The thinking pattern is our perception of how the world works, and the way we know things.

Why the thing we see in the picture is different?

I believe you must have seen the classic painting above, but the thing that everyone sees first in the painting must be different. We are in the same world, but everyone's world is so different. And why? Because our thinking pattern is different, the way we understand things around us is different, which leads to the behavior of treating things differently.

The one who plays with you, the classmate that you go to school together every day, and the colleagues in the office years ago, are they living a completely different life now?

How powerful is the thinking pattern?

The first effect of the thinking pattern is selective attention.

Let's look at a famous experiment first.

American psychologist Daniel Simons has done a "The Monkey Business Illusion" experiment, in a video of about 30 seconds, six peoples constantly moving around, transposition, and finally asked the participants to count how many times the players are wearing white pass the ball.

The answer is 15 times. But that's not the point; the point is: Are you noticing anything strange in this video?

A lot of participants were surprised when they watched the video again. The results showed that about 50% of the participants did not notice that there was a gorilla in the video, who walked in and beat his chest toward the camera and then walked out of the scene.

This is terrible! Why is that? Daniel called this phenomenon "selective attention".

I wonder if you've ever had this experience:

(1) Word/number that saw a few days ago, when seeing it in the news articles, you inexplicably surprised, this is a coincidence?

(2) inadvertently learn some knowledge about a new car, walking again on the road, suddenly found that there are a lot of the car is running on the road! Why have you never seen it before?

(3) Read an investment article in the morning, mention a VC company name, this is the first time you see it. Watch the news in the evening and see the name of the company in the news again. The thing that knew in the morning immediately saw it again in the evening!

In fact, these words, numbers, cars, and new objects, which we think are coincidental, they have always existed around us, except that our brains filter out things those that we cannot understand or don't care about, and choose to focus on what we know.

In the same world, facing the same thing, everyone choice is different. After years of change, the fate of these differences is unimaginable.

People always say that the fate of impermanence, it is because of the different thinking pattern, the understanding of things, experience and so on, decided each time the difference of choice.

The second effect of the thinking pattern is to use the existing experience to judge new things.

This simple example illustrates the fact that when facing new words and things, our brain immediately extracts our experience, complements, perfects and even makes judgments and assists us in understanding new things.

When any new thing comes up, there are two kinds of people. One will study with an empty cup of mind, think it as a new opportunity; the other will judge the new thing based on the experience, because never experience before, so it is not reliable to ignore it or simply reject it.

Countless historical experience shows that any powerful force, is often a double-edged sword, thinking pattern is no exception.

Now let's go back to the Bitcoin example mentioned at the start of the post. Some people will say, this is an excellent investment opportunity! Some people would say, this is a Ponzi scheme!

A few years have passed, in the constant controversy, some people study it with an open mind and quietly achieve financial freedom, some people with the conservative mentality refused to learn, still earn not too much than fixed wages.

We are not here to talk about the right or wrong of something, but to say that it is good to use the benefits of the thinking pattern and to be wary of the limitations of the thinking pattern.

"Selective attention" and "use of existing experience to judge new things", if used improperly, can bring us loss and regret. This also explains why opportunities are always around us, but we miss them all the time.

To treat each choice, the emergence of new things, the flow of every information, the emergence of each new industry, we should embrace with a humble attitude, open mind, to look at it objectively, learn and understand it.

Only in this way, it is possible to seize the opportunity that is already around you, so that the initiative with something related to the possibility of inadvertently change your fate.

In this new era of interconnection and innovation, only through continuous refinement can we continue to expand our minds. And the thinking pattern determines our life.
