For this post I start with one of the towers on the Jefferson Market library on 6th Ave, its such an intersting buildign I had to get a few shots and find out its history as I thought it looke dlike it was originally a church with features like this.

But on looking it up apparently, it was originally a courthouse and was build along with an adjacent prison between 1875 and 1877. and was designed by architects Frederick Clark Withers and Calvert Vaux (who also assisted in the design of Central Park) in a Victorian Gothic style.

in the 1880s it was voted one of the most beautiful buildings in America, however by 1959 it was only occupied by Pigeons and rats and was considered an eyesore and plans were put in place ot demolish it,.

Local residents petitioned to save it and got support to renovate it as a library that opened in 1967 and still remains that until today.

That's such an impressive tower!!! It has so many geometric shapes, the base is hexagonal, it's rounded in the middle and it's square on top. So beautiful!

OMG! I had no idea of the history of that library, but, so many amazing buildings have been torn down due to neglect.

Look at the architecture and scratch your head, right!?? I would LIVE there! What a masterpiece!

Thanks for sharing!

@dswigle Yeah I was so surprised when I read the history of it, but I am so glad it was saved

I don't think its a place I would want to live in maybe just because its in the city LOL

Wow I did not realize that was a library. Very cool and it's good they were able to restore it and not let it crumble!

I was the same way I was not expecting it to be a library but am so glad it was saved

What a beautiful building, I cannot believe they wanted to tear it down! As a library now, I love it. I love libraries and the ones with character make them even more delightful! Great pictures @tatoodjay!

@birdsinparadise Thanks I am glad they saved it as well I would never have guessed it was built as a courthouse
