteria to the Log Flotation Tunnel - Tampere, Finland

in #photography5 years ago

Tampere is a very narrow city because of it's location between two lakes. On the north we have Näsijärvi (Näsi lake) and on the south we have Pyhäjärvi. (Holy lake) When you go just a little bit west from the city centre, there is an esker, a ridge that separates the two lakes from each other. In any other place of the ridge, if you want to go from the southern lake to the northern lake or vice versa, you have to climb on top of the ridge. But not here. You can take a shortcut straight through an old log flotation tunnel.

At the end of the post you find a link that has a bit of the history of the tunnel in English and a page that has Swedish and of course Finnish text too.

On the northern side of Tampere, on the idyllic bank of Näsijärvi, just few kilometers from the city centre and the amusement park Särkänniemi, you can find a small cafeteria that is open at summer. The cafeteria of the log flotation tunnel.

You can get there pretty easily by car if you come from the city centre direction. The city of Tampere is renovating the shoreline of Näsijärvi between the cafeteria and Särkänniemi amusement park, so in the future there will be a pretty lake scenery all the way, for those who choose to cycle or walk to the cafeteria, but now it's a mixture of work sites, future parks and detours. But there is a way, if you just continue beside the lake shore.

The boat beside the cafeteria, Uppotukki (a snag), is a place for children to play. At least when naming this boat, the owner has realized the unquestionable facts. Not like if the owner would have named it Unsinkable II. So it's a good thing that this snag, Uppotukki is permanently out of the water.

A good place to launch your boat. Or dip your feet to the lake and realize how cold the water is.

The tunnel is 261 meters long and 2 meters high. Nowadays it is an easy access for pedestrians and cyclists to the other side of the ridge. This end of the tunnel on #steemitworldmap. !steemitworldmap 61.508649 lat 23.698042 long Log Flotation Tunnel Cafeteria d3scr

So much empty space for graffiti artists. But then again... it's pretty cold in the middle of the tunnel. Even in the summer, so I think graffiti ideas may freeze after ten or twenty meters. Let's go check it out.

Cafeteria open daily 11-19.
Gates open daily something... 10-18:45 perhaps

South end of the tunnel. And don't worry. If you visit the tunnel on such time that the gates are locked before you manage to go back, and you for some crazy reason drove to the cafeteria by car and after seven o'clock in the evening you are on the wrong side of the gates, you can always climb any of the numerous stairs that are on both sides of the ridge. And it's not that many steps... It's good for you! :) But what is a bit of a challenge is to cross the road that goes by the cafeteria. There aren't that many pedestrian bridges or crossings over the busy road.

Finally! The southern lake: Pyhäjärvi.

IMG_20190518_160840.jpg

This time when I walked from Näsijärvi to Pyhäjärvi, it was 20°C (and something) warm. Check out my older post when it was -20°C (and something) cold and I did the same thing in the city centre. Good pictures. I'm a little annoyed at @tarazkp though...Would have liked to see the log flotation tunnel...Who doesn't love a little log floatation huh? He will have to take me when I come back. We can go there right before we hit the cafe for coffee and munkki's!

Will have to take a look next year. Gonna bring some spray cans too...😆

Have to save some of the excitement for your next visit.

There might be different kind of graffiti in the tunnel a year from now. So that's really exiting. And there might be more cars going by the Flo Tunnel cafeteria. More road noises. That's exiting too. And there's always the thing that the other end of the tunnel may not go next year where it went now. That's a possibility and a really exiting thing too.

Ha! I have to sell this Flo Tunnel Cafeteria translation to the Uittotunnelin kahvila. It's so much more funkier than the longer translation.

So much to look forward to!! :D

Then again the flotation tunnel might be more exiting than we might want it to be. Don't tell galenkp.

True...I'm probably more excited about the munkki's to be honest. 😂

Oh but this is a part of a huger travel plan where you end up running around Tampere as a punish... reward for eating too much munkki. It has small but significant sights that you do not have time to stop and wonder. You have to learn to see everything as you are walking or cycling past it. Same thing if you want to take photos of the sights.

I was thinking of adding a couple of old ruins and abandoned places to this travel list too. I am pretty sure @tarazkp loves my ideas.

I'm sure he does. :)

Thanks. :)
Yeah! Bring your log flotation tunnel gear with you. And you can sell the idea that it's worth going to to tarazkp by saying that @smallsteps would love the puddles and the water fountains in the tunnel.

Or you can just say, forget your own ideas and let's just follow Insanes insane travel tips because you have always wanted to see a tunnel. No. Not A tunnel. This tunnel!

Nonni! 😂 @insaneworks insane travel tips! You're onto something there.

I'm already working on @tarazkp, subliminally, to convince him that he has to take me there so I'm sure it will happen. Who knows? We might run into one of your insane travel groups whilst were there. I can only live in hope.

I should have brought my spray cans and left you all a note. Some weird and encrypted message about the hidden treasure I've... hidden... here in Tampere. Like: walk like an Egyptian to the next marsh and Glory will find you.

Haha, I always walk like an Egyptian...Doesn't everyone?

So the treasure hunt would be a piece of cake for you.

hey @insaneworks, I love finland !! I have been there only once, in the summer, and I would love to come back. I saw the other article, winter style: I want to see the snow !!
thanks and congratulations for curie vote

Thanks! Curie always surprises when you least expect it. :)

If you plan a visit to Finland and want to see the snow, January and February is a good time to perhaps see some snow in the southern parts of Finland too. One never knows if it's a proper winter or not. You know, lots of snow and below 0°C. :) Then again you can always go anywhere north from Oulu where it's a bit colder almost all the time.

It's amazing. I did not know what could be such an unusual urban layout. Ability to shorten the path through the tunnel ... I would not refuse :)

A pretty useful tunnel nowadays. Even though it's not in it's original use anymore. :)
Thank you for your comment.

Looks like a perfect place to go for one day trip with family.. I can imagine that it can be misleading and one can think that water is warm if it's warm outside. We have many mountain lakes in Switzerland that are freezing cold even though it's around 30 degrees Celsius outside.

I like those birch trees. They make me think of Slovakia. We also have plenty of them back home..

That tunnel is a great idea. Luckily it's not so long and you can see the end as otherwise it would be quite scary :)

Thank you for sharing and congratulations on your curie vote!

Thank you for your comment.

On the south side there are lots of peaceful places to go for a picnic also if the cafeteria beside the road isn't something one is looking for.

I would imagine that in Switzerland the lakes might be cold also because of the melting snow from the mountains. I bet those lakes are crystal clear and really beautiful! :)

And thanks! Curie surprises sometimes. :)

You know Finland is the safest place in world and it is ranked lowest in list of polluted countries.

You might be knowing it, but looking at those pictures i just felt like calling the two facts out.

Thank you for your comment.

It's all because we have only about 5,5 million people here. Less than many big cities in the world have. As Finland is about 338 455 km² big, that means about 16 people / km². That's some personal space there. :D

Clean nature and clean air is one of our things we always mention to travelers thinking of coming here.

Oh yeah that's lots of personal space :D
