Travelog 12 | Japan Series: Visiting Tokyo's Oldest Temple♥
We planned on waking up early to visit the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo located at Asakusa named Senso-ji Temple. We like to get there as early as possible to see how the early sun touches the area. Unfortunately, we woke up kinda late :(
As we have researched, the temple is dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. Legend says a statue of the Kannon was found in the Sumida River in 628AD by fishermen. The chief of their village recognized the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by remodeling its own house into a small house into a small temple in Asakusa so that the villagers could worship Kannon.
We rode Ginza Subway line for Asakusa and walked a few blocks to get there. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a small picturesque gate, Kaminarimon.
The temple grounds were almost absent of people since we were early that time. We walked through the shopping street of over 200 meters called Nakamise. Each roller shutters are decorated with artistic murals.
After passing through the long stretch of Nakamise, you'll see the Hozomon Gate.
If you would like to take time to appreciate the architecture, try to visit the place early in the morning to avoid the crowd(we went there aroound 7am).
