Travelog 04 | Hong Kong Series: A Beacon of Art in an Urban Setting

A Paragon Not Exactly Hiding in Plain Sight

It became our habit to visit well renowned pieces of art by famous designers every time we travel. Their creativity always facinate us. Just the though of creating something on paper and eventually making the world their canvass, working their way to make a monumental art be fully realized, is very remarkable.

As we exhaust our legs exploring #HongKong one summer, besides visiting tourist spots and theme parks, we made sure to visit a few buildings made by famous architects, one of which is by the late "starchitect" Zaha Hadid. We just see her works of art on books during our university days and through the internet. But with the opportunity of seeing it in real life, why would one let it pass.

Located within the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus, the iconic Jockey Club Innovation Tower is the home of PolyU School of Design and the Jocky club Design Institute for Social Innovation which was completed by mid 2013. Its has a variety of design studios, classrooms, lecture hall, design museum, and exhibition spaces.

The spacial planning within the building was well thought off which encourages interdiciplinary contributions that can benifit every creative department. Unfortunately we were not able to enter the building the time we visited. Bummer. Its interior really looks amazing on photos!

The main facade feature is made of fluid looking aluminum fins that wrap around the whole structure complimenting the glass windows, which do not only act as an aesthetic but as a sun shade as well.

The base is made of concrete in contrast to the upper aesthetic of the building, with few entwined ramps and walkways along its perimeter.

As we say goodbye to this eternal beauty, we feel contented to have visited one of Zaha's living legacy.

So fulfilling.
