Hermit Group - Papua New Guinea#4 : Manta rays, but also Stingrays...!
| Hermit Group, in Papua New Guinea, has been a memorable meeting place with Manta rays. Nice. How can you tell the difference ? Is it mainly size ?
No, they are really different animals. Manta rays can reach 4-5m and live in blue sea. They have two "brasses" in front of their head to catch food which is essentially composed by planctons. Stingray can reach 1m50-2m max, and live mainly on the sand. They eat worms into the sand and sleep on the sand sometimes with sand on them. Their technic for swimming are different too. Manta ray swim as a "bird", with wings mouvement from up to down, and stringray swim with ondulations. You can't confuse them.
