Three levels of self-discipline, which level are you on?

After graduating from high school, John went to the army; We have not contacted with each other since he went to the army. Last night, he invited me to have dinner before he goes back to hometown to visit his relatives.

At the dinner, I laughed at him because he is as black as bamboo charcoal, he gave me a supercilious look, dropped the chopsticks on hand, stand up and pull up his shirt to show off his abs.

After dinner, I send John to the subway station, and asked him what’s the greatest rewards from the army, he said he gets a good body and many good habits, become more self-disciplined.

It’s self-discipline again, in these two years, everyone is talking about self-discipline, there is a countless post on self-discipline, we envy those who self-discipline, but inertia still defeats us.

All human suffering, in essence, is the anger of human’s incompetence. And self-discipline is precisely the fundamental way to solve the pain of life.

We know we should be disciplined, but we don't know how to discipline ourselves.

What is self-discipline? Some people say self-discipline is self-restraint, is to learn to insist, these are not wrong, but not comprehensive.

From the book “ Power of Self-discipline,” it mentions that self-discipline is a skill that consists of a series of habits that are no different from driving or playing.

Since it is a skill, it means that self-discipline is not innate, that it can be acquired through learning, just as our muscles can be trained, and that is why we have a basic condition for discussing how to discipline ourselves.

In the book, self-discipline is divided into three levels, namely, beginner self-discipline, intermediate self-discipline and advanced self-discipline.

The beginner self-discipline level focuses on how to deal with tasks efficiently and how to handle all kinds of time management tools.

The intermediate self-discipline level focuses on habit formation, focus on health, nourish the brain, maintain a peaceful emotional state, maintain high-quality interpersonal relationships, and develop high-level interests.

And the advanced level of self-discipline is knowing how to fully utilize their advantages to pursuit their life value.

It is obvious that most of us are still struggling in the beginner self-discipline level.

Although self-discipline is divided into three levels, if you observe closely, you will find that when you are only a beginner self-discipline, but this does not affect your progress to get closer to intermediate level of self-discipline and even advanced self-discipline.

When we consciously stand in the higher dimensions of thinking, planning the future, we will see the road clearer, and take fewer detours.

We often say that self-discipline is very difficult, it is because you do not know how good it is after self-discipline. Self-discipline has pushed Kobe's career to the top, and let everyone who likes Kobe see the power of self-discipline.

When cleaning, I happened to find a letter my parents wrote to me five years ago: I hope you live a full life, I hope you can find happiness from work.

Now, I guess, they hope that I can become an advanced self-discipline person.

How to be self-disciplined?

For the threshold of beginner self-discipline, the necessary time management skills are the basis, only to master these ways to improve efficiency, our life will create greater value.

From beginner self-discipline to intermediate self-discipline, the key is to establish a series of good habits.

There are seven steps to maintain good habits:

  1. Objective action
  2. Increase the likelihood of new habits
  3. Weaken the action of competition
  4. Eliminate reminders
  5. Reduce motivation and interest
  6. Increase difficulties
  7. Build supervision.

The first two steps focus on the cultivation of new habits; the next five steps will focus on repressing old habits.

Every change is a struggle against bad habits, and action to weaken competition refers to reducing the frequency of bad habits.

Recently, I have been plagued by mobile phone addiction, usually after half an hour of writing, I will get up to exercise for a while, but now because of the frog (mobile game from Japan), I will unknowingly play until midnight.

So, according to the seven steps of self-discipline, I decided to delete the game, reduce the presence in my eyes as much as possible, that is, our fourth step to eliminate the reminder.

At the same time, I analyze the main reason I am addicted to this game is to check on the frog, see whether it comes back home or not, but with an instant reverse thinking, even if it is back, then what? This is to reduce the motivation and the fun of playing games with transforms thinking.

As for increasing the problem difficulties and manufacturing supervision, it is easy to understand that I am writing this post and I am here to say this post will act as supervision.

Like eliminate reminders of old habits, we should, in turn, increase our awareness of new habits, boost motivation, and arouse our desire for goals.

If you want to form a habit of reading, you might as well put on a few books at the bedside, in the living room, on the balcony, even in the toilet, read it when you see it.

In short, to become a disciplined person, to develop a good habit, as the author of the book said: Pave the way for new habits, create trouble for the old bad habits.

There is no shortcut to changes; we can’t be lazy on growth, each step must be taken slow and steady to go further.

Self-discipline does not make our life become mechanical, will certainly won’t quench our enthusiasm for life, but because of self-discipline, our life has become more fulfilling and better.

The next time you want to develop a new habit, you might as well try these seven steps.

Interesting post, i think the self-discipline increase with age, i found myself more and more self-discipline the older i get, and i wonder if its good or bad.
Sometimes it would be good to let go off the self-discipline and let lose once in a while.
